Ok so for any stupid jackass who works in a shop who's mommy or daddy paid for the apprenticeship not every 1 has 3 to 5 thousand dollars for an apprenticeship more than half of the artists in tattoo shops have either been tattooed or used a home made machine they get it stuck in there head that they are better just because they can tattoo out of a shop or they got there liscence woopty doo doesn't make you better than a scratcher just because a scratcher don't have the training you have or don
Man Keep doing what your doing. We are constantly moving forward in this industry and some people forget we all start some where. I personally have found the industry very clicky and about who you know not what you know. Two of my favorite tattoo artists never served an apprenticeship and are award winning artist
@fhashfajhfa personally find this the best way if your gonna use one,but if you look at my arm bar screw there is no way i can put on on the regular beginner way....lol....low profile screws...but better not to use them as if you do the machienwill only run right when it there if that how you tuned it,and basically they only lower the sound and make a little extra give in the springs, but thats NOT wanted on some types
I am about to start tattooing for the first time ^_^ and I gotta say This video is very simple but it is super easy to understand for a beginner like myself. I am going to practice on synthetic skin then on myself to make sure I am ready to practice on people
just traded an ibanez for a whole box of tatto stuff crazy amount of needles and 4 guns 3 grips i have no idea what i have or where i came from looks like cheap shit but i dunno these vids helped me alot!!! can you please go into depth on it.. set up quick rundown and how to plug into the machine and all??
This didn't tell me how to set up a tattoo machine. When I turn the voltage up, the machine just snaps down. When I turn the voltage down, it snaps up. It doesn't vibrate like they show in these videos.
thanks foo, and to all you F__ks!! Kiss my ass!! I would love to be someones apperntice, but you F__ks act like ya'll are the only ones who can draw. I have going to the same artist for years now and I just started "Scratching" and already laid down some ink on a good friend. Afterwards I took my friend to my tattoo artist and he gets his panties all bunched up?? I did it all the way he would have done me!!! 99% Professional, of course its was in MY HOUSE! not my moms basement. So thnks ALL!!!
If all tattoo artists gave apprenticeships without acting like rock star assholes, we wouldn't have to watch these videos on youtube to figure out what the hell we're supposed to be doing. Tattoos are permanent! We wanna learn to do it right, and this seems the only way! If you would suck it up and let people into your shops who have passion for the art, then more power to you. There are smart people out there who will pick it up & give u a run for your MONEY! That's why you're worried!

DIY's should not be shunned so easily. At one point down the lineage of tattoo masters, someone had to learn themselves. Techniques are invented based around the the man AND the type of machine. KNOW your equipment. A more expensive brush doesnt make the painting any better. Same for machines... each person must get to know the limits of their equipment... sacrifice your own skin to see what it can do, and start SMALL on others, so that if you mess up, a prof can always fix it.
I like very much how you explain everything. I dont understand why some people are against giving infos to beginners. Its need alway two people. One you fucks up and one who wants to get fucked up.lol
No onestly. Its better to give some information away and show how it really must be done. Iam so sick and tired of those arrogant tattoo artists who think there all that.
some just dont have the money to afford an school to learn. the more you know, the better it gets. Oh well.
@lingua777 people that work in shops or own shops for that matter dont think anyone should tattoo other than them because he who controls the ink controls how fast he drives his new corvette,... if you do a tattoo on yourself or a friend, he just might not be able to afford his cushy little life,... dont let any of them fool you,... its all about the great american dollar,.....
@fatttasticvoyage And he likes to say I'm not in a shop so he feels better about being a true idiot. I mean WHERE is his tattoo work at ? He needs to put up or shut up. He talks allot of shit to people when he is worse then them. What a waste of sperm that guy is. Ask josh Carlton, Angelo Grisafi, Paul booth, Even Eikon, or ANY good artist if they use a gage, they will say A WHAT haha ? NO builders don't either. There is no one way like he thinks, but his is WRONG haha
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I got ur reply, I know how to do it all. I was trying to keep from posting the correct way on here. If you are a true artist, I am giving u credit here. Pleas understand we need not give scratchers info that they should be learning. You know what I mean,? They watch these videos and then they Fuck people up, try to keep our secrets to ourselves. If they want to know then they can put the shop bitch time in and learn like we did, thats how I did. Got me bro? Like I said no offense just someadvice
@iamjustinmason so I like to help people...i was not apprenticed,i got into a shop because my work was good...I am self taught, this is my method of how i tune.i didnt read it in any book or have a friend help its all mine..i used basic physics and electronis to help me out...and knowing what every parts function does is a good thing too...id love to see someone with a tattoo thats awesome and he say yea this guy on youtube helped me out so much...and really most artist have sold their souls
@iamjustinmason : it's all good saying 'LET SCRATCHERS GET AN APPRENTISHIP' here in the uk nobody wants to give us apprentiships. seriously i would give my life for an apprentiship! i would enjoy makin brews allday long if someone would be willing to teach me. According to people like you all us scratchers who love the art should not have the right to learn other ways. My god feller. get all tattooist to give apprentiships and there would be no need for us to learn other ways.
@cackpants Ive noticed that the best tattooists - the ones whos work stand out from the rest, are generaly not up their own arse and dont mind giving you tips and encouragment. Its the ones who are average/shit who feel threatened. Its all about competition. I know a guy who is self taught, hasnt got any tats himself and has been voted top100 in europe a few times.
@iamjustinmason "We need not give scratchers info that they should be learning" ??? What an idiot. Somehow some Tattooist or even enlightened scratchers are so full of pride an suck on their own wieners. Your advice to fattasticvoyage should be, "I'm a douche and will keep my bitch mouth shut because I'm an idiot who's going to go put in more bitch time in to sucking less at life.
@iamjustinmason WELL SORRY TO HEAR THAT YOU HAD TO BE A BITCH DO DO SOMETHING YOU ENJOY ! ILL SOON BE POSTING MY VIDS ON UTUBE AND ILL TELL IT ALL JUST SO PEOPLE AINT GOTTA BE NO BITCH , GOT IT, 32 YEARS OF SLINGIN INK FOR ME , AND ILL BLOW MOST ANY FUCKIN ARTIST RIGHT THE FUCK OUT OF HIS CHAIR ,....... AND HIS SHOP , HELL I JUST WATCED A COUPLE PEOPLE ON HERE THAT CLAIM THEY ARE PROFESSIONAL AND THEY OUGT TO BE SHOT FOR WHAT THEY DO, ANYBODY WANT TO KNOW ANYTHING BOUT SLINGIN I'M STIK"EM JIM
@STIKEMJIM upload em buddy,i think artist shuld unite,no matter their place of business, but duely note you wot get much but a few people saying thanks and a lot of people bitching about it dont work for them. Then you will get the guys that think they know it all cuz there in a shop, but its a too each his own kinda thing, nothing is perfect for everyone.I have worked in a shop, had many artist use my machines, and some cant even lay a line with them, while others wanna buy them.
Oh yeah by the way what size cap you got on that 10 wrap 5 dollar coil setup? a 10 or 22 or 47 what? Just curious cause your armature bar is on crooked and not shimmed correctly. Please apprentice somewhere. Thanks no insults intended just want people to be clean and safe and not teaching scratchers evenmore bad habits.
@iamjustinmason just curious...this is a side veiw..so even if the arm bar was crooked...there is no way to tell...plus why the hell would u shim and arm bar....you shim the coils....you need to leave about a business card gap when circut is closed on the rear coil....So idont understand waht ay of this is...and apparently you didnt watch the video as well as there isno 5 dollar bill coil in it...sorry
Sorry brother, but everything you have said is about 30 percent correct. Liners should be 1st of all not shimmed with a round washer it must be flat( for rear spring) and should be same front and rear example 16 rear, 16 front whatever.. You never look at it by the side. YOU always look at the front and you should see a figure 8 on the armature bar. You should never run your machines at different speeds, just adjust the shader and liner to run on same duty and volts. Capasitors are the key!
@iamjustinmason i shim my coils with coil shims...dont know what that means....and the springs dont have to be the same..you can preach the fact that the tension is messed up,and ur half right...but its how you set it up....you can look at it both ways...one is for duty and the one ur talkin is speed....and machines run at different speeds...i mena i like a faster liner...maybe others do too....and voltageis nto important..i would expect a 12 wrap to take more than an 8 by all means..
This is @ tattootraining. Yes i picked the name tattooingmyself cause i do tattoo myself. You know why , cause i am a professional tattoo artist unlike you. I tattoo myself in my SHOP unlike you who got fired 15 years ago and now you tattoo yourself in your MOMMYS basement. I would say get a apprenticeship looser but you already tried that and FAILED ! Don't let this guy and his gage fool you all. NO pro uses one.
@Tattooingmyself finally....finally....i was saying that the whole time too man...i have been in many shops and been to conventions adn watched rebuilding in person adn never once see one of those fuckin guges...they are rediculous...thanks for letting someone know though..maybe u saying it will be more than me
@fattasticvoyage No problem, i see he likes to think he knows it all. NOT ONE builder me or my fellow artists in my shop buy from uses a gage. NOT ONE artist tunes there machine with one. Your way is allot closer then that guys. He also told me he was a apprentice 15 yrs ago hahahah so why is he on you tube and not in a shop ? Cause he probably brought his gage with him haha. He just told me i am no tattoo artist and called me a haedshop ? What the fuck that means only god knows.
instead of people hating, they should be grateful that anyone is even willing to share any info. just take it and if it don't work for ya, then discard it. if it does then use it. people wanna moan when others don't want to share info, but when they do they want to hate on it!
@swiney007 no HATING INVOLVED, just want to save skin man thats it, if ur into art then apprentice its simple as that. Theres a reasons we build our ownd 3 thousand dollar machines, its cause weve pu the time in. Theres also a reason you cant buy what we can its called licenses, knowledge, shop, and cred. Thanks
@iamjustinmason thanks for your reply to my comment, but whos skin are you wanting to save? i fully appreciate what you are saying, but if people are wanting to go to " scratchers" that don't have $3000 machines, then im afraid it is entirely up to them.its not like they are children. yes there will always be the argument about apprentiships but not ALL tattoo artists did apprentiships. its the same as most things, people are gonna do what they want. neither you nor myself will change that.thnx
lol....wheres some of your work at bro? You somewhat act like you know what your saying...but then again....if you were really any good at tattooing you'd be in a shop... am i right? Learn how to cut your own springs and shit before you try and teach tutorials...hope eikon never goes out of bussiness...you'd be screwed
@pkrwood12 well apprently you havent figured out how to use youtube yet....and i have work up here from when i first started....nothing new though....and i do work in a shop and do cut my own springs from lumber ties.....and setting up a machine has nothing to do with cutting springs just so you know...mayb you shuld pay attention as well..where is ur videos?
Great Video, I'm actually in the process of self teaching, because even though I have about 10 friends that tattoo, none of them fuckers want to teach me..thanks for the vid..
Check out my videos and youtube channel - google search for basic fundamentals of modern tattoo - you can see a preview inside on amazon and you can see the chapter about machine tuning and the "a-bar" ghost
I have some good tattooing dvds and can hook up people that are true , pm me , and check out tattootraining he has videos to help you !!!!!!!! Only one on here that knows something ,
DO NOT BUY FROM MONSTERSTEEL , PIRCINGPROS, they are not proffesional at all, they sent me a broken power supply , took a week n a half , then i had to return and wait a week in a half again - and it was wrong fucking power supply , they are not pros , the don't care about u at all , a month i been waiting for this shit to be non broke and the right one, trust me or wait amonth 4 your shit to be broke r wrong
@xxsurcentralxx , the thing is , everything these people asked him , i answered , why would i ask what i know ? This dude is mental and basic , i can care less what he says , he said next gen don't know how to tune a machine , wrong springs , he thinks everyone sets em how he does , he is wrong , learn from him i don't care ! But i had to explain how mental he is and makes no sense saying i am everyone .
DO NOT ORDER FROM TIMEMACHINE THEY DO NOT WRITE BACK TO YOU !!!!!!!!TRUST ME IF U HAVE ANY PROBLEM WITH THEM AND YOUR ORDER THEY WILL NOT WRITE U BACK , 2 WEEKS I HAVE BEEN WAITING , THERE VIDEO SUCKS TO , SAME SHIT ON U TUBE !!!!!!!! CHINA IS MORE PROFESIONAL THEN THEM !!!!!!!!
Id ont understand why my comment area has been deeamed the place to talk shit about tattootraining.....yes he is a dick, but thats besides the point.I have never said this is the way, this is just waht I do,or what works for me...nofuckin gauages to measure shit, and just time and patience of the art...maybe one day i will be able to say I KNOW,rather than this is what worked for me....lol....but are we much better than his ass for talking shit about him,let him do what he does......
Sombody send me a copy of reinventing the tattoo 2,,,, please, I can't do that rar file , then extract, if any one is good with free files , hotfiles, please download that book and email me, even just the video part of Him building lines is all I really want , $
awesome man thx for all the tips and gettin back to me, when u skulpt your lines do u use the 3 pass method, once over, then little circles how fat u want em, then skimming the edges? my tats look real good fresh but still the edges of my lines aint really smooth. looks good till it heals then i see how blown some lines r. i mainly use a 5 round how bout u?
thanks for the reply i build mine up too with round shaders, but still gotta go over it too many times takes forever and then some spots r darker than other afterwards, ill try them things u said, weird thing is alot of beginners have this problem im talkin bout did you? u really think its 1 off these things??? i got 350-375grams of tension on the spring so has 2 b one of the things u mentioned huh:) Thanks
@skinz1234 I have never had a problem with the lines...they always stuck, the onnly problem I had was with the ink, some of the inke I used faded bad after healing. Now I use a different ink and its great.I use my round shaders on single pass lines as well. The only problem i ever really had was with ink,and with power supply.I got better stuff now,and learned to clean my contacts all the time,by sanding it down a hair.
@fattasticvoyage what ink do u use cuz a cuple of tats ive done the lines were spotty and i no the machine was tuned right and they were realy nice clean lines 4 about two weeks then the started fading or spotting
@fattasticvoyage Coil wraps and caps are the main components, if thats not right the springs dont mean shit. Learn some things before you try to teach them. Maybe I should post a video on how to do brain surgery. Oh wait I dont know how to do that... hint. Learn more about machines before you really damage some peoples lives. Or keep on scratching and make more work for artist like us. By the way they are pigments not INKS. I hate Youtube! Im really not trashing you bro, just please apprentice.
@iamjustinmason u need to learn more before commenting..you can use any capacitor...or better yet u dont even have too use on at all..they are only physical dumps for a certain amount of power(although i dont reccomend it)....only things coils offer is more power per wrap, but in consumes more voltage...I use 8 wraps...and have no problems...springs and the tension involved on the other hand do make the difference...bend u a spring as hard as u can and try to run it...then tell me its coils n cap
@fattasticvoyage uh wrong, once again trying not to be rude, but.... caps are vital example liner should have a 10uf,16uf, or 22 uf. Shaders/packers vary 47uf,67,uf or 100 max. That changes the whole attitude of the duty and cycle. example 8 wrap coil for a liner, 10 uf cap, the 22 front and rear spring tall frame, vertical contact on f/spring. running on 9 duty at 45 perfect setup. if u see any spark from front contact screw cap is on backwards or is bad. Sorry but 20 yrs exp bro. Thanks
@iamjustinmason A capacitor holds a certain amount of enrgy to dump out, instaed of it all pushing through...yes they can help, but are not vital...again u have a voltage or ur machine, but anything can play to differ it....if ur coils wraps are cotton wrapped an not plain with a covering...voltage will be alot lower...material ur frame is made of...hell ur footpedal if its not a good metal...there are lots ofthins to consider hince why voltage doesnt matter
i try to stretch pretty good but kinda hard when doin yourself. just seems like i dont know, whenever i got a tattoo from someone else seemed they went over it once and it stuck, me i gotta keep reworkin it :/
@skinz1234 ...just depends really man,if your trying for a single pass line, that what you need to go for....maybe more needle, more speed, less speed, more pressure.....it can be many things.....i usually build up my lines, and dont use liner needles
hey just a question,.i adjusted everything right even used correct springs but when lining or shading seems i have to go over same spot like 5 or more times for ink to go in solid and takes forever workin same spot to get it done!!!!!!! did u have that same problem when startin out??? what could i b doin i wrong?
hmmm... funny,,, im learning way more from this self proclaimed "scratcher " than from any "pros " out there :) ...... and just to give in to all the whining ,,,,, sure , ill take and apprenticeship,,,,,,,,,do you have 50 000 job openings available for apprentice tattooists? ya,, i didnt think so . thanks guy, great vids! :)
I GET IT NOW lmao... I cant thank you enough... When I was running my gun, It was getting hot as hell really fast &the spark by the contact screw would damn near put your eye out.. I couldnt understand what I was doing wrong.. I got on here to have a visual answer to my question.YIKES!!! I was on here for 2hours &was just about to give up when I came across your video.Thank you again... Screw the haters ...Ur doing something you love & your helping ppl whn you can... Good luck &much love man!!
@headshothorror4488 I thought you were "apprenticed" Your really and idiot, no...more like a hemriod that never goes away. your "apprenticed" and on you tube asking questions? LMAO! post your work punk!
i just watched another video from element tattooing and he said when you adjust for your triangle and adjusting the screw you are supposed to hold down the armature bar while doing so
well he is wrong...you cant see this triangle unless it is running....he is adjusting for contact gap more than likely....that you do need to have the machine not running and the armature bar depressed
@fattasticvoyage when you put ur machine in front of the tv can you see the slow motion ???? Then do that and see the motion when it's 50 duty ,,,, is it waving type motion ? Is it slow up and down motion ? Is it fast up and down motion ? Trying to see it for liner cause u can't really see the image in middle of front spring that good on single pass liner, or that's what I was told but on my short china I gess front spring I can see it just not my 18 thicker spring
Im sorry mr bob tyrrell.....I didnt see you video up here?Just another prick like the rest of them. There is no right or wrong way to tune you prick,if you havent learned that yet you need to stop totaly.I might like a slower liner or a softer shader than you, would that make me wrong...this isnt a how you tattoo its a fucking guideline you idiot.save your bullshit for shit you know about.
my man u best say what the fuck is wrong and wat u think is right otherwise ur just talking shit and we don't needs that shit round here we don't take kindly to those folks round here
What is voltage for strong liner what is to high , how hard should it hit finger of finger please try to answer this I run at 11 and seems smooth but hurts like fuck
voltage will depend on many variables...but the voltage only makes it run.if you touch the gromet with the tip of your finger very softly it shouldnt die down,it should die down if a little pressure is added though....basically you want a liner to hit hard enough to put in a good line but at the same time as soft as possible to do the same job.And a tattoo is needles stabbing the skin....yes it hurts....some more than others
@TATTOOTRAINING@skinz1234 No nickle shader is a nickle not 2 ,,,,,,,,2 is for a color packer or u can shade with and color with a nickle or 2 nikle gap u have to try it and see what works for you , you can try diferent tension also there is no one correct setting for any machine allot or most tattooist never used a tension gauge or ever will they tune by ear and feel , everyone likes different set ups no one setup is right
bitch i banned you because your as ignorant as this fool who doesnt comprehend shit. youll never make it bashing the people who volunteer the best information freely available .
Yea@Headshothorror4488 I feel your pain , he thinks he is god but he outlines his alien with a blob mark above lol :) , maybe you can help me out , I see you all over and I believe you know much more than that hack lmol , teaching lil kids on u tube , his hands will be broken , but they see it's wrong so only laugh and say let him help them scar people , let's see if Angelo let's him make ink , he said that lmol hahahahahahah . A no one hack making his ink , he needs his med's lmol
@Tattoogirl1nonly Yeah , don't sweat it he is a nobody Snob , fuck him , like u said he is mostly wrong and teaches lil kids on here cuz he Neva made it and talks down to people cause he never did and how he grew up , getting raped in the ass by a shop artist lol , so don't sweat it I didn't he ain't shit , I can give u some tattooist names on here with real info , but not public like this hack
@Tattoogirl1nonly Yea don't sweat it he is a snob , ur better off forgetting all he said,I help, listen to the shop artist that say he wrong, and Angelo uses a nickel gap , shader 300 to 400 tension it's all how u tattoo , guy uses the same or a bit higher like color packer , torrents are out for both and more , he couldn't answer those so I did, meter = front post n back post ,, not spring deck , ur right tattoo artist say he is wrong ( my shop frends too) dnt sweat a hack
They are all set to do, what they are suppose to -but alle of them, are to "weak" to do a good solid color, unless I tune them up to 10 V. That´s just to high.... Right?
well hopefully you looked at more than this video...and maybe my others might help out more, reallythis does nothing more than help you get a good even adjustment of duty cycle.....which is good to have aroun 35-60.....most say 50 but i have seen good machines in the area I just stated...and voltage doesnt matter as long as the color/shader machine runs good and had a soft touch not hard.....I have shaders that range from 2.5volts up to right around 9-10 volts...so no(volts mean nothing)
@fattasticvoyage "...and voltage doesnt matter as long as the color/shader machine runs good and had a soft touch not hard....." well being that too much voltage is what makes it hit hard in the first place id say voltage does matter. the reason you have such a variation from 2 to 10 is because you dont KNOW what the rear spring tension is ... come on give in and swallow the red pill bro
@TATTOOTRAINING Haha I feel bad for you that you think everyone is that kid who stalks you , I said check my my space , you can fucking call me , I don't sound like a dude there buddy , so you think why you want but your really mental , think about it , he helped me out and answered all my questions you didn't , why would he stalk you ? Like for real lol , he knows allot more than you , at least it seems that way you never answered anything for me
@Tattoogirl1nonly gee for a older lady HA you pretty mutch went ghetto and expossed you self for who you are HEADSHOP , i blocked you because you make a fake ID and ask the same dumb ass questions, give it up. if you are all that and you know all that then why do you keep stalking me ? you dont know shit you will never know shit and the only people who talk to you dont know shit.
@TATTOOTRAINING , lmol , OMG you are really crazy holy shit!! Wow , you need your medication , and help , I do not care what your crazy ass thinks , I don't think you know anything at all for real , now your nuts , completely nuts !! :( , I told you , you can check my my space anything you like honey , I am not headship or whoever you think , you don't want to check and believe me FINE , your just crazy in your head , that heashop kid really fucked you up huh
@TATTOOTRAINING , lmol , you are a true nut , I'm sorry he fucked you up in the head , and I'm a woman so I can't curse and get MADD when you disrespect me ? That's not fair . don't make shit up either . You don't even know were to place meter leads , you said front post and back post , it's front binding post and rear spring mount screw on top , lol why did you tell that kid that ? I'm sorry but you are crazy in your head so I defend myself that's all
hey man you should be getting paid, youv help me no end, i gota a couple of the chink machines (they the cast ones)with a little bit of mods and your info they running real good nice one man
Yea it's a e book , if u go google how to tune tattoo machine it should pop up Shows well tells u how to set up cutback liner n reg liner n shad colourer u could check there n if u still want let me know lol I know u know wat u doing just figurd u might want info 4 fre
the triangle thing just basically keep your machine around 40-50% duty cycle thats up to down...if it is not near 50% duty the machine is supposedly not tuned that great...some of mine are arounf 35% and some are right on 50% i for one cant tell the difference that much...but it will help out a little...plus i guess you have an even contact wth skin not contact 30% of the time...lol
i believe thinner is liner because you want the shading action to kind of give in which is what makes your shading so smooth. but i'm just guessing i'm begginer going way over my head. and i'm going to do a really bad ass drawing for my first self tattoo. i'll let you know how it turns out.
you want to have voltage....it has to run...the armature bar has got to be slamming into the front coil ,if it is not its not going to run right...but being a shader it need to run slower than the liner but still be running and hit softer....basically look for some ebooks on it it might help out some...but basically a liner has a smaller gap around 2mm and shader around 2.5-4mm and a color has aroun 3-6mm .....depends on what you like...
so basicaly a blured figure 8 instead of the triangle you see looking from the side.and with a shader you have a longer throw and you'll have a small gap between the upper and lower part of the blured 8. it's easier to show than to explain. i'll work on getting that on video for you. great posts by the way!
the figure eight method is good for having a good gap....connecting 00 is a liner little gap 00 is a shader and bigger gapped 0 0 is for color....Yeah nothing new it is a gap trick....this method basically gets your duty right so the machine operates better...on the same machine you will not see a difference but a machine with sprngs setup for shading and compared to lining the triangle can be perfect and the nipple read different..
i havn't seen the triangle method of tuning a machine before. not hating just never saw it. gonna have to give it a try. the way i was taught to tune my machine was to look at the machine from the front of the armature bar and watch your nipple as you run the machine.for a liner you want to see a figure 8. this is your eye seeing the nipple as it is in both positions, armature bar touching coils and then the spring touching the contact screw.
all my machines have a nice tight triangle and all have different blurs on the nipple....again the figure eight gets your gap at a good starting point and the triangle blur gets it at a good duty...add the right springs capacitor and you usually have a decent machine
Well at the tip it does great color and soft shade and move it back and it does great shadnig...basically to go from a soft to like semi hard hitting machine...you should try it i know your a professional I guess but really you should...whats the worse that can happen...put another on it?but use a soft like 16 ga.....but I have never had any help with this...there are no professionals that want an apprentice around my way...unless you have $10,000...I dont....and no one will help for free
I want to work in a shop I wanna work hard for what i do...but i dont have that chance...plus I have been thinking about it alot and I dont wanna be a dick like near about every professional out there...all they do is talk shit and rag on people...and other artists work....i would love some help so would the people looking at my vid's but i dont see anyone standing up...just pro's that are scratchers worse than me...and not helping anyone...so rag on me for trying to help
none of what you said has anything to do with how to tune a machine. and your representing scratchers everywhere? you need to learn how to spell scratcher (scrather)?
Im sorry if it didnt help you out..but you do have to set you machine up first for this to work....and sorry i didnt spell your favorite word right....i have a hard keyboard.....
i like your videos way better than some out there...and forget the backstabbers...they're not worth your time...i'm an artist, and been tattooing since may this year...always wanted to tattoo...i invested alot, and had to practice on myself, and some friends as well...i've been only doing black art...having problem to put colors in...any suggestions? and i want to invest in a rotary machine, what do you think about those?
I have no experience in rotary...I know there are some good ones out ther like the swash buckle the stigma's, and theres a guy called pirate that has some that look real good....about your color maybe your using bad ink...maybe running to fast, maybe running to slow....you want a color machine to hit real soft and not run to fast.....maybe your needle depth needs to be right....I keep my needles in a littl more with color but still have it hit enough to lay some in...
I would go to McDonalds....sounds like fun and the nice taste of a greasy burger....only bad thing is I dont wanna see you behind the counter no more.....seeing your face at the register just makes my stomach turn and i cant eat......we all know you have a baby sized penis and the last time you had sex was with a one armed prostitute named steve...so your life definetly sux worse than mine......thank you jon lajoie
i wanted to start an apprenticeship but it fell through cant work for free and pay dues. but i do believe in my art and i want to get into tattoo would you think its possible to start with just 1 machine? or what would you suspect be the minimal number of machines needed to process an average modern tattoo
I dont think you should be trying to do tattoo's with that statement......you should never wanna be average in this industry....you should be the best or at least try to be...you probably wont be but its better to strive than settle for something.....I'm not trying to be a dick but its the truth....but i would buy at least two machines...one standard for lining and another you can shade with and then make the gap bigger when you wanna color....better to get three though...and spend money no crap
kinda had a feeling you would say something like that just curious and i appreciate your time.. its not that i gave up i needed to get a job that could better support my family my wife was pregnant and out of work so it was up to me to support us.. but im doing fine as an artist / mechanic.
Good genuine info when I started tattooing in the late 70s you got no help from anyone it was very much a closed shop so you had to learn the hard way getting machines was very difficult indeed to-day its a lot better and people share good info but there is still a lot of back stabbers in the industry. Keep it up
could you make a vid with all your machine spec like were got them and what you added to them because i am trying to put together a machine and this would help me out thank you
Hope this helps......music is new 5fdp ......if need any additional help i am here for you.....id rather see someone fuck up right than fuck wrong.....hope the tats go in smooth and last forever.....fatty McTatty aka tatmandu
thanks for putting all the info brother

Two of my favorite tattoo artists never served an apprenticeship and are award winning artist

fhashfajhfa 11 months ago
@fhashfajhfa personally find this the best way if your gonna use one,but if you look at my arm bar screw there is no way i can put on on the regular beginner way....lol....low profile screws...but better not to use them as if you do the machienwill only run right when it there if that how you tuned it,and basically they only lower the sound and make a little extra give in the springs, but thats NOT wanted on some types
fattasticvoyage 11 months ago
I am about to start tattooing for the first time ^_^ and I gotta say This video is very simple but it is super easy to understand for a beginner like myself. I am going to practice on synthetic skin then on myself to make sure I am ready to practice on people

SouthernDoom666 1 year ago
This didn't tell me how to set up a tattoo machine. When I turn the voltage up, the machine just snaps down. When I turn the voltage down, it snaps up. It doesn't vibrate like they show in these videos.

Same for machines... each person must get to know the limits of their equipment... sacrifice your own skin to see what it can do, and start SMALL on others, so that if you mess up, a prof can always fix it.
artista7100 1 year ago 8

Ask josh Carlton, Angelo Grisafi, Paul booth, Even Eikon, or ANY good artist if they use a gage, they will say A WHAT haha ? NO builders don't either. @iamjustinmason so I like to help people...i was not apprenticed,i got into a shop because my work was good...I am self taught, this is my method of how i tune.i didnt read it in any book or have a friend help its all mine..i used basic physics and electronis to help me out...and knowing what every parts function does is a good thing too...id love to see someone with a tattoo thats awesome and he say yea this guy on youtube helped me out so much...and really most artist have sold their souls
fattasticvoyage 1 year ago 12
@iamjustinmason : it's all good saying 'LET SCRATCHERS GET AN APPRENTISHIP' here in the uk nobody wants to give us apprentiships. seriously i would give my life for an apprentiship! i would enjoy makin brews allday long if someone would be willing to teach me. According to people like you all us scratchers who love the art should not have the right to learn other ways. My god feller. get all tattooist to give apprentiships and there would be no need for us to learn other ways.
cackpants 1 year ago
@cackpants Ive noticed that the best tattooists - the ones whos work stand out from the rest, are generaly not up their own arse and dont mind giving you tips and encouragment. Its the ones who are average/shit who feel threatened. Its all about competition. I know a guy who is self taught, hasnt got any tats himself and has been voted top100 in europe a few times.

@iamjustinmason "We need not give scratchers info that they should be learning" ??? What an idiot. Somehow some Tattooist or even enlightened scratchers are so full of pride an suck on their own wieners. fattasticvoyage 1 year ago
Oh yeah by the way what size cap you got on that 10 wrap 5 dollar coil setup? a 10 or 22 or 47 what? Just curious cause your armature bar is on crooked and not shimmed correctly. Please apprentice somewhere. Thanks no insults intended just want people to be clean and safe and not teaching scratchers evenmore bad habits.
iamjustinmason 1 year ago
@iamjustinmason just curious...this is a side veiw..so even if the arm bar was crooked...there is no way to tell...plus why the hell would u shim and arm bar....you shim the coils....you need to leave about a business card gap when circut is closed on the rear coil....So idont understand waht ay of this is...and apparently you didnt watch the video as well as there isno 5 dollar bill coil in it...sorry
fattasticvoyage 1 year ago
Sorry brother, but everything you have said is about 30 percent correct. Liners should be 1st of all not shimmed with a round washer it must be flat( for rear spring) and should be same front and rear example 16 rear, 16 front whatever.. You never look at it by the side. YOU always look at the front and you should see a figure 8 on the armature bar. You should never run your machines at different speeds, just adjust the shader and liner to run on same duty and volts. Capasitors are the key!
iamjustinmason 1 year ago
@iamjustinmason i shim my coils with coil shims...dont know what that means....and the springs dont have to be the same..you can preach the fact that the tension is messed up,and ur half right...but its how you set it up....you can look at it both ways...one is for duty and the one ur talkin is speed....and machines run at different speeds...i mena i like a faster liner...maybe others do too....and voltageis nto important..i would expect a 12 wrap to take more than an 8 by all means..
fattasticvoyage 1 year ago
This is @ tattootraining. Yes i picked the name tattooingmyself cause i do tattoo myself. You know why , cause i am a professional tattoo artist unlike you. I tattoo myself in my SHOP unlike you who got fired 15 years ago and now you tattoo yourself in your MOMMYS basement. I would say get a apprenticeship looser but you already tried that and FAILED ! Don't let this guy and his gage fool you all. NO pro uses one.
Tattooingmyself 1 year ago
@Tattooingmyself finally....finally....i was saying that the whole time too man...i have been in many shops and been to conventions adn watched rebuilding in person adn never once see one of those fuckin guges...they are rediculous...thanks for letting someone know though..maybe u saying it will be more than me
fattasticvoyage 1 year ago
@fattasticvoyage No problem, i see he likes to think he knows it all. NOT ONE builder me or my fellow artists in my shop buy from uses a gage. NOT ONE artist tunes there machine with one. Your way is allot closer then that guys. He also told me he was a apprentice 15 yrs ago hahahah so why is he on you tube and not in a shop ? Cause he probably brought his gage with him haha. He just told me i am no tattoo artist and called me a haedshop ? What the fuck that means only god knows.
Tattooingmyself 1 year ago
instead of people hating, they should be grateful that anyone is even willing to share any info. just take it and if it don't work for ya, then discard it. if it does then use it. people wanna moan when others don't want to share info, but when they do they want to hate on it!
swiney007 1 year ago
@swiney007 no HATING INVOLVED, just want to save skin man thats it, if ur into art then apprentice its simple as that. Theres a reasons we build our ownd 3 thousand dollar machines, its cause weve pu the time in. Theres also a reason you cant buy what we can its called licenses, knowledge, shop, and cred. Thanks
iamjustinmason 1 year ago
@iamjustinmason thanks for your reply to my comment, but whos skin are you wanting to save? i fully appreciate what you are saying, but if people are wanting to go to " scratchers" that don't have $3000 machines, then im afraid it is entirely up to them.its not like they are children. yes there will always be the argument about apprentiships but not ALL tattoo artists did apprentiships. its the same as most things, people are gonna do what they want. neither you nor myself will change that.thnx
swiney007 1 year ago
lol....wheres some of your work at bro? You somewhat act like you know what your saying...but then again....if you were really any good at tattooing you'd be in a shop... am i right? @pkrwood12 well apprently you havent figured out how to use youtube yet....and i have work up here from when i first started....nothing new though....and i do work in a shop and do cut my own springs from lumber ties.....and setting up a machine has nothing to do with cutting springs just so you know...mayb you shuld pay attention as well..where is ur videos?

awesome man thx for all the tips and gettin back to me, when u skulpt your lines do u use the 3 pass method, once over, then little circles how fat u want em, then skimming the edges? my tats look real good fresh but still the edges of my lines aint really smooth. looks good till it heals then i see how blown some lines r. i mainly use a 5 round how bout u?
skinz1234 1 year ago
thanks for the reply i build mine up too with round shaders, but still gotta go over it too many times takes forever and then some spots r darker than other afterwards, ill try them things u said, weird thing is alot of beginners have this problem im talkin bout did you? u really think its 1 off these things??? i got 350-375grams of tension on the spring so has 2 b one of the things u mentioned huh:) Thanks
skinz1234 1 year ago
@skinz1234 I have never had a problem with the lines...they always stuck, the onnly problem I had was with the ink, some of the inke I used faded bad after healing. Now I use a different ink and its great.I use my round shaders on single pass lines as well. The only problem i ever really had was with ink,and with power supply.I got better stuff now,and learned to clean my contacts all the time,by sanding it down a hair.
fattasticvoyage 1 year ago
@fattasticvoyage what ink do u use cuz a cuple of tats ive done the lines were spotty and i no the machine was tuned right and they were realy nice clean lines 4 about two weeks then the started fading or spotting
killahkilldevilhillz 1 year ago
@fattasticvoyage Coil wraps and caps are the main components, if thats not right the springs dont mean shit. Learn some things before you try to teach them. Maybe I should post a video on how to do brain surgery. Oh wait I dont know how to do that... hint. Learn more about machines before you really damage some peoples lives. Or keep on scratching and make more work for artist like us. By the way they are pigments not INKS. I hate Youtube! Im really not trashing you bro, just please apprentice.
iamjustinmason 1 year ago
@iamjustinmason u need to learn more before commenting..you can use any capacitor...or better yet u dont even have too use on at all..they are only physical dumps for a certain amount of power(although i dont reccomend it)....only things coils offer is more power per wrap, but in consumes more voltage...I use 8 wraps...and have no problems...springs and the tension involved on the other hand do make the difference...bend u a spring as hard as u can and try to run it...then tell me its coils n cap
fattasticvoyage 1 year ago
Thanks
iamjustinmason 1 year ago
@iamjustinmason A capacitor holds a certain amount of enrgy to dump out, instaed of it all pushing through...yes they can help, but are not vital...again u have a voltage or ur machine, but anything can play to differ it....if ur coils wraps are cotton wrapped an not plain with a covering...voltage will be alot lower...material ur frame is made of...hell ur footpedal if its not a good metal...there are lots ofthins to consider hince why voltage doesnt matter
fattasticvoyage 1 year ago
i try to stretch pretty good but kinda hard when doin yourself. just seems like i dont know, whenever i got a tattoo from someone else seemed they went over it once and it stuck, me i gotta keep reworkin it :/
skinz1234 1 year ago
@skinz1234 ...just depends really man,if your trying for a single pass line, that what you need to go for....maybe more needle, more speed, less speed, more pressure.....it can be many things.....i usually build up my lines, and dont use liner needles
fattasticvoyage 1 year ago
hey just a question,.i adjusted everything right even used correct springs but when lining or shading seems i have to go over same spot like 5 or more times for ink to go in solid and takes forever workin same spot to get it done!!!!!!! did u have that same problem when startin out??? what could i b doin i wrong?

i just watched another video from element tattooing and he said when you adjust for your triangle and adjusting the screw you are supposed to hold down the armature bar while doing so
magictragic253 2 years ago
well he is wrong...you cant see this triangle unless it is running....he is adjusting for contact gap more than likely....that you do need to have the machine not running and the armature bar depressed
fattasticvoyage 2 years ago
@fattasticvoyage when you put ur machine in front of the tv can you see the slow motion ???? Then do that and see the motion when it's 50 duty ,,,, is it waving type motion ? Is it slow up and down motion ? Is it fast up and down motion ? Trying to see it for liner cause u can't really see the image in middle of front spring that good on single pass liner, or that's what I was told but on my short china I gess front spring I can see it just not my 18 thicker spring

What is voltage for strong liner what is to high , how hard should it hit finger of finger please try to answer this I run at 11 and seems smooth but hurts like fuck
Headshothorror4488 2 years ago
voltage will depend on many variables...but the voltage only makes it run.if you touch the gromet with the tip of your finger very softly it shouldnt die down,it should die down if a little pressure is added though....basically you want a liner to hit hard enough to put in a good line but at the same time as soft as possible to do the same job.And a tattoo is needles stabbing the skin....yes it hurts....some more than others

Im having problems with my shaders/color guns.
They are all set to do, what they are suppose to -but alle of them, are to "weak" to do a good solid color, unless I tune them up to 10 V. That´s just to high.... Right?
It´s MZ and D Fowler guns
nemesisvega 2 years ago
well hopefully you looked at more than this video...and maybe my others might help out more, reallythis does nothing more than help you get a good even adjustment of duty cycle.....which is good to have aroun 35-60.....most say 50 but i have seen good machines in the area I just stated...and voltage doesnt matter as long as the color/shader machine runs good and had a soft touch not hard.....I have shaders that range from 2.5volts up to right around 9-10 volts...so no(volts mean nothing)
fattasticvoyage 2 years ago

Like for real lol , he knows allot more than you , at least it seems that way you never answered anything for me
Tattoogirl1nonly 1 year ago
@nemesisvega what power supply do you use ?
a cheap supply will push 1.5 Amps and run weak a 2 amp system will push a machine at 3v what a 1.5A will need 9v to do

and when i make the triangle as thin as possible thats for shaders or liners?
sorry for my dumb questions :/
lilshouty14 2 years ago
the triangle thing just basically keep your machine around 40-50% duty cycle thats up to down...if it is not near 50% duty the machine is supposedly not tuned that great...some of mine are arounf 35% and some are right on 50% i for one cant tell the difference that much...but it will help out a little...plus i guess you have an even contact wth skin not contact 30% of the time...lol
fattasticvoyage 2 years ago
i believe thinner is liner because you want the shading action to kind of give in which is what makes your shading so smooth. but i'm just guessing i'm begginer going way over my head. and i'm going to do a really bad ass drawing for my first self tattoo. i'll let you know how it turns out.
parsleysprigs 2 years ago
hey got a quick question when i try to shade in a tattoo my machine cuts off in the middle of shading or right when i stick it in the skin
do you think it would be the powersupply or d you think its how i did the settings or jus not enough voltage?
lilshouty14 2 years ago
you want to have voltage....it has to run...the armature bar has got to be slamming into the front coil ,if it is not its not going to run right...but being a shader it need to run slower than the liner but still be running and hit softer....basically look for some ebooks on it it might help out some...but basically a liner has a smaller gap around 2mm and shader around 2.5-4mm and a color has aroun 3-6mm .....depends on what you like...

so what am i supposed to look at? where the nipple is supposed to be?
lilshouty14 2 years ago
well the blur happens in the middle of the arm bar..the point is right at the nipple....
fattasticvoyage 2 years ago
so basicaly a blured figure 8 instead of the triangle you see looking from the side.and with a shader you have a longer throw and you'll have a small gap between the upper and lower part of the blured 8. it's easier to show than to explain. i'll work on getting that on video for you. great posts by the way!
quagmirereese 2 years ago
the figure eight method is good for having a good gap....connecting 00 is a liner little gap 00 is a shader and bigger gapped 0 0 is for color....Yeah nothing new it is a gap trick....this method basically gets your duty right so the machine operates better...on the same machine you will not see a difference but a machine with sprngs setup for shading and compared to lining the triangle can be perfect and the nipple read different..
fattasticvoyage 2 years ago
i havn't seen the triangle method of tuning a machine before. not hating just never saw it. gonna have to give it a try. the way i was taught to tune my machine was to look at the machine from the front of the armature bar and watch your nipple as you run the machine.for a liner you want to see a figure 8. this is your eye seeing the nipple as it is in both positions, armature bar touching coils and then the spring touching the contact screw.
quagmirereese 2 years ago
all my machines have a nice tight triangle and all have different blurs on the nipple....again the figure eight gets your gap at a good starting point and the triangle blur gets it at a good duty...add the right springs capacitor and you usually have a decent machine
fattasticvoyage 2 years ago
oh and by the way? why is your spring hanging out so far past the contact?
bluecollarirons 2 years ago
Well at the tip it does great color and soft shade and move it back and it does great shadnig...basically to go from a soft to like semi hard hitting machine...you should try it i know your a professional I guess but really you should...whats the worse that can happen...put another on it?but use a soft like 16 ga.....but I have never had any help with this...there are no professionals that want an apprentice around my way...unless you have $10,000...I dont....and no one will help for free
fattasticvoyage 2 years ago
I want to work in a shop I wanna work hard for what i do...but i dont have that chance...plus I have been thinking about it alot and I dont wanna be a dick like near about every professional out there...all they do is talk shit and rag on people...and other artists work....i would love some help so would the people looking at my vid's but i dont see anyone standing up...just pro's that are scratchers worse than me...and not helping anyone...so rag on me for trying to help
fattasticvoyage 2 years ago
none of what you said has anything to do with how to tune a machine. and your representing scratchers everywhere? you need to learn how to spell scratcher (scrather)?
the triangle? i wish it were that easy.. lol
bluecollarirons 2 years ago
Im sorry if it didnt help you out..but you do have to set you machine up first for this to work....and sorry i didnt spell your favorite word right....i have a hard keyboard.....
fattasticvoyage 2 years ago
i like your videos way better than some out there...and forget the backstabbers...they're not worth your time...i'm an artist, and been tattooing since may this year...always wanted to tattoo...i invested alot, and had to practice on myself, and some friends as well...i've been only doing black art...having problem to put colors in...any suggestions? and i want to invest in a rotary machine, what do you think about those?
fabienmelanson 2 years ago
I have no experience in rotary...I know there are some good ones out ther like the swash buckle the stigma's, and theres a guy called pirate that has some that look real good....about your color maybe your using bad ink...maybe running to fast, maybe running to slow....you want a color machine to hit real soft and not run to fast.....maybe your needle depth needs to be right....I keep my needles in a littl more with color but still have it hit enough to lay some in...

thank you m8...well apreciated!

crazyjoe8686 2 years ago
I would go to McDonalds....sounds like fun and the nice taste of a greasy burger....only bad thing is I dont wanna see you behind the counter no more.....seeing your face at the register just makes my stomach turn and i cant eat......we all know you have a baby sized penis and the last time you had sex was with a one armed prostitute named steve...so your life definetly sux worse than mine......thank you jon lajoie
fattasticvoyage 2 years ago
i wanted to start an apprenticeship but it fell through cant work for free and pay dues. but i do believe in my art and i want to get into tattoo would you think its possible to start with just 1 machine? or what would you suspect be the minimal number of machines needed to process an average modern tattoo
chobies 2 years ago
I dont think you should be trying to do tattoo's with that statement......you should never wanna be average in this industry....you should be the best or at least try to be...you probably wont be but its better to strive than settle for something.....I'm not trying to be a dick but its the truth....but i would buy at least two machines...one standard for lining and another you can shade with and then make the gap bigger when you wanna color....better to get three though...and spend money no crap
fattasticvoyage 2 years ago
kinda had a feeling you would say something like that just curious and i appreciate your time.. its not that i gave up i needed to get a job that could better support my family my wife was pregnant and out of work so it was up to me to support us.. but im doing fine as an artist / mechanic.
chobies 2 years ago
Good genuine info when I started tattooing in the late 70s you got no help from anyone it was very much a closed shop so you had to learn the hard way getting machines was very difficult indeed to-day its a lot better and people share good info but there is still a lot of back stabbers in the industry. Keep it up
