The argument about who would win is stupid. A grizzle bear could probably kill a cougar if it came to it, but the bear would sustain many injuries in the process. This would result in the bear being weaker and less capable of surviving. In the wild, predators usually back down unless the kill is easy because they won't risk injury. That is what happened, the cougar is just tough enough.
I actually think the bear was smart enough to retreat. That female cougar would've fought to protect her baby and would've killed that bear even if it was the last she did.

The cougar wouldn't even waste its time fighting a grizzly unless there were something at stake, like babies, so it would probably just leave. But, with motivation, the speed of the cat makes it tough.
