  • Hmm well I watched a whole video about why the slide should go on the middle finger. It's by scott grove Groovymusic

  • The slide goes on ur middle finger...

  • @ddayxable It goes wherever you want to put it. Johnny Winter wears his on the pinky. Most do because you can still use your others to finger lead notes.

  • National lace pickup used through a sansamp tri-ac and a fender twin

  • would really like to know wich pickup is he using!

  • Comment removed

  • wondering what pick-up is installed?

  • Superb playing, great tone. Not too keen on the voice but its good music so it doesnt matter that much.

  • Grosooo good slide men !!

  • Hi. For this song, I used (low to high)

AEAEAC# e/e. The tunings listed below are all awesome for this guitar particularly adadgad... This song and a few other 8 string resonator songs are up at cdbaby.com ... Search "James Michael Thompson"

    Cheers

    James

  • How would you tune that thing?

  • @roamingrino Low to High AEADGB(then double E's on the highest). Or AEAEDGBE or ADADGAD or BEADGBE or anything else you could think of.

  • @roamingrino I'd tune it like Meshuggah...

  • This guy is amazing. He can make that resonator talk!

  • oh, well, well, great performance! :D

  • BIG YES

  • Comment removed

  • just topes. tall man you got to heare it

  • i don't think playing metal on a resonator would work well

  • I guess you never heard Elmore James! He is as close to metal as you can get without spandex!!!

  • that's kool someone playing an 8 string and NOT playing metal riffs I was beginning to think it was non-existent

  • @SK3Nives charlie hunter

  • one of the coolest guitar sounds ever! Great playing and composition too! Simply amazing :-D

  • I love this video! Thanks for sharing. Willa

  • Sound good but ...

I prefer the original for sure :

Blind Willie Johnson - Jesus Make Up My Dying Bed

Put your ears on it ... And juge by yourself !!

    Vive le Blues !!!!!!!

  • Close your eyes and try to picture Tay Zonday singing this.

  • I heard Tay Zonday, he has a awesome voice, but all the songs that he is singing are really so so shity ( chocolate rain haha, it sounds like diarrhea )

thank you James Michael Thompson for this song !!!!!! you're a great player

  • Incredible guitarplaying and composer but... voice is horrible....

  • had me RIGHT up until he started singing.....yuk! his attempt at that register makes my ears want to curl up into themselves....HIRE A SINGER you rock so hard in everything else...why do you HAVE to try to sing too?>

  • This, boys and girls, is how you use an 8-string guitar.

  • right.....because Charlie Hunter isn't as good .....NOT!!!!!

  • No need to feel offended, I wasn't dissing Charlie Hunter. Actually, if I was dissing anything at all it was all those metal bands with 8-string guitars who only use them to chug out really low power chords.

  • LOL!>.....I TOTALLY missed your point.....

it's amazing. I am SO offended by Ibanez's 8 string and all the Korn clones out there investing years in 8 finger tapping muscle memory that I just stopped acknowledging them anymore.......

I miss Sandman.....I miss Morphine.....ah the beautiful magic of slide on a Bass Guitar with a Bariton Sax nearby.

  • I've seen one or two people in metal who actually used an 8 string in an interesting way, by using them to sweep pick across really big intervals. But this is the real use of 8 strings.

  • First, I do not consider "sweep pick across really big intervals" ANYTHING interesting...maybe 15 year old testosterone addicts can't get enough of it...but that doesn't make it interesting to an adult.

Jody Foster can use pinched harmonics to go 2 and 3 octaves up from the 6 strings that were already there....at the same pace as most metal shredders.

I admit I do like shredders in certain songs...but a lot of them are mindless bags of shit who own an instrument...not musicians.

  • I totaly agree, most shredders are mindless showoffs, but if you find the ones with enough taste and knowledge to actually do it well it's pure gold.

Just sweep picking and using the two extra strings to get a bigger intervall is just boring, but I've heard people using an 8-string to create really interesting chord progressions and modulations while sweep picking.

  • You know....i find your enthusiasm intriguing.....pass me a link for that....I'd like to hear something new.

  • sadly, I've only seen a couple of people doing it live, haven't found any recordings of it online yet, I will get back to you if I can find it though.

  • Morphine is one of my favorite bands, but I really like this video as well.

  • love his vocal style im deciding that guitar or keep my house deposit ther that dear

  • Great, great player and a good bloke too.

  • I want this guitar too though God knows what I'd do with it...Not make it sound like this,I fear.Stunning stuff.

  • i want that axe!!!!!

  • lol @ the comment posted by Heat3YT. im glad to see im not the only one who knew blind willie johnson recorded it first. i've even got the recording on my computer.

this man did willie proud. didnt over effect it (zeppelin) and didnt hotdog it, just played it. nice.

  • wooo yeh ^^

  • bravo

  • I'd love to see this guy live.

    Who is he???

  • It is Tompo, he is from Perth, Western Australia. I have seen him live in Freemantle W.A. and he is a class act!!

  • That's awesome. That's a Zeppelin tune he's playing.

  • The song is "Jesus Make Up My Dying Bed" which is a traditional song first recorded by Blind Willie Johnson. Led Zeppelin...as they often did, took credit for traditional american songs that they did not write.
