  • Which one is the douchebag neoconservative now...I think it's Dolenz?

  • Another awesome video....Mickey Dolenz's voice is wonderful. It's like I'm back in my teenage years and listening to my albums. Can't wait to look for more of them.

  • Mike's face at 1:43 says: "Yeah, I'm bad ass!"

  • for a made up tv band they rock!!!!!!!1

  • do you think they were playing their instruments during this vid.? I'd like to think so because nesmith makes his playing effortless. I do know they were a legit band.

  • Rock it Davy! haha!

  • Great video.

  • One of the Monkees finest!

  • One of the Monkees finest!

  • Such a great song. Thanks.

  • Peter Tork. <3 Love how he's making fun of the fact he isn't really playing.

  • mike is actually a very good guitarist in real life

  • mary mary

  • micky <3

  • Yes, Mike Nesmith wrote this song.

  • mmmmm...Mike!

  • They never had a bad song on their tv show!!!!! Monkees forever!!

  • LOOLOLOL

  • I never saw all four Monkees live in concert but I saw Micky Dolenz and Davy Jones live in concert.

  • So sad that the drums are missing from the start...

  • Love :46

  • Davy needs more maracas.

  • Love Mikes 12 string Gretch !

  • six maracas! damn!

  • hehehe...still is too! I see him every few months or so...

  • I love the Monkees and was always happy that my parents named me an "old fashioned" name since so many songs that I like from the 60s include my name!

    ~Mary

  • Mary Mary Why Ya Buggn?

  • i love the monkees especially davy!

  • Mike Nesmith wrote this song but its Glen Campbell doing the lead guitar on this version.

  • Mikey is so Cute

  • Peter always is having fun while playing music!! :)

  • Mary Mary,,,

  • the monkees are the best

  • Mike would make a good caveman on Geico commercials.

  • where was mike then?

  • Shame these guys have been denied the true amount of respect they deserve.

  • Gosharoony!!! I adore this song :)

  • Happy Birthday Micky!!! 3-8-2010

  • The Monkees were pissed at the producers-for not letting them play their own Instruments..the producers were pissed when they found out the monkees could actually play.

  • rly? i heard that two of them couldnt play instruments.

  • Hehe ...wow, I didn't know that.

Twangy pop music,. with happy chaos.

  • Yes this pissed Nesmith off more than anyone and he eventully quit over these reasons as he insisted that the band write their own songs and play on the records.

  • i've never seen Monkees before, only listened to their songs. funny, but i imagined the lead singer to look differently

  • Monkees still rawk. :)

  • stalker song

  • haha! mike looks totally pissed- giving a look that says 'fuck you, dont ever point that camera towards me you piece of shit conspiritor" !! good for him ! haha

  • I agree - you can't blame him!

  • Check out Davy between 0:27 and 0:30, he's really busting out on the maracas.

  • LOL!

  • @hotroute omgg.. too f'n funny!...lol

  • I love that he tries to make sure he's "in step" and that serious expression he wears - sweet tune altogether.

  • Hendrix wanted to tour with the Monkees and be dropped from it - great publicity ("Hendrix kicked off Monkees tour for being too badass")

  • Michael looks pretty pissed off in the video. He wrote the song but wasn't allowed to play guitar when it was recorded

  • John said they were doing the Marx bros. not them. :) Even as they stole every nuance of the movies.

  • Quiz Masters, this one's for you.

    Multiple choice.

    Spot the odd one out.

List a bunch of songs where the drummer was the singer. And then one that's not.

Call on stuff such as this, The Carpenters, The Romantics, Genesis, etc.

Considering this will keep some for a moment, and me for this.

If anyone is looking for a constructor of questions for a quiz show, that is one of the gaps in my life that obviously needs some fulfilment.

  • Don`t forget The Eagles and Grand Funk

  • duh

  • Davy obsessively shaking his maracas is so funny ;D Looks like he's about to hit Pete's head with it ;P Great vid, not 100% complete but that's okay...

  • Yeah....and why does he need six maracas?

  • Check out Run DMC's cover. Very didactic.

  • jonus brothers are a rip off by the big Disney cooperation to make parents think that the TV is a safe babysitter.

  • @darthspeaks big truth. yes.

  • @darthspeaks couldn't agree more.

  • @darthspeaks Wonder will the J Bros. sound as good as the Monkees 40 or 50 years from now? I think not. The Monkees are timeless!

  • y'know, it's a little known fact, but Davy was from England. true story.

  • Uhhh... no offense, but who didn't know Davy was from England. The most obvious being the accent. The Monkees are a legend, anyone who knows music knows Davy is from England. It's a VERY well-known fact.

  • @oldiesmusiconline Correct ....Kinda like saying Mad Max is from Australia... (Duh)...

  • i was being funny. people were writing about how it's a little known fact that Hendrix opened for the Monkees, so I thought I'd contribute my own little known fact. So yes, it is exactly like saying Mad Max is from Australia. And yes, duh. Everything okay now? Fuck you, too, you obtuse assholes.

  • The jonus brothers rip off the Monkee's show for Disney. Watch it if you don't believe.

  • sad part its soo true

  • Everything ripped-off the Monkees!

Ever seen a show from England called The Goodies, at least that was well made!

  • I loved the Goodies! Haven't seen them in 25 years, but I still love them.

  • Actrually it's a well known fact.

  • It's a little known fact that Mike Nesmith's mom set him up financially for years after his Monkeys t.v. career. She's the inventor of Liquid Paper (White Out).

  • that story is monty python, or young ones. But you obviously know your facts, so wow, i'm surprised

  • True, they had to change the recipe eventually because late in his career, he kept snorting it all.

  • Mike Nesmith is delicious

  • @JoeyMaggieAnd I loved Peter. This was my favorite show when I was a kid, :-)

  • @JoeyMaggieAnd

he was my fave..love love Mike Nesmith!!

  • @JoeyMaggieAnd Peter Tork is yummy, too!

  • The lead singer looks kind of like Jay Leno...

  • Love the Monkees. Love the Run DMC version, too.

But the lyrics remind me so much of Mental as Anything's "If you leave me, can I come, too?"

  • what's with the hat?????

  • Mike's hat is awesome. He's my second favorite, after Mickey. *squeemike'shat!!!*

  • I was about to agree with this... and then realized that it was me who had posted it. Wait, I didn't do it a week ago. Whatchootalkinbout?

  • Peter is so cute in this vid! I love the way he plays the Bass. *sigh* I think Peter was the best, besides Mike.

  • Peter Tork was the only one busted for drugs...mary-jane

  • Maybe so, but mickey looks off his face here.

  • I'm with you Doc. Tork was absolutely the worst pantomimer of all time, which was all the more puzzling because the guy was a musician, a lightweight true, but a musician nonetheless.

It's amazing how phoney his lip-synched performances are. He's almost as bad as Danny Bonaduce's pathetic bass pantomiming on Partridge Family!

  • I don't disagree. Peter even looks like a freak pantomiming at the piano (look at "Randy Scouse Git."). My point to Doc was simply that Peter's odd pantomimimg antics weren't because he didn't know how to play the instrument.

  • Point taken. As a guitar player myself , I simply cannot fathom how someone who can play the instrument can be so bad at faking it. I had mentioned Bondaduce before but at least the guy had an excuse: he had no musical ability. What's Tork's excuse? I guess this will be one of those unsolvable mysteries of the universe like where the sock disappears to in the drier...

  • LOL...

  • Was this the Wrecking Crew on this.?

  • Tork doesn't even know how to pretend to play the bass

  • Actually, Peter is in fact a "real" bass player; he used to jam with Hendrix, Stephen Stills, and Clapton. He and Mike were the 2 "true" musicians when the Monkees originated. Peter is also accomplished on guitar, banjo, and piano.

  • you might want to explain that to him, considering 1) His pantomime on the bass is all wrong 2) He himself stated that Nesmith or Jones should have been the bass player and 3) Part of the reason they liked to work with Chip Jones was so that Tork didn't need to play the bass anymore. By the way, an ape can jam with someone - actually playing well is entirely different. If Tork was so good, how come he never worked in the music industry after the monkees, save for his own solo stuff?

  • Oddly though, I've never heard of an ape jamming with Hendrix or Clapton - a sooty mangabey perhaps, but not an ape ;-) I'm just saying those guys didn't suffer fools; they wouldn't have played with Tork if he didn't have something to offer musically. I agree that Peter's ability to pantomime sucks, but it seems to extend beyond bass guitar (i.e. watch him pantomime on the piano; it's just as bad). I wonder if he was "directed" to act that way or if he just drank too much coffee prior to taping

  • I don't think the fact that he's 'jammed' with them means anything. It's not like it was recorded or released. Honestly, I like Tork, but his supposed musical skills never really panned out into anything tangible until the 90s.

Glad you agree that he looks like a dragoon when he pretends to play the bass. As for being directed to do so, Nesmith seems to be motivated to appear to be really playing, his solo in the video is pretty much what the solo really looks like.

  • Monkees rule -- 4eva!!! I love this song. Mike was (and is) a brilliant song writer!

  • I love the way mike handles his guitar

  • Yes, but even though Mike wrote this song, that's actually Glen Campbell playing on the recording.

  • What a shame to play marcas in every song...

    But it's quite a good song=)

  • I'm 50.

    I don't care who knows!

    The Monkees were greatly underated!

I used to play Monkees with my sister's.

I always had to be PETER! LOL!

Everyone wanted to be Mickey, Davey or Micheal, but NOT Peter. LOL!

Peter was pretty cool as well.

  • Cheer up! I heard Pete had a TON of groupies. :)

  • psh, mickey wins massive amounts of life.

    peter only wins 3. ;P

  • i met Davy, Mickey abd peter yrs ago at the memphis fair, they was so cool.

  • I've met all but Mike too. within maybe 7 years and I'm not even thirty. All cool guys, well all but one.

  • Michael was my favorite. I remember thinking how GROOVY he was with his FAR OUT blue beenie! God I miss that show.....

  • At Netflix you can order them. That's what we do. They were all so cute, even Mike. I love Peter's bell bottoms!

  • Typical American.

Take a pretty face (or 4).

    With a nice voice.

Then call in American best songwriters.

Then call in American best studio musicians.

Then call in the best Ad Men.

    Then get prime time TV.

And you have best selling product. Just like Elvis or Madonna or ...

And The Monkees sounds just as good.

    Great pop music!

  • yes but all four Monkees could actually sing.......

  • and write music, play instruments, they're all talented in more ways than a normal throw a band together way. That's why i loved the show. i dig their sound and the fact they were able to sing, play, and interchange was more appealing than say any lip synching you see on all these awards shows.

  • Michael Nesmith wrote this song:P

  • Elvis was great from the beginning... BEFORE the hype and the machine started rolling.

  • Shoot, the "machine" was invented BECAUSE of Elvis. As John Lennon said, "Before Elvis, there was nothing."

  • Shoot ! ; )

  • whos mikey again i lyk da 1 skakin dose shakaz he sooooooooooooooooooo hot

  • I had the album this was on, got mad at my sister, threw it at her and broke it! Grrr. I don't know why I was never attracted to Mickey....He sure was cute here...but he didn't age as well as Davy Jones and Davy was always my favorite.

  • I am so attached to Micky

  • True that! I'm a Mickey as well!

  • Mickey dolenz..here...HOT!

  • one of my favorite monkees tunes!! i really like this video, too. thanks for sharing, monkees forever!!!!!

  • They look nice in blue :) or is that purple... hell if I know.

  • LOl this song rules

  • lol..monkees kick ass great song.....would you believe this song is on a hip-hop roots mix cd.

  • Run Dmc did it first and more cleverly and the Roots did their version, I guess, YEARS later.

  • for your information the monkees could play their own instruments as they did on 3 of their album headquarters was the first one which they played all their own instruments because they snapped at teir record company i think and headquarters did outsell the beatles and the rolling stones combined te year it was released which they can all be proud of the 2 best bands in the world at the time

  • great breakbeat

  • love the drummer

  • OMG! Blast from the past!!! I love Mickie Dolanz (not sure if that is spelled right). I remember when I was little waiting for them to come on tv. I loved Peter too. He was so cute and shy but Micky was the funny one. Thanks for posting! Love it.

  • The Monkees are WAY better than the Beatles.

  • no way! the beatles are the best!

  • Yeah, but the Beatles were kind of annoying after a while. I mean, I liked the Beatles, but the Monkees are much easier to take. And the Beatles had John Lennon :P who was really stuck on himself.

  • I'm kinda' tied between the two. And, they were from two different decades, comparing them would be like comparing firday the 13TH part 1 to Jason X. Plus, the Monkees looked up to the Beetles a lot, so there's no point in a competition, and what do you mean "play their own instruments"? As if the monkees just sing over other peoples recordings?

  • yeah, they played neil diamond's songs

  • Whose mum invented correction fluid?

Please describe him from this clip.

  • Michael Nesmith's mom invented Liquid Paper... he's the one in the hat

  • The guitar-player with the hat.

  • Michael rules!!!

  • You got that right! =D

  • at least they did something productive, instead of sitting on the net making lame jokes

  • great tune!

  • they say "going to" weird xD

  • this is a great stalker song. "It's not over, where you go I will follow".. Try singing this in just a whisper. spooky!

  • hey i saw those shirts down in memphis about 2 years ago.funny thing is they matched tose grey pants with the belt buckles that hooks on their side.

  • u better work them maracas, Davy!

  • Mike and Pete rocked music-wise; and Davy- man, those maracas are an inspiration! how many can the guy hold...

  • why ya buggin!!!

  • ty for sharing

  • Mary's going to see Paul Butterfield's version, got it?

  • I think I saw where Peter is quite ill at the moment. :(

  • Hey Mary, don't leave, come back:)

  • Why aren't there very many Monkees videos on youtube?? It's lame. I mean I'm only 20 but I love their music. I like 'I'm gonna buy me a dog' hah. Good stuff.

  • I always thought Davy was the hottest but looking back at videos etc. I've changed my mind! Mike definietly Mike.

  • i would pay so much to see these guys. stupid mike is the reason why they all cant tour

  • actually peter quit first seen the monkees biography channel peter said he quit first then mike

  • 1:20 - 1:24

    Peter looks adorable.

  • Mike's hat is blue

  • I always thought Micky was sooo hot!

  • I really like the blue Monkees shirts they're wearing. Does anyboby know where I might purchase a look alike shirt, either the blue or yellow?

  • This is my absolute favorite Monkees song. I love fact that Mike wrote it and Mickys' vocals are great. Go guys :-)!!!

  • Peter was freakin HOT. Look at those dimples. YUM!

  • I AGREE!

  • Oh yeah! I could just hug him all day long and night if he wanted. :-)

  • Yeah...he is quite delicious....

  • Yep, he sure was!!! Those dimples and that smile melted me ( and still do) everytime. I was around 8 when I first saw them in Sat. morning reruns and have had a huge crush on him to this day. I also agree YUM!!!!

  • Man, what I wouldn't give to be that microphone that Peter and Davy sing into!! <3 I wouldnt kick any of The Monkees outta' my bed for farting!!

  • I'd like to "get down" on Peter!! **hehehehe**

  • *laughs*

  • The wool cap just added to his sexual magnetism!

  • Almost forgot how good the original was, after watching Run DMC's song by the same name!

  • Mike was always my favorite too.
