  • Dweezil definitely has some good Jazz chops as well as "tapping techniques" 'influenced from (his childhood idol... Eddie Van Halen. he is a great guitarist. However, i saw him on the Jay Leno show recently with Alice Cooper doing "Schools Out For Summer" and i thought at the time that Dweezil was using the song as a showcase for his chops..doing tapping fills with every open space that he could take advantage of, it threw Alice off his rhythm....Wanker

  • What guitar is he playing? I can't find any info about it

  • n'importe quoi, il a nom virtuose... les concervatoites sont plein d'annonimes qui jouent mieux que ce fils apappa!!

  • I am tired of him. Always with fancy or relic guitars but nothing more than an average player. His father was a legend.

  • @ottoAmoultos Ever hear his solo on Pygmy Twylyte? Actually all his solo's on the "Return of the son of.." cd are nuts! Frank would be very proud of him! EASILY, one of the best guitarists out there today!

  • @ottoAmoultos Average player-sorry they don't bother taking on tough FZ songs. Dweezil could have stuck with easier, poppier songs to tour with, but he mixed in some tough ones like this. I saw him trade licks with Steve Vai, and he held his own (his phrases and tone actually upstaged Steve-no mean feat). If you're tired of him, it ain't because he's average-that's just a ridiculous comment. And why the fuck complain about the guitars he plays-a bit of jealously perhaps?

  • @ottoAmoultos You're an idiot.

  • @ottoAmoultos Sorry, you're right, just to be clear I wasn't making an argument, I was stating a fact. You said that he's an average player. This is clearly wrong, ergo you are an idiot.

Watch the Zappa Plays Zappa DVD where they play some of the hardest pieces available - Inca Roads, Andy, Zombie Woof, The Black Page #2, Echidna's Arf (Of You). Watch his beautifully phrased solo on Black Napkins. He's much more than average.

  • @AustinTassletine When somebody says sth about someone else, expresses his personal opinion, ergo there is no clear truth about what is nice or not in music. From your tone I suppose that you are trying to start silly fights or you are very small and you have not developed conversation skills yet. So I'm not going to respond to you again and I wish you will not refer to me too. Enjoy the music you like and let others to do so.

  • @ottoAmoultos You presented your "opinion" as a fact. If you'd said "I don't think..." or "In my opinion..." maybe you'd hava case, but you didn't. My conversation skills are fully developed, thanks. I wouldn't say I'm small. I would say I'm about average size, but I'm not sure you would agree, seeing as your definition of average is very obviously very different to everyone else's.

  • wow. lmao. i think i'd be able to play those last 4 notes pretty well!

  • No doubt that Frank could've not played this for years and just picked up a guitar and played this (and even notice that in the video Dweezil says it wasn't normally played on guitar)

  • @kilobyte111 Frank never played this on guitar. It was usually played on synths or percussion. Frank also played very little between recordings and tours, so would have to "redevelop his callouses", as he put it.

  • someone got taps ? Please.

    I MUST play this.

  • Dweezil rips...

  • great !!!!!

  • Frank Zappa was so far ahead of his time it wasn't funny. His son would have the genes.

  • That's really cool. Thanks for uploading.

  • HE FUCKING FUCKING FUCKING RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I THINK THAT HE RAPPED STEVE VAI IN THAT DUEL!

  • @ellioteaston93 steve vai is way better

  • @ellioteaston93 I think Schelia Gonzalez won

  • what is chitarrist? and by the way , who cares about what you know? stupid people below

  • @danielhl22 I think it says "Chittarista", but the "a" is covered. In that case it's Italian for "guitarist".

  • @hugeshows...that's what i said... If anything, the arrangement is composed of using hybrid(combining) scales..i hear Dorian - Mixolydian ,fourths, fifths and sixth intervals and even some passing Melodic Minor Modes. The Melodic Minor scales are very abstract sounding modes that are used by jazz musicians to get that "playing out" kind of vibe. I have been foolin' around with the guitar for close to thirty years and have respect for the Zappa"s...so fuck off.

  • Those aren't "scales". I just love it when hacks try to diminish the accomplishments of serious players such as Dweezil Zappa, and by extension, his father in some sort of effort to make themselves feel better about their own lackluster playing. I'll bet that you couldn't decipher the key he's playing in, much less count in seven. So do yourself a favor and try to LEARN from what you don't understand rather than showing your ignorance by insulting it.

  • whats the big deal about doing scales what if jimi and stevie didit go to guitar center and listen to the kids today not one orginal thought between them

  • he has the gibson P 90 pickups WTF?

  • great playing but man that is one tacky looking guitar

  • I love his SG...

    It's sooo 80s ^^

  • If you watch Dweezil do the run slowly, he holds the seventh note an extra beat so it becomes an eight. When he speeds up to the tempo of the original run, he drops the sustain off so it becomes a true seven. Any 7 beat is going to be subdivided into a group of 3 and 4 ... or maybe 5 and 2 if you're really weird.

  • Counting in seven is really easy. It's just a 4/4 plus a 3/4. Or a 3/4 and a 4/4. But don't do what Dweezil suggests and count out to "seven." Seven has two syllables. Count out to "sev ..." then hit the one. Or do it in French.

  • @DouglasWatts its not in 7/4 or 7/8 its phrased in 7 ...watch his foot he is counting in 4

  • Dweezil is no doubt a top shelf ace guitarist, I for one don't think he needs to "work" on his playing as he suggests in this video-

Now if he really wants to make a difference somewhere, he should work on taming & cropping that CrAzY UNI-BROW he's cultivating on his forehead!

Thant thing looks like some kind of giant black Mothra Caterpillar monster from the old Godzilla movies ... Eeeek, scary stuff!!! :O)

  • Thank Frank Zappa for Dweezil Zappa

  • It's kind of like a rolling snake! Haha

  • Awesome guitar player and super nice guy

  • this isn't as much of a bitch to play as the rollo section in St Alphonzo's, but it makes a great economy picking excercise

  • My bad, he doesn't, it's the marimba parts at the end of the keyboard solo that he sings.

  • sweet SG COPY GUITAR

  • Star Wars intro...

  • damn man thats insane

  • Tehkää perässä.

  • @korhosenmasa wtf language is that

  • @ddrummer9111 It`s Finnish.

  • @ddrummer9111 Ever heard of French..?

  • OMFG CD-Rom?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

    XDDDDDD

  • i love he's SG

  • @ziggyplayguitar It's so nice and sparkly!

  • imagine him playing it at full speed? it would be insane

  • Listen to it on the FZ album 'the Best Band you never heard in your Life' it does sound insane. Apparently the Auditioning Keyboardists for ZPZ had only 3 days to learn both Inca Roads and the Black Page, and they weren't giving the Music at all. Must have been tough.

  • Well, they sure had to be "The Best Musicians You Never Heard In Your Life"

  • (English Translation) Dweezil, with his brother Ahmet and his mother Gail, is gearing up for a tour in homage of his father, Frank Zappa, which will come to France next November. The virtuoso guitarist gave us an exclusive guitar lesson, sharing with us two musical phrases drawn from his father's celebrated standard 'Inca Roads' as well as a series of "wicked" warm-up exercises. Anxiously anticipating Dweezil's fourth solo album? Just wait until next year.

  • (translation cont'd) News: Dweezil and Ahmet Zappa will be at the Zenith in Paris on November 7, 2005, to put on the show Zappa Plays Zappa, with many surprise guests.

  • ENGLISH PLEASE!

  • What, you don't speak French? Ha

  • HAHAHHA..Bastard

  • Anyone know what notes he's hitting or what mode/scale that is?

  • yes

  • care to share?

  • chromatic

  • cal, it is not simply a chromatic scale. first thing to know (except for the "septuplets from hell" reprise, which is all septuplets in in 4 4 time) each 7 notes represents a bar (7 16 time at 120 bpm). the first 9 bars are in Lydian mode, key changes each bar: F, D, F, D, F, D, F, D then G. the next 7 bars are in Dorian or Minor mode (take your pick, since it is a partial scale), key changes each bar: C#, D, B, Bb, C, D, E. then the last two bars are in 4 4 time. hope this helps!

  • Jesus. I think I understand what you mean. So basically after every few notes Zappa changes modes AND keys? I'm not sure how this will help me play this damn song but you sure did help me understand why Zappa's stuff is so damn complex. Haha.

  • Cal, that is correct! The first bar is in F and the (climbing) notes are B C D E F G A (which is Lydian mode). The second bar is in D and the (descending) notes are B A G# E D C# A (which is also Lydian mode). I would post all of the notes here, but the YouTube company computer processor doesn't seem to want to allow it. I don't use my Channel on here but if you message me, I can e-mail you the notes and/or attach a PDF file where I have tabbed this part of the song using tablature software.

  • That would be awesome, thanks. I'll pm you.

  • Thank you both. The key thing in all FZ's playing - solo or most of his instrumental composing - is the tonal atmosphere he creates with chords AND modes. His solos are tonaly quite stable and the story comes from sound and rhythm.

  • As I hear it, there are no septuplets here och 16th notes frased in groups of seven.

  • gurra9, it is actually both. In the song 'Inca Roads' (from the must-have CD 'One Size Fits All'), starting at about 6:05, this "theme" is played in 7 16 time at about 122 bpm, but in the reprise at about 7:52, the same notes are played really fast in septuplets in 4 4 time. In concert, Dweezil actually plays the septuplet part (written for marimba) on guitar.

  • gurra9, you should see the song originally being laid down live in 1974 on KCET TV Los Angeles in 'The Dub Room Special' with George Duke on lead vocal and keys and Ruth Underwood on vibes, marimba and percussion. (Frank Zappa's guitar solo that ends up on the album was taken from a separate live show in Helsinki.) Speaking of your neighbor, Finnish Zappa Tribute does an excellent cover of this song.

  • Yes, just watch me playing it :D

    /watch?v=Rt8yAjpfmC4

  • its all notated by frank, he could have learned that way too

  • Frank did it with coffee and a pencil in the library

The son is more of a "shredder'...."BUTT"... HE STILL HAS TO FIGURE OUT DADS COMPOSITIONS WITH HIS EARS?....

  • what else would he figure it out with?

  • The notation lying around in the Zappa Vault??????

  • he couldn't read music when he learned the stuff

  • although i would be guilty of not caring about dweezil's original music, he is absolutely more than capable of shredding up on his dad's tunes.

frank was a genius, and seeing as i was only 7 years old when he died, i am eternally grateful to dweezil for letting me see some sick musicians perform his music live (twice and counting).

  • Nice guy. Great dad.

  • I've always referred to the last bit as the 'septuplets from hell.' When Dweezil says it is hard he is clearly understating the fact!

I take my hat off to Dweezil for even attempting this on guitar. His dedication to his Dad's music is truly to be praised.

  • Wow, what a run of notes. I'm going to learn it.

  • Sure he may not be the guitarist his dad was but in some ways he is better technically than dad was. boy that is one nice guitar! I wish I could meet him one day. He seems like such a nice guy. he is my son's hero!

  • dweezil is so good.

  • You have no idea how much this one riff influenced me. I only had an audio transcription of it, I had never heard of frank zappa. I loved the tone and I loved the music. I made learning this one riff my summer objective (This being the thought of somebody who had been playing for about a year), and promptly saw the zappa plays zappa 2006 tour. I also loved the tone and put a P90 on my SG. I didnt know of a video of it existed - thanks for uploading the clip that changed my look at music

  • Bravo Dweezil!!

  • I think that Dweezil is a good guy.

  • I met Dweezil on St Patrick's Day in Chicago in 1994(a few months after his father passed away). He was down to earth, really laid back and cool. Going to see ZPZ in Chicago in Oct. I have tickets to the soundcheck !!

  • well all of you complaining should understand that this aint a scale exercice its piece of music written by one of the most genious composer of 20th century. i believe Zappa had a more mathematical way of approach when he composed. i know that when he improvised he was always thinking about mathematical formula. Dweezil was a shitty guitarist then but if you listen to zappa plays zappa shits you can see obviously that in less than 3 years he became a fantastic guitar player.

  • I only disagree with you when you say "most genius composers of the 20th Century".

I say FZ is one of the best composers OF ALL TIME. Maybe the best.

  • in my mind he is. i dont think i'll heard any music more interessing than his in my life. but you cant say that anybody is the best in any art.

  • nope

  • Dweezil's always been good. It's just not even he could play his father's music until now.

  • "You give clinics on the side - music has died" - Frank Zappa

  • I really hate to say, but this is just something that was never ever meant to be played on guitar....

...Oh wait, that's implied from the video..

  • it's definetely quite technically advanced, but it's great how far you can take the instrument.

  • You'd be better off checking Mike Keneally and Brian Beller doing an acoustic duet version of Inca Roads on guitar and bass.

  • that i'll do.

  • @Crudblud89

Except that Mike Keneally SINGS this passage.

  • wow u guys think this is shit?!!? well umm u kno he had to learn a new picking style to play this right?? this actually really hard becuz u go from the frank gambale style picking to alternate picking which is really hard to do...sooo quit h8ing and take notes..cuz this guy is actually very skilled! plus it's very musical considering he actually knos what he's doin!

  • nothing to add..

indeed he´s very skilled.. great teachers..

    as in Vai or keneally

  • Yeah... just came from the Mike Keneally Inca Roads video, and I must say, with all respect... Dweezil can't even come close in style... although Dweezil sure does have a great technique.

  • My goodness, not only a vulgarian but a racist!

  • When I decide to defend something, I'll let you know. In the meantime, you are still full of shit.

  • I'm not defending anything. Just taking the piss out of you, you useless ponce.

  • Fuck you.

  • your father would say that you're an aladin sane

  • those arent regular scales man... hes doing arrangements that are written for the keys and the wind instruments and making

a mathmatical formula out of it ...have you heard dweezils

latest cd " Go With What You Know...?

  • Sorry, I accidentally clicked the thumbs down instead of thumbs up

  • @transcendrage1 a mathamatical formula?!?!?1 buahahaha do you even know anything about math? Im a engineer and your comment made my day

  • @metachozo Music is analyzed mathematically. Well played Mr Bachelor's Degree. You made the stupid people look smarter.

  • @funkitup4ya Music is written mathematically.. and if you think Dweezil Zappa makes the 'stupid people look smarter' by saying the lick is written in groups of 7 just makes you look really dumb. You don't have to have a Bachelor's degree to count fucking music. It also wasn't even that well played. Haha.

  • sounds fucking amazing, more like it. i'd like to see you do it.

  • you really should post what you've accomplished in music boyo.

  • nice floor

  • now go and learn some more of your dads compositions

and then print them out in tabulature for us please...

    i want alphonsos pancake breakfast!...now

  • haha I'd love that.

  • where i stole the marjuhreen.

  • and then to see him play it now seems like child's play to him.

    nice job!

  • good lord, the ending. fuk

  • I met Dweezil on a golf course one time..Hes a really cool guy, very friendly and an all around nice guy

  • I have a lot of respect for dweezil. I love the zappa plays zappa stuff.

  • ahmet maybe, but not dweezil

  • Yeah, I agree. Dweezil may be a little spoiled, but he's not THAT bad.

  • haha yeah it looks hard

  • Bozzio was right, he has really taken some complex parts and played them on guitar when they were never really meant for guitar.

    Way to go Dweezil.

  • Shazaam
