I've seen one or two people in metal who actually used an 8 string in an interesting way, by using them to sweep pick across really big intervals. But this is the real use of 8 strings.

First, I do not consider "sweep pick across really big intervals" ANYTHING interesting...maybe 15 year old testosterone addicts can't get enough of it...but that doesn't make it interesting to an adult.

Jody Foster can use pinched harmonics to go 2 and 3 octaves up from the 6 strings that were already there....at the same pace as most metal shredders.

I admit I do like shredders in certain songs...but a lot of them are mindless bags of shit who own an instrument...not musicians.

I totaly agree, most shredders are mindless showoffs, but if you find the ones with enough taste and knowledge to actually do it well it's pure gold.

Just sweep picking and using the two extra strings to get a bigger intervall is just boring, but I've heard people using an 8-string to create really interesting chord progressions and modulations while sweep picking.

The song is "Jesus Make Up My Dying Bed" which is a traditional song first recorded by Blind Willie Johnson. Led Zeppelin...as they often did, took credit for traditional american songs that they did not write.
