@litzbatistajunior Read customer comments about both cameras at my HowNowVideo(dot)com website. Click the Buy Gear link and click the bottom-most advertisement to view comments at my trusted vendor. I had the Sony only a few days for review. I use the Panasonic HMC150 for my professional work and love it.
@vmproductuons focus issues, because the sony doesn't have very good auto focus, but keep in mind that if you're gonna use these the way they're built for would be full manual so you shouldn't have that problem.
@hobocamptheater Thanks for your reply, I am really looking forward to buying the HXR NX5, as upgrade to my Sony VX2000. I find manually focusing quite difficult. Especially with moving scenes. Indeed with ‘static’ interviews I could set it manually, Is there a easy reference to do this? I have had some issue where when later viewed through a large monitor, I realize the focus is bad. Especially when the subjects leans forward etc. Also with chroma keying (blue screen)
I need to retire my Panasonic AG-DVC80, and I'm eyeing the new AG-AC130 and AG-AC160 that will go on the market this fall. However, with the exception of Sony's dual card slots and longer zoom, the HMC150 represents an incredible value -- even when you add in the cost of a Panasonic 5400 mAh battery, 32GB class 10 SDHC card, and Rode NTG1 shotgun mic, you still have a nice HD rig out of the box for about $700 less than the Sony. I expect the HMC150 price to plummet when the AC130 ships.
"At the time this footage was shot, the NX5U was suffering from back focus issues, and is not what a properly functioning Sony HXR-NX5U NXCAM looks like. The HXR-NX5U was out of focus, so the HXR-NX5U NXCAM images appear much softer than they should be."
@randolph50 I had the Sony on loan for the review. I did notice that the generic settings of the Sony were softer in appearance. But it was the same with the Canon XH-A1. With proper tweaking of the gamma, black level, chroma, etc., the Sony (and as with my Canon XH-A1) should look just fine. I don't have the Sony to test back focus issues.
Hi David, I know you did this video quite a while back, but I just now found it because I am looking at the Sony HXR-NX5U for a possible purchase to get me through the summer of doc shooting. I can't wait until October to get the Panasonic AG-AC160. I have interviews to shoot now.
I was way put off by the apparent softness of the image compared to the Pany HMC150. Since you say you were using auto exposure, was it possible that the Sony added some gain?
THANK YOU A LOT, SO now i've a chose. and do you know hmc 80? do you have something to tell ? i've owne 2 hvr 270 ! do you know?, and i'm thinking that panasonic ins't balance with then, what do you think mate ?
@rafaelcsm26 I'm not familiar with the hvr 270. I've never used it. But balancing between brands is sometimes difficult. It all depends on setting up the profiles to match. Can't really help on this one.
Hi David, good job, i'm Rafael from Brazil, i'm looking for a good camera, and i found yours videos, thank you ! In your opinion what is more close of reality ? I'm talk about color, i saw thar NX5 is more lighten them 150, 150 is more dark. isn't it ? what would you rather to buy ?
@rafaelcsm26 When white balance is set properly, the HMC150 is the way to go. I had the Sony on loan for review only, so I really didn't have real-world experience with it. The Sony lens is 20x, so if you want more zoom, then the Sony is the choice. But I've used the HMC150 for two years now and it's the best camera I've owned.
Great review, thanks. I'm debating over both, its a tough one cause I've used the Panasonic quite a bit and love it, but I'm leaning towards the Sony. Just a quick question.
Does the Sony have an interval recording option? If not do you know of any camcorders of similar caliber that does? I'm dying to find a reasonably affordable camera with a time lapse option, but they're hard to come by for some reason.
@busby2 I had the Sony on loan for the review only. I don't know about interval recording. I would suggest you go to my HowNowVideo(dot)com site, click on the camera at the bottom of the page and check the specs. Perhaps you can locate a PDF user manual for the camera. Good luck deciding.
@busby2 One more thing. If you want a decent camera for interval recording, try the Panasonic TM700. It's cheap enough so you might be able to afford the Sony as well if that camera doesn't allow interval recording.
thanks for the review. Its interesting to see this side-by-side comparison, with out-of-the-box settings. I own an HMX150 (151 in the UK), and I'm very pleased with the sharp image it produces and saturated colours. However, I have only reviewed the NX5 (shop model), so not as familiar with it. I would say the Panasonic can achieve a well balanced picture with very minimal effort. However the Panasonic build quality cannot rival's SONY on this level.
@Jay1967 Yes. The Panasonic HMC150 is so light it feels like a toy. I've owned the Canon XH-A1 and its build was excellent, just like the Sony. With a proper white balance, I think the Panasonic looks great. Thanks for commenting.
Good test, mate. The Panasonic has a slightly sharper picture and more saturation out of the box. The Sony appeared brighter but more washed out. I would have liked to have seen a low-light comparo. Maybe NX time?
When zoomed out on the Panisonic, the subject in the video looks to be more narrow. I noticed this on the other video and this one. Can someone confirm this?
@HypeTingStudio Yes. When switching between the Sony and Panasonic, I did notice that the Panasonic's lens seems to make the image more narrow. But in real life usage, I've never found the Panasonic to produce a bad image.
@HalomasterA69 Look into the GoPro HD cameras. Check out this website: goprocamera(dot)com. Or look at the Panasonic TM700 (search Google). Finally, some folks are using Digital SLR cameras like the Canon Rebel T2i to shoot video. Those are 3 great choices for under $1000. Good luck.
@HypeTingStudio I can only take a guess here.. but this could be because the Panasonic has a wider lens, thus the image seems very slightly more (vertically) compressed at the wide end of the zoom? Both the SONY and the Panasonic are using very good optics (Dicomar vs SONY's G lens), so these differences are more easily spotted.. maybe?! dteubner maybe able to confirm this?
here in spain the only thing that I could find closest to the HMC150 is the HMC151 that costs 1200 euros less than the sony NX5....you think it´s worthing the 1500-1600 $ ?
@catalintoma27 The HMC 151 is the PAL version of the Panasonic. That is a very good camera. You will like it. I use the HMC 150. It's the best camera I've owned to date.
I would like to look through your website without the video or audio playing - I find it distracting and a little intrusive. Is it possible to turn it off? Thanks.
@MrAtomickitten All computers has a audio mute switch, often on the right-bottom of your screen. It's a little speaker icon. Try muting your audio. I believe you mean the homepage of my website. I don't have a mute button there. Sorry.
Is it difficult to split the video into top and bottom halves and have the comparison top/bottom? Would be so much more helpful in seeing the difference between the two. I have not done much video editing at all so do not know how difficult this would be.
You are trying to compare two cameras with different exposure... This test shows nothing since the high compression on youtube, what we need is raw files from both cameras with the same exposure, gamma settings and so on (preferably neutral on both cameras).
Great video, as are all of yours! My GL1 finally died and I am surprised at how hard it is to go forward (good quality HD and cards) while not losing the core features of this old camera (Great lens, 20x optical zoom, 3 chips, LANC, excellent mic, great external controls). I'm down to Sony HXR-NX5U (or HDR-AX2000), Panasonic AG-HMC150 (or AG-HMC40), JVC GY-HM100U or Canon GL2 (stick with Canon until they come up with an affordable equivalent to the XF-300). Your thoughts? Thanks.
Because of this video I've learned about white/grey card that will be of great use in my photography learning. Thanks a lot! And I liked the Panasonic more because of it's colors and wideness.
On a separate note, David, I'm looking for a mic for my soon to be owned 150. What are you using? I see that it's a lapel mic. Can you make any recommendations? Audio sounds pretty good.
@thomasdavis79 Sony makes some good lapel mikes for about $400 or $500. I record to the camera and then sweeten the audio using Adobe Auditions. In Auditions I apply a multi-band compressor to pump it up a bit. Anyway, check out HowNowVideo(dot)com and click on the Get Gear link. I have a link to some audio stuff. Good luck in choosing.
@dteubner@dteubner Thanks for the reply. I have a second question if you have a second ;)
I'm choosing between the ag-hmc150 and the sony hdr-ax2000. have any experience with the 2000? which do you find better? i know it's relative, but i would appreciate someone's opinion who might have experience with both. b&h's no interest for 6 months ends soon; need to act fast.
either way, if I go through b&h, I'll be sure to go through your site.
Excellent video--I have the HMC150 but because of the HD-SDI output of the Sony--I may pick up one of those too since I use a Tricaster HD set up occaisionally.
I still like Pannys picture over the Sony and i have looked at a lot of test footage from the Sony. On paper the Sony should be sharper--but I havent seen it yet.
@Nyc2009ify Yes, I thought the Sony would at least be as sharp as the 150. By the way, Canon is soon to release a replacement to the XH-A1. That might be one to check out too.
I sent the Sony back. It was on loan for me to review. There is one low-light test on YouTube for the Sony. Perhaps you can find it. In my opinion, the HMC150 isn't that soft. I agree that it isn't "cold as steel" sharp, but it still produces good results. Perhaps in the future cameras will get to the 4:2:2 codec.
Which cam is the low-light champ? The 150 has been criticized as "soft" (even the HMC40 is said to be sharper), but it looks as though the Sony is softer. The Sony also has HD-SDI out. But I'd take CCD's over CMOS's.
Why are camcorder manufacturers still making 3 chip cameras when the Canon DSLR's make beautiful images from one chip? Time for Canon to step up and replace the obsolete XH-A1 with a single-CMOS cam with their new 4:2:2 codec.
I still prefer 3ccd. I will used the camera for event videography. The 150 does not have the rolling shutter problem with flash photography when filming a concert or wedding. As soon as I have the money I'll visit your site and buy the Panasonic. Thanks for the review.
Perhaps. I've done some tweaks to the Sony for one of the presets. I got it to look much better with richer blacks and more saturation. This is a fine camera.
Since you have both cameras, can I ask the following question: Taking into account that the NX5 has more features and better lowlight performance than the HMC150 but it has 3cmos and less color quality; can the NX5 match the HMC150 image quality with color and contrast correction during editing? I do conference /event filming (in low light) and scenic stock video clips and plan to buy one of these cameras.
I believe the matching can be done with a little tweaking of the Sony. I have the Sony on loan and will be sending it back soon, so I probably won't go through that excersice myself. But the Sony has many more parameters to help tweak the settings than the Pani. Of course, you can make the tweaks in your program after the fact.
It's strange to me that you compare them in full auto since most pros use these cameras in manual.
How about doing a test with wb preset in 5600k aperture open 0gain 1/60 shutter and MANUAL FOCUS i liked it when you used the same frame divided to clearly see the differences.
what is your opinion on picture quality since we cant see it in hd resolution on youtube?
Sony NX5 has more features but consistently in all videos that I have seen the HMC150 has better colors. The NX5 colors look a little bit washout. I have found that in the long run, Panasonic cameras are more durable than Sony. I guess that more features = more circuits = more probability of a failure.

Clearly a much sharper, better-contrast picture on the HMC150.

HMC150 is better "out of the box." I'm sure with some tweaking, the Sony would be punchier.

I have NO SONY envy. I'll stick with my 150, thanks very much. And thanks, David, for taking the time to make this comparison.

What tripod are you using?

Sony NX5 has more features but consistently in all videos that I have seen the HMC150 has better colors. The NX5 colors look a little bit washout. I have found that in the long run, Panasonic cameras are more durable than Sony. I guess that more features = more circuits = more probability of a failure.

Thank you! Great job. Nice comparison. Which camera do you like better?

Both are great cameras. Sony has more bells and whistles. But the Panasonic is lighter with a wider wide-angle. Not sure which camera I like better.
