im so confused, i understand the eq, but the compressor whats the point of it , what does it do? anyone know where i can learn the basics, what an envelope is, what a threshold is, like explained to a complete beginner in music production.
@alexkamrock Envelope I Think Is The Volume. I Really Dont See The Point In Compression, I Guess Its Supposed To Make Your Track Sound Together Like Smushed Together. Idk. I Dont Use Compression And My Beats Sound Good.
REAL TA;L!!!.....U ABOUT TO MAKE EVERY PRODUCER IN THE MIDWEST MAKIN BEATS ON FRUITY LOOPS HATE ME....CAUSE THIS IS GOLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!IM FOCUSED!
You should also remember that the dB distribution in the EQ should be also proportional to the pitch of the sound. High pitched sounds, sound a lot higher than equal dB low sounds. Compare the distance to which you can hear a 10kHz sound an an 400 Hz one.
Im still confused tho. How come your doing it in the master channel, i got told never to touch that. Can someone help please, I put reverb or any plugin to get the sound that i want for my melody or or percussion, but i still get dull sound,
great tutorial...i understand whats going on and why. but how come so many people say not to add compression or EQ on the master channel?? especially in dubstep...im a true beginner but pickin things up real quick..LOVE IT !!!
Very very informative and you explained it very well for me to understand. Looking forward to applying your techniques to my work. Thank you very much! :)
I watched this tutorial ... its pretty good but the thing i still cannot understand is ... WHAT IS THE COMPRESSiOn ... and why is it necessary ... why is it so useful ?
@DigitalAffliction it keeps your sounds in safe area. So the output of the audio will sounds more clear, and Compression is one of the most important aspect of audio engineering and mixing
Hey man, really impressed with your vids! i love how you explain in depth how the plugin effects the sound. i was baffled by compressors until i watched this! thanks alot man, keep up the good work!
a problem im having is that my vocals will have peeks like if a say something with a T or something and yes i have a pop filter but its still very loud and harsh on the ears... when i try to compress it the whole track is compressed... do u have any advice?
Great tutorial, I learned a lot... You have a great way of teaching that's easy to understand. Though I don't do a lot of the stuff in this tutorial, it just goes to show there is no specific "correct" way to mixing, as long as it sounds good and works for you! I will definitely try these tips out. Thanks a lot!
very descriptive tutorial great for teaching me use of the effect, but i still dont understand what the compressor does to the sound exactly, and how would i evnelope and trigger these effects in the song? ive been making hip hop beats for about a year now and im trying to get into more of an electro house kind of deal. help would be much appreciated.
it compresses d freq. so it won't go over whatever u set it up 2. for example if u have a person talking & then that person starts screaming obviously u r gonna hear a big difference on d volume. But if u compress it whenever d person scream it's not gonna blow ur head cuz d freq stays below whatever u set it up 2... that's roughly what a compressor does...
Good analogy. Yeah, that pretty much sums it up. In technical terms, you are reducing the range between the loudest and quietest sounds, essentially making your song/beat sound more rounded and equal.
To compress audio based on gain is to dynamically reduce or increase volume based on the current peak volume of the input track. Generally it's decrease. For instance, a very loud instrument may be so loud that its sound is becoming too harsh and "square", therefore you use a compressor so that whenever the volume gets too loud to sound good it becomes reduced in an appropriate manner.
If i used fruity loops id really appreciate you sharing your knowlege. that would be really helpful. Check me out though and let me know what you think.
this helped out so much i dont think people realize what you posted..all my beats sound really proffesional now

cut the lower freq in the mastering channel below 60-30 as it cuts away the unnecessary freq so it sounds smoother and better.
