  • Bentonia tuning?

  • @shoutingthomas Yes, except I am tuned lower to the key of C than the common key of D. Thank you for your question. Enjoy.

  • I love this, I must have listened to it 10 times at least. You've got to put this one on your next album.

  • @anavarre Thank you for your comment. This song was an experiment in arranging a song of the Depression area and trying to use the slide to simulate the clarinet. I would love to get into the studio and record another CD, but currently it is just a matter of having enough funds. Enjoy

  • Well done, sir. An old song that, unfortunately, is finding quite a bit of resonance these days in the US. >.<

  • @CrispyDruid Thank you for your comment. Yes, unfortunately you are correct. If we don't learn from history, we are destined to repeat it. Hopefully, better days are on the way. Maybe I should cover, Happy Days Are Here Again. LOL Enjoy.

  • I love this song! Do you have the tabs for this?

  • @Tuneswiththomas Thank you for your interest and comment. I'm sorry, but I don't. I hope someday to have the time to tab out my arrangements, but there is only some much time in a day. Enjoy.

  • Love the minor sound.Another great job.

  • @SPRUTH1154 Thank you for your comment. It is quite amazing that one little note moved a half step down can have such a dramatic effect. Enjoy.

  • Brilliant Keni just brilliant

  • Thank you. Sadly, still quite relevant today. Seventy years later! Enjoy.

  • go that real lowdown and down and out sound Keni

    Cooooooooooooooooooool

    keep up the good work

Cd and dvd arrived today many thanks

  • @1958wvpicker Thank you for your comment and purchase. Enjoy.

  • vocal is not as good as guitar

  • Thank you for your comment. Yes I agree, but my vocals have improved greatly since I recorded this song. I am a work in progress. Constantly trying to learn more and improve. Enjoy.

  • Then do another one! A revised one! :)

  • Thank you for your encouragement. I rarely perform this song. Many times I work on new songs just for the fun of exploring. They don't all make it into my set list. Here on youtube are both earlier posting and newer postings. I am not too concerned about viewers seeing my lesser performances. It is all about learning and improving. Although I perform publically, my real intention is to share the fun and enjoyment of playing this style with other interested players. Enjoy.

  • I gotta tell ya Brother, it's pretty heartfelt nowadays. Thank you so much, it means a lot to me.

  • Thank you. If you don't learn from the past, you are doomed to repeat it. Same story, different day...Greed. You don't appreciate it, until it is gone.

Maybe we will wake up some day...

  • similar to black sabbath's into the void

  • Thank you for your comment. I will have to check it out. Happy Holidays. Best of health and Wealth in 2010. Enjoy.

  • sweet trying to learn this delta style think now.

  • Thank you. If you are interested in learning this style, please check out my instructional video CDs that are available on ebay. Search: Keni Lee

    Very reasonablely priced!

Feel free to write if you have any questions. Enjoy.

  • very moving..thanks

  • Thank you. This song is certainly appropriate now for our modern times. Enjoy.

  • hhmmm.. i cant get this song out of my head now. Im amazed how the minor tuning sounds.

Thank you for introducing me to a new sound that has me really intriuged.

  • Thank you. Check out this video. jack owens/hard times (1981) He is another player like Skip James who played many songs in minor tuning. Yes, the tuning is very dark and mysterious. Enjoy.

  • Nice Guitar sound.

  • Thank you.

  • Man, your version of this song sent chills down my back.

  • Thank you. Unfortunately, it is a tune too close to our current reality. Open Vestapol minor tuning is rather spooky. I'm in C, CGCd#gc. The third string is tuned down from a major 3rd to a minor 3rd. Listen to Skip James. He played many songs in minor tuning. Enjoy.

  • very nicely played, great sound.

those resonators weigh a tonne eh?

what kind of slide are you using? it looks like glass but it seems too straight to be a bottleneck

  • Thank you. Ya, they can get heavy after a while. That is why holding them in the classical guitar method works best. It is a very thick glass Italian wine bottle. Just drink a lot of wine and eventually you will find a real good bottle. Unfortunately, good bottle for slide does not always equal good wine. lol. Happy Holidays! Enjoy.

  • Beautiful and, sadly, a timely song again.

  • Thank you. Yes, as relevant as ever! Regardless, Happy Holidays. Better days are on the way. Enjoy.

  • I never heard this song before. I just listened to nearly every other version of it on YouTube. None of them had the impact of your version. 10 stars

  • Thank you. I enjoyed arranging this song. I wanted to play the main melody line like a clarinet player. This song is in minor tuning, that is what gives it that "Great Depression" sound. Hope those days are not comin' again. Soup and bread lines don't sound like a hell of a lot of fun. That is what my Grandparents ate in the 1930s. He said it was a good day when you had stale bread to go with the pea soup.

  • Hey pal, can you tell me what note you've tuned each string in to for the minor sound? I love it

  • Thank you. Open C minor low to high CGCd#gc. Usually, if you look to the right of my videos, and click on more info, you will find the tuning information. If you are interested in exploring Bottleneck guitar deeper, please consider purchasing one of my instructional CDs that are available for sale on ebay. Search Keni Lee. Also, please feel free to write if you have any questions. Enjoy.

  • this is one of my favourite ever songs, i only know the bing crosby version, this version is amazing though

  • Thank you. After listening to the original depression versions, I created this arrangement attempting to play the clarinet melody line using the slide.

  • Kenileeburgess rules.

  • Thank you.

  • great again

  • Thank you.

  • another good job kb...peace...m_________

  • Thank you.

  • another great vid!

    congrats on the tv gig

  • Thank you.

  • nice footage bro, you're a great player. i'd rather go down to the subways than a concert anyday

  • Thank you. Too hot in those subways now, but come September I'll be back down there again.

  • oh i see. well i'll make sure to keep an eye(or ear i should say) out for you if i'm in the area.

  • Wow KeniLee, that was some good looking footage!

  • Thank you. Ya, a lot of performers turned out for the audition. I was fortunate to get some air time and my name on the screen. I got to put a shout out there, and thank whoever made that happen. Thank you!

  • KeniLeeBLUESgess...

  • That's awesome KeniLee! I love hearing my Dad's story bout the depression which he lived thru........Don't know that I have ever heard this song, and am delighted you shared.....will google up your half minute of fame:-) This one would be excellent set to pics of the era.....grapes of wrath written all over it...

    Laurieleec

  • Thank you. It really is a great period song. I posted some information about it on the right side of the video. Those where some tuff times. My grandparents lived off pea soup and stale bread

  • much love for kenilee

  • Thank you for the love.

  • Songs that tell it how it really is are always better than polished impoSTARS.Your a star to us Keni Lee Burgess

  • Thank you for the encouragement and the support.

  • My God Keni!!!!!!!!!!!!That was amazing 5*!!!!

I never heard this song before Who sings it and whats the title?

    Your friend

    EastCoast BluesFan

    Kevin

  • Thank you Kevin. If you look to the right of the video, I just added some information about the song. It is certainly one of those all time great songs.

  • yea,, just seen you on the NYC station, well done Kenilee you deserve some air time,,you're performing with some real talented people down there, no wonder its so hard for you to get a licence to play ,but i'd throw you a buck any time i see ya.

  • Thank you for your support. As times get harder I fear, more and more really talented performers will take my place to earn their living. It is a good thing for the Subway riders. The music quality goes up. You will get a lot more for your buck. During the MUNY, Music Under New York auditions, I was competing against professional orchestra musicians, who wanted the spot, so they could earn extra money in addition to their professional gig. These people are polished. Thank you for your comments.

  • Great sound.Great job.

  • Thank you.

  • Glad to see you get a little recognition, Keni Lee!

  • Thank you. It was a great experience. It is my first time on TV. It was a little strange watching the show, and then all of the sudden, there I am. There where many performers who came out to play that day, I was fortunate enough to get some air time.

  • That's an interesting competition. Wish I didn't live so far away and could visit the subway artists there. I still remember late one evening, with very few patrons around, a single violin solo echoing through the subway station. Very cool stuff!

I see Floyd Lee is still at it too. He'll probably be playing in the subway long after he's buried. LOL

  • Thank you. George, the Documentary Film Maker told me about. It was a long day just to audition for five minutes. I enjoy playing on the platforms, and making Youtube videos/lessons, but old Keni Lee just don't have the fire that is necessary to be a star. I'm pleased to get 30 seconds of air time and my name on the TV.

  • Outstanging. Beautiful chording Keni. What tuning because I would like to learn this. Thanks
