It has those black stripes because movies are played in 16:9 aspect ratio, and you monitor has a 16:10 aspect ratio. But that monitor is awesome, as it offers great gaming resolution 1920x1200 and still can play 1080p movies.

I keep it in "game mode" and have brightness set down to 11 and contrast at 80, "sharpness" at 45, saturation at 50 and "overdrive" at 60. There's also a feature called "ASCR" (Asus Smart Contrast Ratio), which I think should be kept ON. And of course it looks best at native resolution.
It's not a high end monitor, I don't think the lcd is utterly opaque. But I'm very happy with the picture I'm getting on it now.
Best monitor for no light leak I ever had was a 15" Dell. Thing was perfect.

That would be true for most movies (which are 16:9), but that movie on his screen is 2.39:1. It would have black bars on the screen on any monitor.

60Hz at the native resolution. From 1440x900 on down, 60Hz and 75Hz. From 1024x768 on down, 60, 75 and 85Hz.
