  • Wow... I wish my projects were that fun.

  • its simple to understand and good place to start with FreeMind

  • Thanks for the great tutorial!

  • Thanks very much. That tutorial was well designed and shows an academic approach behind the scene.

  • Freeplane is a new open-source mind mapping software program that is an offshoot of the popular Freemind program

  • Verri nice tutorial

  • Hi Mike,

Thanks for the help. You're a good teacher!

  • Thank you very much for this tutorial. I am going to use it like a mad man to prepare my lessons !!

  • i watched the behind the scenes episode of arby n the chief and that's how i know about free mind.

  • @Ultrasound700 me too

  • @Ultrasound700 Arby n the chief is fucking awesome

  • I like freemind.. but I will sound like a total newb.. when I press TAB nothing appears > < I even selected the bubble =o

  • @DescendingDeath press Enter and/or insert

  • @DescendingDeath Looks like the tab doesn't work in windows. We gotta use insert!

  • Great video introduction to the software, thx alot!

  • Three things: I live in Clemson, thanks for the tutorial, Freemind is sweet, and Clemson took a beating last night to USC

  • Great tutorial, also rather humorous in your own right. :P Too bad for Team #4, all they wanted to do was establish World Peace...

  • Mind map + PDF = genius documentation.

  • Nice vid - I am using Windows and need to use "insert" button instead of TAB - took awhile to figure out!

  • @mikemon75 thanks you saved my ass LOL i was about to panick xD

  • Excellent tutorial! Very complete for an introduction.

  • Thank you! Nicely done.

  • Thanks for the tutorial. I'm using it to set up a meeting plan and I'll probably use it in the meeting for summary transcriptions... You mention at 9:20 an "accompanying applet" to edit the mindmap when it's exported as a webpage: Do you know what that applet is? Or, alternatively, is there a collaborative editing extension for FreeMind (or other mind mapping softwares) that you know of? (sortof like the Subetha engine or shared Google Docs use for collaboratively editing text documents?)

  • @tillmanhall

From the Netherlands, thanks alot i used it for class the next day :)

  • I'm using this app on a macbook, but I can't seem to delete one of the bubbles ;-( did you press command delete or.. just delete? either way it doesn't work for me

  • Hi,

how do i embed it in the webpages? so as to make it interactive...

  • thanks :)

  • just on point. Thanks a lot from helsinki

  • I have a couple of frustrating complications

When I make a new bubble they all appear on the same side whereas yours didnt

Then when I move the bubble hoping to bring it to the opposite side they all move and end up in places where I dont want them. Any suggestions?

  • @jonceballos - Yay, I just leaned how to do this! To stop them all going to one side, drag the node you want to move to the other side and place it at the BOTTOM of the other side's nodes, then keep pressing and drag it up to the position you want.

Make sure the TOP of each node you are skipping over is HIGHLIGHTED (not the left or right) and the moved node will be put where you want it.

  • @jonceballos - forgot to say you were dragging the node's handle to move them if it made all the others move. To rearrange the order or change sides, you drag the node itself; not its handle.

  • Great tool and helpful tutorial. How to support it ? Cheers

  • Thanks! Was great help!

  • hey-great tutorial! you have a nice way of explaining. I wanna use a mind map for my BA thesis, I'm using it already, but I never find out how I can create more than 4 branches going from the basic bubble in the middle...is there a way? Iwanna have 8! thanx a lot for the nice tutorial, if you've got time to tell me how to make more than 4 main branches diverging from the basic bubble it would be so nice! Greetings from Hamburg, Germany. Katharina.

  • @KatkaSch Thanks for your feedback! I think you can just press "TAB" to add as many bubbles as you need. Does this help you?

  • where's my A??

  • excuse this out of context question, but what software did you use to make this tutorial? any bloke?

  • @babylonliar The program is iShowU by shiny white box! What do you mean!? Your question IS the context. :)

  • @tillmanhall superb m8! txs!

  • @babylonliar iShowU is for Macs. If you have a PC use Jing (free), JingPro $12 or Camtasia Studio $299

  • @babylonliar The app is called FreeMind, like it says in the header.

  • Thanks mike for the tutorial. I was wondering if you can import file locations to it though for quick access?

  • @SurrendertheCog Hmmm. I'm not sure what you mean...

  • Great tutorial Mike, I' just downloaded FreeMind 10 minutes ago and practically had no idea how to use it. This tutorial is a no brainer, got me building mmaps in minutes. Good job!

  • Hi Mike,

Many thanks for the clear tutorial of FreeMind.

I just get the apps today, and can't wait to use it to organize my life better.

  • @KISMAWANTHEN GO FOR IT!

  • Thank you man.. it helps me a lot..

  • Great tutorial Mike! You should make more tutorials like this

  • @MartinYThienNguyen If you say so!

  • Team #3 can secede! haha!

  • Great job, thank you, Mike.

  • good job for making clear instruction tutorial

  • team number 4 :(

  • I feel sorry for poor #4 :(

  • thank U, is a very clear tutorial for my initiation on this

  • Great video! Can you help me figure out the process for embedding freemind in my website in the way you did on the tutorial? brian10699 at gmail

  • @brian106699 You know... it's been a year and a half or more since I messed around with this functionality. I think the newest version of Freemind is pretty posh and can export an .html file, though! Lemme know...

  • Great Job! Very clear! Very concise! Thanks!

  • @murphy903 You're welcome.

  • Thanks a lot Mike. good tutorial, simply and clear. Attention, for winwdows is not the key TAB but the key INS to add new item. Bye.

  • @SteG73 Good call.

  • excellent tutorial, thank you so much!

  • @auscan77 You're welcome so much.

  • Theres a team #2 in every project xD

  • @dar2boy Oy. Yeppers.

  • Thank you for sharing!

  • 3:40 fewd.

  • Really useful tutorial - thanks so much for taking the time to make it!

  • Thank you for the great tutorial.

  • Can you help me, how can I insert a location on my computer in a node, not a file or image, just a location like C:\.....\... – without typing it all.

    Thanks

  • @contrapunctus77 OH! I'd just go into "explorer" view and copy the location from the address bar, and paste it into a node. Maybe copy into notepad before pasting into the node so as to strip out any formatting? 'Course, you'd need to make sure notepad is set up for plain text...

  • Thanks! That was helpful :)

  • Great video! I am going to pass along the link to my students. Out of curiosity, what application did you use to create it?

  • Hm, don't really know if you're still "active" on this video, but just wanted to ask you if you know if it's possible to highlight SINGLE words (be it bold, italic or coloured) without having to affect the WHOLE sentence?

It's a shame if it doesn't have a feature such as that - and a bit odd.

  • @JeeYaoKuneDo I do not think you can. This is a great frustration, I agree.

  • thanks for your help. so glad that i found this program

  • Thanks for the video, I was completely lost in front of this program until I saw this video.

"Where are the damn buttons? Oh lets search on youtube"

  • @MindControl7000 bwa, ha, ha. Just wait for my next video on "ImprisonedMind." It will be most unhelpful.

  • Thanks so much for dong this... I downloaded the software without any idea on how to use it!!

  • @MommyReporter That's the way! Just jump right in!

  • Hi,

You might like to know that there's a new improved and fully compatible version of Freemind - FREEPLANE. I've tried it and it's even better than Freemind (produced by some of the same team who broke away). And yes - it's FREE! Download here: freeplane . sourceforge . net (remove spaces)

  • Great tutorial and love your sense of humour... can you come over to my house and just do it for me! My technical skills are very basic.

I'm surprised that Free Mind don't show tutorials on their site... or did I miss something?

    Thanks

  • @sandhaninc No, you didn't miss anything. They missed something.

  • @tillmanhall LOL... thanks for replying... couldn't even remember what I said ...Got it now LOL

  • Sir,

I would like to use this program not only as a mindmap, but also a calendar program, combining both features, I already learned to put a date at a node, but I the reminder of the date of the event (node) does not appear at my screen, as other calendar´´s softwares, do you know how to solve this?

  • Excellent tutorial. I enjoyed watching it and it helped a lot. I just discovered mind mapping today through an application for my android phone called Thinking Space which I believe is compatible with FreeMind. I did my first map to chart out my plans for building my business and I think it is so cool to have software that can give you a visual of what you are thinking. I will have to give FreeMind a try and see how I like it on my laptop.

  • I have downloaded it, I have windows 7, But when I select it and press tab, nothing happens! Please help me Mike!

  • @rosatallack When you say you press "tab" is this to add a new node? If so, on a PC you need to use the "insert" key.

  • @rosatallack Crikey! It's been a year! Figured it out? I just logged back in after along time away.

  • This is a CRACKING piece of software - it's almost as good as iMindMap - the official Tony Buzan software - but the best thing is IT'S FREE!

I hate lists, etc., but with mind mapping I find I get a lot more done and I use Freemind almost every day.

  • Mike, thank you so much for your explanation. A friend of mine told me about this program, and I've just downloaded it. I have a question. With this application, do we not have to pay for a domain or host site?

  • @friteliberte2007 If you wanna put it online, you might have to have a webspace. But there are lots of places to do that for free.

  • Myspacedotcom/producedbyfreemind

  • Thanks for sharing. I have the program, but didn't know how to use it. Now I can see so many possibilities!

  • Thank you very much for this tutuorial - I used it for a homework and your help was invaluable!

  • thanks for taking time to putting this up...

  • Very good Toturial but tab doesnt work by me !!! ^^

  • @Maxschw1995 I had the same problem, so I right click and select Insert New Child Node. :-)

  • As a liberal arts undergraduate, I am quite interested in this specific group project. Mark me down to bring a thesaurus, hummus and fresh pita chips. I will take the place of student four. Also, I will bring SCRABBLE.

    Excellent tutorial-- many thanks.

  • @ElizabethMayLeshikar Noted. But, for your information, I only play Scrabble with protiles. Mine are navy blue. Boom. ;)

  • Thanks Mike. I had no idea how to use this prior to watching your tutorial. I now have everything I need to use it to enhance my online products. Thanks for all your help and guidance.

  • Thanks for a really useful and clear tutorial on FrreeMind. It really helped me "make my mind up" as to which software to go with and how to make a start with it. It's been a big help to me!

  • Great explanation of what this software can do. Thank you

  • Great tutorial, very clear and informative. I'm curious to know what kind of final group project would require blank DVDs, a crossbow and world peace. ;)

  • @ejsilver7 sound like a day of parties, games, pirating movies and racially motivated violence

  • @ejsilver7 Definately something from a liberal arts course... :)

  • @ejsilver7 A postmodern group project. A postmodern group project that ends, typically, in confusion and anti-learning. Freemind is a dangerous weapon in the hands of a postmodernist. I am, proudly, a pre-modernist (or a post-post-modernist).

  • Thank you very much...

  • This is an incredible piece of software and I'm looking forward to using it for further projects and note taking in university.

Very well-done tutorial as well :)

  • From Germany

Thanks so much! This really helped.

  • @christian2busch You're welcome.

  • Thanks so much! This really helped.

(btw, has anyone told you, you sound exactly like Michael McDonald? :O)

    <33

  • This is a brilliant tutorial. Not too flashy but really explains the software well. Thanks.

  • thank you very much, i was struggling with freemind for an hour :D

watched this video and my issue is resolved now :D

    thank youuuuuuu

  • thank you i need help with it

  • great pres!

Dont think this is for me, but i guess ill download it. I might need it for a couple of slides in a PP pres.

    cheers

  • Hi Mike. I'm trying to create a graphic representation of a site-map in FreeMind.

I believe it's possible to use FM to create a site-map when planning a website, but is it possible to load a site-map from an existig website into FreeMind?

  • @geoffkb I'm not sure how to import this data...but I just used FM to re-structure the hierarchy of an online educational webspace... it works well. Especially in a conference room, projected on a screen, with many people chiming in. Some people are just visual, ya know?

  • Thanks so much! I keep coming back to rewatch this tutorial and get new skills to use on my freemind map! I'm using this to plot a book.

  • Thanks

  • Hey thanks for the informative video.

Question: How do you make each bubble into 2 lines instead of having 1 long sentence? (i know mindmaps are meant to be short and not word-y but my exam needs me to know all these information!)

  • oops.. figured it out.. "right click and "edit long node""

  • hey mike can i use your tutorial

  • Thanks for the comment! How do you want to use this? What do you mean exactly? :)

  • i mean i wanted upload your video on my channel but its ok i don't need to because what it was i didn't know how to make tutorial videos liek you did but its ok i do now thanks for getting back to me mike

  • simply the best

  • No problem. Anytime.

  • 02:52 Do you mean "press Tab(ulator key)"? In case that's not working for me. :-( May be I missunderstand you: my english is not very good.

  • I'm on Ubuntu Linux and when I press TAB as you suggest I do not get branches. TAB just cycles through the icons at the top.

  • Hmmm...good question. I'm also running Ubuntu on another machine, but haven't installed Freemind on that one yet. Let me take a look and see what I can figure out.

  • Working on this...I'll let you know what I come up with.

  • Found it.. its INSERT just like the windows machine *le gasp*

    Thanks a bunch.

  • Lovely! Clear. Helpful. Thanks.

  • Thanks!

  • Thanks for this. Very helpful. Cheers.

  • You're welcome!

  • Thank you very much for your clear explanation of Freemind. Are you planning to post more tutorials?

  • Absolutely, I am.

  • thank you very much

  • No problem!

  • god what's ya problem why don't u do some things faster

  • Good question!

  • You da' man... Thanks.

  • No, YOU da' man. :D

  • Excellent. Thank you.

  • You're welcome, sir.

  • I just downloaded Freemind last night. Thx so much for the nice, simple tutorial! :)

  • Hope it helped!

  • I think team member 2 caused team member 4's "industrial accident."

  • HAhahaha! Yes, I think so as well.

  • Thanks!!! it was really usefull for me, pretty clear... good job..

  • Glad it was useful.

  • I'm trying to follow along but when I select the primary bubble, I hit tab and it didn't create a branch. This might be a settings problem. Could someone please indicate another method of creating the four branches other than using tab?

  • Oops, reformed man! I think I accidentally deleted your own followup answer to your original question! Thanks for helping us out on this!

  • wow, that was just brilliant mate. thanks a lot. cool stuff. you sure know how to teach.

  • Hey! Thanks!

  • Great, thanks very much, very useful, clear, detailed tutorial, much appreciated.

  • Anytime.

  • Great job, thanks a lot. Keep on sharing knowledge, doing so you actually make a difference.

  • This is one of the nicest comments yet. I'll keep on sharin'!

  • THANKS for the info! Seems very handy creative thinking projects.

  • It really is...I'm even using it to outline a production strategy for my next electronic album! It could be great for storyboarding a film or play, too.

  • Nice, if you have a BlackBerry, then try Mindberry mindmapping on the move.

  • I'll consider this.

  • good tutorial.. cherz

  • Back at yah.

  • thanks! clear and to the point in 10'--excellent

  • And in one take...Ha! :)

  • thank you very good

  • I luvs music too, Maya!

  • This is a great introductory video, thanks! For anyone using the latest version in Windows, it seems you have to press "insert" instead of "tab" like he says in the video (to insert a child node)

  • Ditto that. Thanks for the help!

  • thanks i needed this for my videos

  • Your videos? How's that?

  • How do I make the html file display as the clickable map, instead of the tree structure? (Selecting export as xhtml clickable map version did not do it how i want - as when an mm doc.)
