Didn't Lance 'die' sometime before Shattered Soldier? In the canon, I think it was the year Hard Corps happened. I remember a cutscene saying that it was 6 years prior to SS, but somehow he managed to survive.

Actually they thought Lance died before Shattered Soldier but he lived. He then grew angry and became the villain in Shattered. That was why Bill was released from prison and the anger from it all made him the villain in neo contra and since Lucia was programed to follow him, she had no choice
