Just ordered a Reference snare,14x6.5. I'm so excited! The Pearl Reference snare is the most beautiful, well-rounded, full-sounding snare I've ever heard, and after more than a decade of playing drums, I'm thrilled to be receiving such a true piece of perfection! Does anyone have any tips on tuning the snare for a rock sound with a nice, loud crack for rimshots? I'm thinking about getting an Aquarian triple threat head. Any help would be *much* appreciated. Purple craze! Ah! So excited! :D
exelent drums, but this is for the ones who can afford it ): for the ones in the studio this is a perfect kit, but also needs some pro ending mics, so thats a trillilion of dollars ): i have a pearl vision vsx and its reaaaally good, the magic to make good drum sound its some good heads and good tuning, use a drum dial, its sure a good thing to have
Nice science. I believe the science - you only have to have roto-toms to know that every skins behaves differently, so each shell will too. However, drum science won't stop here. Pearl need to include the SLEISHMAN technology to take drums even further. The classical guitar sort of stagnated in its construction for decade but has recently been transformed by thinkers. Nice job Pearl!
The Reference drums are hands down one of the top drum kits ever made. My only problem with them is the price. When you look at price listing on say guitar centers website you can find a five piece Tama Bubinga kit for $2800. The same size reference kit is listed at $3800. I have played both kits, and I would give the Reference a 10 out of 10, but I would give the Starclassic kit a 9.5 out of 10. The extra $1000 for a kit that is hardly better just isnt worth it. Reference is over priced.
all 3 of the drummers are amazing, some of the best ever. these are the greatest sounding but i just had a question. which of the reference snares is Omar Hakim using in this video?
@TheDudeWithTheDrums The Reference Series toms include OptiMounts, MasterCast Die-Cast Hoops, & Clear Remo Emperor Heads on the toms, Clear Powerstroke 3 on the BD, and a coated "window" head on the snare.
Sorry about leaving the comment multiple times they do not show up for some reason. One more question though. Is there a Discontinuation date set sometime soon? Or will the series be around a few more years
does anybody know the sticking Dennis Chambers uses when hes doin that crazy thing between the snare-toms-cymbals? is it just singles real fast or some other rudiment combo?????????
How much will it be to get a 10 inch 1st Tom, 12 inch second tom, 14 inch snare and a 16 inch floor tom pearl reference? I also want the toms that clamp onto the cymbal stands, rather than the ones that join onto the kick drum. Anyone know how much all this will be?
@pearldrumcorp. Not sure if the last comment went through but I looked everywhere for a 9 piece reference series with black hardware and a black finish and I couldn't find one. Is all black an option for a 9 piece?
@Brucifer6sixsicks Sounds like you're looking for a Reference Series kit in #103 Piano Black or #122 Black Mist with black hardware. You can special order the kit from any Authorized Pearl Dealer... look in the Dealer section of our main website pearldrum (dot)com
@PearlDrumCorp Why did you compress the snare? You didn't need to these drums sound amazing just through a clean mike! I wish I could afford one of these kits... OR a masterworks those too are incredible. Keep it up! I love my Pearl Kit!
Just played a set of these and these are the best sounding drums I've ever played. I can't justify the price difference between these and my PDP MX kit, but if I had an extra four grand laying around, I'd get them.
Sorry, Pearl, but is the vbx series 100% birch on every single vbx kit or just some and others are birch/basswood. Also is the vision vbx an intermidiate drum kit and is birch a "professional wood" meaning is it a quality wood that will give you a professional sound and the quality of one. Please respond
@drummerboy2595 The VBX Vision Series is a 100% birch shell and the VSX and VX are a combination shell. As the VBX are 6-ply 7.5mm on the toms & 14x14 floor toms and 8-ply 10mm on the 16x16, 18x16, & bass drums... you'll have no problem with tone, projection, and look of the lacquer finish.
If you are a decent player.. you can play any kit ...but ....a great skinned and sounding kit bring the player out in you ..for sure!
I am giving Pearl their new Catchphrase -
" Pearl Drum s - Brings the player out!" "Pearl Drums - Just add PLayer " , "Pearl Drums - Find the Player within !" , Pearl Drums - Release the inner drummer" , Pearl Drums - WE made the KIT ..You bring the HIT!"
I've got a reference twilight fade! bought it almost two years ago by Morgan Ågren. He had to sell his drums cause his spons, Svensk Musik AB changed from Pearl to DW. He didn't want to sell the drums to me, but had to. But I'm happy cause I've got the best kit in the world!!
how much would it cost to get 20x18 bass drum,10x7 rack tom.12x7 rack tom,14x12 floor tom,16x12 floor tom, and a 13x6 snare,in all black but vision series all maple shells.
for tom and kick sound, pearl reference all the way, but personally i cant stand the snare, its hard to get rid of the ring of the snare by muffling it, without losing the "character" of the drum, personally i eould buy the reference kit, and get a new snare like a metal snare, specifically carbon.
I would say take the Pearl Reference. I sadly don't own one, but my teacher does and they are AWESOME. I am allways so happy when I get a chance to play on them and sound is amasing.
wow. never seen or heard these in person. only seen them in catalogs. these sound amazing here on youtube. i cant imagine what they sound like in person...
I thought he was trying to swat a fly. Mr Miyagi would be proud. I am a huge Dave Garibaldi fan but onesogreat77 is right - DC is the Jordan of drums.
What is the point of all these promo videos? Masterworks, Reference, Yamaha PHX.... whatever. In these vids they're all going through mic's!!! Wanna hear how they all really sound? Someone do a video of all these different types of drums, in the middle of a field, with old Remo pre-tuned heads (to address the tuning inconsistencies), mic'd DRY. My dream is that someone would do this. Gretsch, Sonor, and these newer hype kits. Maybe 1 of 10 drummers could pick maple vs. birch in a blindfold test.
LOL i love how morgan just sits there bein all like.. yeah... this is the best..... EVER... BY FAR... and then Dennis and Omar break it down and tell us why haha... oh god i cant wait to have my reference
if ur talking about heads for a reference kit...ideally you would get different heads for each drum...depending on the blend of the different woods. for example...single or double ply heads...also coated or not
evans has a new head that is specially designed for each drum by adding thickness etc. i forget what their called but i remember reading about'em in my musiciansfriend magazine
if anyone knows how to pair heads with this drums, how to tune them, and how to muffle the bass drum exactly how it was done in this video, please post a response!
I just recently bought a reference set and they ain't kiddin. This really is the greaetest quality drummset in the world. listen to how much pop is in that snare!!!! It's soooo amazing!!!!
nothings better than the references. i'm getting some in twilight fade with black hardware. i'm going to chuck levins tomorrow to find out the price =D
no, eq tweaking can take away some of the high end and overtone but the fundamental tone of the drum is there. Go to your nearest drumshop and try the reference, the drums will absolutely hug you. It is as good or better than DW.
True that man. Personal opinion is what matters. I have Tama Starclassic Performer Birch and I love them soooo much. But, DW Collector Series are amazing, DW Exotics, Gretsch USA Customs, all those. Complete personal opinion.
pearl reference series drums are awesome, i think that using different woods with different thicknesses depending on the size of the drum to get the perfect tonal characteristic is genius
its all in your ear. i personally like a clear pinstripe on my kick because i am old school and like more midrange and attack vs. punch and depth. However, I recommend the P3 because so many drummer swear by it. I personally think the Force I is Aquarian's best kick head.
well, really the best drums would be the Pearl Masterworks, because you can get whatever you like. mahogany shell, birch, maple, composite (mix and match), or carbon fibre mixed with maple. you decide the shell thickness yourself, the bearing edges, the hardware design. when it comes to the finish, you can choose between 47 in-stock finishes, or send in a photograph that you want as a finish. and of course the hardware colour is custom. (black, gold, satin, chrome)
My Masters kit sounds perfect with Evans coated EC2's.....they still have great sustain, but without the annoying overtones. My buddy swears by 'em on his Reference kit too.
Im nt man! I don't think Pearl sucks! They're like 1 of the fuckin best, I jus like DW's sound more. But u gotta agree that DW's 9000 series hardware is betr than Pearl's 2000's
i think that hes playing a single paradiddle.the accent at the cymbal and the other strokes on the snare drum.
Cymbal R Snare:lrr Cymbal:LSnare:rll.whe you did it faster you get the sound like dennis!i tried and its true!but remember!you need a lot of practice!i hope i could help you! peace
well thats a single material. technically, these drums are more advanced, and will sound way better, but hey those are nice drums, i got a buddy who has those.
yamaha sucks ass....i just tried to tune a 1000 dollar yamaha set..and when tuning the head tenion i was tuning it at 77 on the drumdial tunr...and it was impossible because some of them would be too tight..and some of them would come out of the screw holes..before even getting to 77...pieces of shit
i..am a real drummer...and as a matter of fact the kit i tuned was a stage custom..and its a piece of shit haha...its like from 98 so its pretty old too..but really every single drummer i know says just to buy pearl they last and tey sound really good.and i can tune drums by ears just to time consuming much faster to do it on the tension of the drum head
lol i'm not sure how old mine is but i got it for free, so i can't complain =D some of my lugs get kinda stuck, but i think they just need to be oiled. when i get a new drum set, i'm probably looking at a tama or gretsch.
oh very true very true....ya i love tama and gretsch...gretsch has the beast look ever very classic..not for hard hitters though but it has a good sound if you like classical..or jazz music..my cousin has the gretsch maple catalina or something like that it looks gnarly and sounds pretty good with sabian cymbals..what kind of cymbals do you have with your yamaha?
i have sabian hats, generic crash, sabian rock crash, used to have zildjian k splash, but i destroyed it... the bell is completely gone. sabian aaxtreme china (my favorite out of all of them) and a sabian Manhattan ride. so yeah mostly sabian xD i'm planning on getting an ozone splash, they sound nuts!
with correct tuning, any mixed wood set would sound better than any single wood set...fact. The Yamaha Absolute series does sound amazing, definitely up there with the reference series and some DW kits.
DW and pearl are both great companies. However, the Reference kit is amazing because it combines different woods to create a unqiue and superior tone. DW just has maple or birch shells.
I bought this kit and spent way to much money on it, great drumset, dont get me wrong, but I wish i had just bought three different kits instead and spent more money on different cymbals and snares.
Rather you play Dw, Ddrum, Tama, Mapex, or Pearl, every drummer knows that the Pearl Reference kit sounds azaming and is probley the best kit out their now
Yeah, probably. I mean some of DW's North American Maple kits have a wider tuning range, and more versatility in terms of usage over different genres, but that is pretty much true, unless you're looking into customization, in which case Pearl MWs are the best... hahahaha...

Man listen to how CLEAR those drums sound. That's my next set!!!!
flamwork06 2 years ago
True that man. Personal opinion is what matters. I have Tama Starclassic Performer Birch and I love them soooo much. But, DW Collector Series are amazing, DW Exotics, Gretsch USA Customs, all those. Complete personal opinion.

pearl reference series drums are awesome, i think that using different woods with different thicknesses depending on the size of the drum to get the perfect tonal characteristic is genius
ilovemusicsomuch19 2 years ago
I'm guessing it's a Pearl snare.

emp over ambas for toms coated ps3 for basses then empx over ambas med snare side on snares
MetalDrumer106 2 years ago
its all in your ear. i personally like a clear pinstripe on my kick because i am old school and like more midrange and attack vs. punch and depth. However, I recommend the P3 because so many drummer swear by it. I personally think the Force I is Aquarian's best kick head.
quackbeef 2 years ago
Kick: Remo Powerstroke 3 or Evans EQ4, Snare Top: Evans Genera Dry or Remo Coated Controlled Sound Toms: Remo Pinstripes or Evans EC2

i got a question what are the best drums in the world is it the refrence series or the masterworks plz message me plz
SomeoneWitSkill 2 years ago
well, really the best drums would be the Pearl Masterworks, because you can get whatever you like. mahogany shell, birch, maple, composite (mix and match), or carbon fibre mixed with maple. you decide the shell thickness yourself, the bearing edges, the hardware design. when it comes to the finish, you can choose between 47 in-stock finishes, or send in a photograph that you want as a finish. and of course the hardware colour is custom. (black, gold, satin, chrome)

My Masters kit sounds perfect with Evans coated EC2's.....they still have great sustain, but without the annoying overtones. My buddy swears by 'em on his Reference kit too.
sam42073 2 years ago
i have these drums they are so nice sound great too
i got mine with the rootbeer finish
flip95flop 2 years ago
i have rotbeer too!
lentoviolentomann 2 years ago
Try powerstroke 3 coateds bro, or if you want even more focus, PS4 coateds. I swear by either for my reference.
Gizzacks 2 years ago
Im nt man! I don't think Pearl sucks! They're like 1 of the fuckin best, I jus like DW's sound more. But u gotta agree that DW's 9000 series hardware is betr than Pearl's 2000's

I still think yamaha absolute series are best sounding drums in the world.....
jts024 3 years ago
well thats a single material. technically, these drums are more advanced, and will sound way better, but hey those are nice drums, i got a buddy who has those.
apujols2194 3 years ago
yamaha sucks ass....i just tried to tune a 1000 dollar yamaha set..and when tuning the head tenion i was tuning it at 77 on the drumdial tunr...and it was impossible because some of them would be too tight..and some of them would come out of the screw holes..before even getting to 77...pieces of shit
slipknot555133 3 years ago
reeeeaaal drummers tune drums by ear... i have an older yamaha stage custom and it sounds great. and i hand tuned ALL of my toms to perfection.
MindwessWetad 3 years ago
i..am a real drummer...and as a matter of fact the kit i tuned was a stage custom..and its a piece of shit haha...its like from 98 so its pretty old too..but really every single drummer i know says just to buy pearl they last and tey sound really good.and i can tune drums by ears just to time consuming much faster to do it on the tension of the drum head
slipknot555133 3 years ago
lol i'm not sure how old mine is but i got it for free, so i can't complain =D some of my lugs get kinda stuck, but i think they just need to be oiled. when i get a new drum set, i'm probably looking at a tama or gretsch.
MindwessWetad 3 years ago
or pearl too huh
apujols2194 3 years ago
oh very true very true....ya i love tama and gretsch...gretsch has the beast look ever very classic..not for hard hitters though but it has a good sound if you like classical..or jazz music..my cousin has the gretsch maple catalina or something like that it looks gnarly and sounds pretty good with sabian cymbals..what kind of cymbals do you have with your yamaha?
slipknot555133 3 years ago
i have sabian hats, generic crash, sabian rock crash, used to have zildjian k splash, but i destroyed it... the bell is completely gone. sabian aaxtreme china (my favorite out of all of them) and a sabian Manhattan ride. so yeah mostly sabian xD i'm planning on getting an ozone splash, they sound nuts!
MindwessWetad 3 years ago
with correct tuning, any mixed wood set would sound better than any single wood set...fact. The Yamaha Absolute series does sound amazing, definitely up there with the reference series and some DW kits.
apujols2194 3 years ago
Yeah, I gotta agree wid the DW's. They're not bad, infact the new VLT & X-Shells are amazing. Great if your into metal and stuff
slickvick456 3 years ago
DW and pearl are both great companies. However, the Reference kit is amazing because it combines different woods to create a unqiue and superior tone. DW just has maple or birch shells.
quackbeef 3 years ago
I bought this kit and spent way to much money on it, great drumset, dont get me wrong, but I wish i had just bought three different kits instead and spent more money on different cymbals and snares.
jonbonzep 3 years ago
when dennis chambers does his solos in this vid, what is he doing on the snare? double stroke? or single? or what?
apujols2194 3 years ago
well they added so many for for 2008, before there was only 5 or 6, now theres like 20
JoshTheDrummer69 3 years ago
dont wanna sound gay, but yeah theres actually 26 finishes
apujols2194 3 years ago
You just had to say that didn't you :P
JoshTheDrummer69 3 years ago

apujols2194 3 years ago

Me too!!

And the tama hyper drive has nothing on this series
pedals8 3 years ago
Rather you play Dw, Ddrum, Tama, Mapex, or Pearl, every drummer knows that the Pearl Reference kit sounds azaming and is probley the best kit out their now
pedals8 3 years ago
Yeah, probably. I mean some of DW's North American Maple kits have a wider tuning range, and more versatility in terms of usage over different genres, but that is pretty much true, unless you're looking into customization, in which case Pearl MWs are the best... hahahaha...
concete4451 3 years ago
Check out the Sonor Lite and SQ2 kits, and the Yamaha PHX. Those are the only three kits I like better than the Pearl Reference and Masterworks kits.

Does the price of the drum go down respectively when they start blending cheaper woods? Birch and Mahogany are generally cheaper than Maple.
Oneness100 3 years ago
mahogany is generally the most exspensive...well it actually depnds on plys and shit
