I'm 19 and just picked up a pool stick for the first time midway through my Fall Semester at school (meaning I'm very new to the game). I understand this video and I'm able to make these shot but my only problem is scratching. Does anyone know how to prevent this? It would be of great help to me. Thanks!
If the CB is far from the rail, or if you use slow speed, it doesn't matter ... the CB will develop roll on its own; although, an above center hit is recommended.
If the CB is close to the rail, or if fast speed is used, you must hit above center to ensure the ball rolls into the cushion.
ok i got it,its normal shot right,now what about banking using right or left english. the rebound path after the cue ball contacts the rail will be wider than normal right?now how to calculate the rebound path with this diamond formula sir?please reply :)
This particular system is only for a rolling ball with no sidespin.
There are many different systems for different situations, and there are many effects that need to be accounted for in other situations (e.g., using english). If you want to learn more, see the "bank and kick shot" FAQ page on my website (especially the "effects and factors to consider" section). I have lots of resources and video demonstrations dealing with these topics, all accessible from that page.
What part is confusing? It's very easy to aim "through" the diamonds, and the 2-to-1 tracks are easy to visualize. Try it out when you get to a table ... it works really well.
@DrDaveBilliards I know how to aim through the diamond. I know how to shoot a pool ball. I know how to shoot a straight ball to side pocket, but I just can't bank. I'm confused with the 1, 2, 3, 3.5etc... Lol. Perhaps I'm not viewing this video as best as I should. I have a pool table in my garage, but it's not set up because it doesn't fit.. Local pool areas where I live is quite expensive that's why I only play 1 time a week which is not enough for me to practice.
FYI, my June, 2010 Billiards Digest article covers this method fairly well. You might find it helpful. You can find it on my billiards dot colostate website.
Also, disc IV of my "Video Encyclopedia of Pool Shots" also covers this in great detail.
Wouldn't it be nice if cloth manufacturers put a really nice set of hatch marks along the cloth--like a measuring tape, with marks of different sizes for dot, half-dot, quarter-dot, eighth-dot, for example (or into tenths). Or, the marks could be drawn in on already installed cloth.
@GetMeThere1 : Oops. I wasn't really clear. I mean that the marks would be on the point of the rails--or perhaps in the no-man's-land underneath the rails.
Thank you so much! I am a rookie in billiards and I kept wondering what those darn diamonds do, thank you very much ill practice more of my bank shots.
I'm glad you know what the diamonds are for now. :)

Preventing a scratch is easy ... just use slower speed and/or target one side of the object ball (instead of the center).
Good luck with your game, and please help spread the word about my stuff.

Indeed, wouldn't it be interesting is the entire playing surface was marked of graphically into small squares.

@GetMeThere1
Personally, I like the aesthetic beauty of current pool table design (plain cloth, diamonds on rails).
