OMG-the best video ever for Bunnymen fans! That shot of Jake Brockman coupled with Pete De Freitas during the (musical) B section/breakdown is the best ever! XXX
Damn right theyre in a different league from the main stream New Ro bands. I really liked em back in the 80s never heard them live till now and....I mean...wow speechless. That band is sooo tight. Never missed a beat love em
Just saw them on Friday night and they were fantastic. Ian had a cig in his mouth the entire time-dont know how he does it. The guys all looked quite ragged. I wanted to bring them to my rehab. Oh well guess it comes with the territory
Personally, I think Echo is the best but hey that's just my opinion. The Smiths, Joy Division and the Cure are also my absolute favorites but I just enjoy listening to Echo & the Bunnymen more.

I saw the bunnymen twice in Liverpool (1983 and 1984) first time was great second time was shite. To suggest that they are some watershed band in rock history is absurd. They were of their time but have dated and now sound totally dreadful. Social clubs in England are full of bands as good as they every Saturday night.
In 1987 Echo, New Order and the Suger Cubes were on a single billing in Toronto. It was $40 so my friend and I decided to not see them at the old Exibition Stadium. We still talk about it today. One of the worst decisions of our lives. Terrible..... $40 was a lot then and we were in high school....ugh.
I was at this gig as well...came down from Uni in Yorskshire to watch it.... I just remember being amazed by the quality of De Freitas drumming... RIP Pete... The Bunnymen were by no means overawed... well, thats what youd expect with Mcullochs ego.... they did great versions of Back of Love and Never Stop.... Great memories... Ta!
I was THERE! A friend had bought the tickets, he was being shipped back to the states to be discharged from the USAF (busted for possession of drugs) and we went to this before he shipped out. I know they were trying to film this concert at RAH, but I'd not seen any footage. "Lay Down Thy Raincoat And Groove" was the name of the gig. Thank you!
Decent but not as good as Justin Bieber. I mean come on. Justin dances and he's like An American while these guys sound like dumb canadian poopheads. plus these canadians think they're a different cuntry when they akt just like us and stuff. plus their money is pink and yellow and other faggy colors like this dumb canooks hair.

Joy Division,The Smiths and The Cure were all great and important bands ,but the Bunnymen were on a different level musically, the rhythm section (Les and Pete) were like a metronome, and Mac/Will were great frontmen...Best Live band ever......
@kaney1967 Agree that Joy Division (And Gang of Four) changed things in 79/80 and I also agree that Marr was a great guitarist, but as a musical unit The Bunnymen were just miles ahead of everyone, apart from Television maybee.Check out the drumming on Over The Wall, loads of live videos on YouTube. Mike Joyce couldn,t play that drum pattern even if he had six arms.Seeing the Bunnymen live in 80-82 was just incredible. So powerful,so cool,so effortless.
@bunnymanzimbo saw these guys live less than 2 days ago at tramlines festival in Sheffield, UK, and was more than disappointed. As someone who attended this legendary show in '83, it was devastating to see how far the band had fallen.
@bunnymanzimbo The different level you speak of is not a higher level. It is just different. Just as every band ever is different from every band ever. Your metronome comment is a particularly bad example seeing as Stephen Morrison (JD drummer) was practically a human drum machine.
@bunnymanzimbo Hahah, The Smiths were the ones on another level. Bunnymen I love and are fantastic but the Smiths are in the Most High Temple with very few to share with space with. Bunnymen are their opening act!
@djangolad Yeah, I'm gonna agree with you. The Smiths are better. So is the Cure, though how do you compare the Cure and the Smiths? totally different bands.
smiths are better....as are the jam...and joy division....and david bowie......and the cure.......think they can be matched alright there nowhere near the best of the 80's.
The Smiths are better, as are Joy Division. The Jam are good, but I wouldn't place them over The Bunnymen. David Bowie is overrated. The Cure are a steaming pile of hot garbage, I don't know how you can place them above E&TBM. So I would say that yes, they are indeed very near the best of the 80's.
david bowie was a genius. Lyrically and melodically in a different league to the bunnymen. example "if u should fall into my arms, tremble like a flower". Genius. The Cure are a matter of taste really i wouldnt argue on that one. Jesus and the mary chain were up there aswell i like them.
@returnofamnesiac The Cure are a steaming pile of garbage? come on seriously? If you are a true fan of that era how can you say that? The Cure are still viable today.
I'm sure they were better in the early '80s, but they are still worth seeing live. I miss Pete's drumming, though. He was a huge Can fan...and it shows!
I think are are brilliant but I do remember them slagging Bowie off when the were new becasue he was still going. I bet the wish they hadnt done that now
This is 26 year ago - I forgot what a great band they were/ Theye are here in Dubai in Nov (2009) I have not heard one of their songs since the 80s - are they still worth seeing. I will go for the nostalga
sandprof - Yes! they are they still very worth seeing - & not for nostalgia - they have great new songs as well as classics - and now live, they sound as Great as ever!!
Fantastic record, absolutely timeless as most old songs, if this or Bowie sound and vision or sumthin came out today i'd buy it in a heartbeat. Someof the shit around today isn't even worth downloading for free!
Thanks SO much for the information...but for the love of GOD...who let him out on stage in those hideous shorts?! LOL! As picky as Mac was about his hair and the fit he had when Pete shaved his head...can't believe he let the guy wear a diaper.
I agree and if I remember correctly McCulloch and Cope had early collaborations before the Teardrop Explodes formed but I believe there isn't any love lost between them now but I could be wrong.
I'm perhaps unique, in that I love both The Bunnymen and U2? I think both bands are excellent musically, although in terms of pure ability, I'd say the Bunnymen shade it as Les is a far superior player to Adam Clayton, IMHO. Both Will and Dave are wonderfully gifted, although neither of them is technically correct in their playing; they've both admitted as much in interviews. Genius can't be taught.
Both are amazing bands without doubt. Anyone who says otherwise is a fucking knob in my opinion. I passionately hate U2 haters (they only hate them because of Bono's persona and their "nostalgic" sound these days) and I'm really quite saddened that the Bunnies aren't being hailed as legends by every person on the street. Most people I know haven't even heard of them. A travesty.
I agree, A travesty. However a close friend of mine from South Africa introduced me to ETBM, so at least they're known elsewhere in the world, which can only be a good thing eh?
His name is Jake Brockman and he was the Bunnymens first roadie and from the early eighties through the early nineties he played guitar and keyboards for the Bunnies during the live shows. On Reverberation(the Macless Bunny record) he was actually FINALLY listed as an official member of the band. Yes the shorts are hoorifying but without JB the Bunnymen of the 80's would have been a very different band.
You're absolutely right with all your Jake Brockman facts.. but that's not him! I wish I could remember the name of the beautiful androgynous boy in the shorts because I knew him slightly back in 1983. All I remember is that he moved to London from Liverpool and was in the Psychedelic Furs for about 5 minutes. I'd also love to know where Jake is after all these years...
His name is Mike Mooney, according to the book Turquoise Days: The Weird World of E&TB. I thought Jake was a part of Will's side project called BOM, or something like that.
Bono said once, "Ian is cooler me". Edges early guitar playing was kinda ripp off of Wills style. I love U2 dont get me wrong but Echo had the looks and the sound that reflected a new generation to come.
back in the day, when I would roam around with a boom box playing Echo tapes, people would routinely mistake it for U2. It's the bass propelling the melody with the slashing guitar over top that does it. The Who did the same thing, but in a different way. I'm not saying U2 was ripping off Echo, but they had a similar way of constructing songs, at least at first.
I disagree about Edge's sound. If anything, Edge was emulating Television. But he took it way beyond that level when he started playing against a delay. Edge has evolved over the years, but Will really hasn't. I don't mean that in a nasty way or anything, it's just that Will still plays everything on 1 or 2 strings. He has admitted that he STILL hasn't learned the big chord in The Cutter. (He didn't play it...guy from Lightning Seeds did.)
did anyone ever tell you who that guy is? He creeps me out with his diaper-like shorts and he just looks so out of place............did someone in the band owe him a favor or something and gave him his 15 minutes of fame?

Yes the shorts are hoorifying but without JB the Bunnymen of the 80's would have been a very different band.
His name is Mike Mooney, and he played with the Psych. Furs. He's not Jake Brockman. Jake can be seen playing keyboards in the dark in Echo's Rockpalast 1983 videos. Sorry it took awhile to get back to you! :)

"Ian is cooler than me"...correction!

Who's the extra guy playing the hollowbody guitar?
Fairmont4ever 4 years ago
did anyone ever tell you who that guy is? He creeps me out with his diaper-like shorts and he just looks so out of place............did someone in the band owe him a favor or something and gave him his 15 minutes of fame?

His name is Jake Brockman and he was the Bunnymens first roadie and from the early eighties through the early nineties he played guitar and keyboards for the Bunnies during the live shows. On Reverberation(the Macless Bunny record) he was actually FINALLY listed as an official member of the band. Yes the shorts are hoorifying but without JB the Bunnymen of the 80's would have been a very different band.
IMHO

His name is Mike Mooney, and he played with the Psych. Furs. He's not Jake Brockman. Jake can be seen playing keyboards in the dark in Echo's Rockpalast 1983 videos. Sorry it took awhile to get back to you! :)
