The 3 Tenors all had their best roles. Pavarotti was Calaf, Domingo was Othello, Carreras was probably the Duke. Not taking anything away from Domingo, dude's a pretty damn good Duke, but my favourite role of his is Othello.
I remember this production very well from the 70's. I was intrigued at the idea of Domingo singing the duke. Although he certainly does not have a classic lyrical tenor, I still find him very exciting to listen too. The only problem is that he tilts the balance of the opera a little too far in his direction. But it was thrilling to hear him do the cabaletta to Parmi veder le lagrime, which at the time was usually omitted...
Hey you have a fantastic voice! Beautiful.....and if you look hot as well so what??? I have big boobs too....at least you had Domingos arms around you, I wouldn't object to that even now when he's on his last legs!! LOL!!
Hi my name is Isola Jones and my only qualifications for playing Maddalena in about every Rigoletto production in the 80s is being a decently acceptable mezzo and having gargantuan boobs
I do agree that the Duke was a a role more suited to Pav, the same way Otello is a role more suited to Domingo. Agreed he does very well in his undertaking but I don't think it's a role that Domingo really liked. It wasn't his forte, plus he really disliked the character he could find no empathy with him at all!! I posted the clip just to show Domingo in a different role outside his comfort zone :-)))
Pavarotti's voice at his best was relatively lean, yet full and golden-toned. Domingo's at his was rich and lustrous. Pav had more facility in the high range, Placido more power. Bottom line: they were both great tenors. And thank God for giving us both in the same generation:) --
Many thanks. And I should have added that both their voices at their best -- and even second- and third-best -- were beautiful. Regarding this clip again, I do think Pav sang the Duke more effectively than Domingo at this stage in their respective careers. Even so, it's extraordinary that Domingo does this well after singing some 30 Otellos --
@stevevandien Pavarotti was a lot louder than Placido. Pavarotti could drown Domingo any time. Luciano didn't sing otello because his voice wasn't dark enough but it was far more powerfull than Domingo's voice. Pavarotti in 1985 Tosca in Wien totally drowned Ghena Dimitrova while domingo had trouble beeing heard over Renee Fleming. And Dimitrova's voice in comparisson to Fleming's voice is like an elephant to an ant. Ghena's voice was FAR LOUDER than Fleming's voice.
@ThePavafan You write like A CHILD. Aren't you interested in the ART at all? Or maybe you are just into who SINGS LOUDEST? Elephants and ants, whatever..
This is one of the finest live video recordings of Maestro Verdi's most divine quartet you are ever likely to hear.
Cotrubas and Domingo are quite peerless here at the ascent of their extraordinary careers singing roles perfectly suited to their vocal and artistic talents
Nope, this is at the met. I own this DVD. Not the best recording in my opion. This was 70s recording after all. I didn't like Ileana Cotrubas's Gilda, even though she is a great singer.
whats that at 2.27?? why did they cut the scene there??? is sounds really strange when you listen carefully to Gilda's nice legato and then suddenly its cut off. thats really sad!!!
i find this to be evidence that placi WASN'T EVER a baritone. this is one of the highest written roles that verdi composed for tenor! NOT only wouldn't pd be able to get thru this role but he also wouldn't be able to make such beautiful music. phrasing is so elegant and perfect for the character. many people who dont know about the voice blah blah all the time about him being a bari/tenor but really!! and what about singing edgardo in lucia at 19?? no pushed up baritone would even attempt it!
Yet again, "merci beaucoup", dear Ursey, for posting all those videos! Should you have further famous arias - there are so many in Rigoletto - that you would like to share with us all,by all means feel free to do so.Take care!
Com'è bello rivedere e riascoltare queste performances ormai quasi perdute. Grazie per il post.
