Weird comments. When this came out when I was in grade 10, many years ago, I was knocked off my feet. Can't say much knocks me off my feet now (there are a few, but lots of yawning). This song still get me and this is a superb version and I don't get the sampling comment because it's irrelevant because we are talking about this song, not derivatives from it.
The kind of people who are complaining about MIA and her sample would never have been in the spirit of The Clash to begin with. They were a band that appreciated and covered other artists and genres and stood for something.
ALL YOU FUCKERS WHO ARE ARGUING OVER THE CLASH AND MIA ARE MISSING THE POINT: Why the fuck does he have his thumb in his ear? Does he have an ear infection or some shit?
@kurtissmo He doesn't have an ear infection stupid. He is plugging his ear to hear himself sing. Otherwise he would just hear the blast from the amps. Now artists wear ear devices. Where have you been??? Respect the dead....Okay!!

Still my favourite Clash song. Absolutely ace. Joe Strummer is an inspiration to us all. So much love for The Clash. I'm 17 and i understand this music, that's what enduring music is: It's for anyone who feels the music in their souls, no matter where or when they're listening to it or who they are. The Clash remain the greatest Rock n Roll band in history.
In early 1983, drummer Terry Chimes left the band after the in-fighting and turmoil of the Combat Rock Tour. He was replaced by Pete Howard for the US Festival in San Bernardino, California, which The Clash co-headlined with David Bowie and Van Halen. The group performed on May 28, the festival's New Music Day, to a crowd of 140,000. After the show, members of the band brawled with security staff. This was Mick Jones' last appearance with the group. In September 1983, he was fired. Wikipedia

Degenerateen thanks for this video. This tune is great off " The Clash On Broadway " 3 cd set. It states unedited version. I can't hear a difference from the Combat Rock LP version. Ethier way awesome tune !
to be honest i hate when people call the clash a punk band.because they were so much more than that.there was nothing they couldnt try and turn it into something magical.there talent and reach were endless and still is. you listen to these songs almost 30 years later and theyre still as powerful as they were when they first played them.pure genius

i think they do deserve more credit but they werent able to make the song that popular like mia did. its just getting your music paid with different lyrics on it. its not a big deal really.
and btw the MIA sample sounds completely different than any versions if heard this song
granted its the same notes but it just has a different sound to it.
I went to Toronto to see the Who's final tour in '82. The Clash were to back up! We were 18 and took the train hostage a whole cabin full of us with mickey's of whisky... and us singing Clash songs all the way. Something happened. Joe Jackson got booed off stage. Stuff was thrown. The Who came out. That was it. I never found out what really happened. Anybody out there got the story on that one... I can't believe that happened still to this day.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
its a totally different song. i laugh so hard when people say this. you want to know the difference? The clash sounds like they're shitting their pants, and M.I.A. actually sounds good.
THIS is where Topper Headon should have rejoined the band. That would have solidified things. Joe might not have kicked Mick out. The Clash would have taken music to limits unknown. Like the have proved through presenting the world with "TIMELESS" music. Letting Topper go because of his habit was a mistake, his habit NEVER got in the way of his practicing or live shows. EVER. It was Joe's mistake,.
You're a little wrong there, Toppers habbits DID cause a bunch of troubles with his playing and rehearlsing, once he fell from the stage in a middle of a gig, and the last gig with Topper, he was in his own little world and was lucky enough to get to the end of the set. But yes, it still was a mistake to sack him out completely.
They we're "punk rock" man. So he fell off stage. And he got fried. That's a granted these days. He did nothing wrong. Joe was into control. 1st Topper. Then Mick. Paul was never a threat. Joe wrote his own history.
Johnny Green wrote in his book, The Riot Of Our Own, he was on coke or heroin and fell off the stage (I'm not completly sure, if he fell behind the stage, or through his kit) in a middle of a song! And sure they were Punk Rock, but all kinda heavy shit you take really affects your playing.
Look at Weiland, Cobain, the stones, Coutney, anselmo, pantera, that blues singer female 22 blowing out her lungs on crack, od's, and that's just the famous ppl... what about the ones who struggle along following a dream and are strung out with nothing who commit suicide... or whatever... I'm just saying it is common place... yet live through the punk era alone...

tuturura 3 years ago 6
yeah you two are pretty retarded,
people dont steal beats
they SAMPLE beats from older songs
M.I.A. sampled this riff
and now T.I. sampled a loop
from M.I.A. so its completely legal
as long as you get permission and PAY UP
just look at the carter III, theres a ton of samples.
jeffiskoolerthanyou 3 years ago 3
people don't steal beats... uncreative people steal beats... or "sample" them... but they should stop calling themselves artists. Cause artists creat stuff. They don't take someone else's art and put a paint brush on it and then call it theirs.
A la... DJs. They are bullshit. They are functional in that they are able to use other people's music to create a party atmosphere... but artists they are not... unless they creat their own stuff.
audijeep 3 years ago
part of that is true and part not, cause
you can completely recreate a song with a sample
from an older song, look at Let the Beat Build
by Lil Wayne, he sampled "Day by Day" by Eddie Kendricks and i think thats pretty creative
so by sampling they are just coming up with
a background that means something to them
or soundsgood, its better thanjust a beat
DJ's, SOME use only others work to create a party, i like DJ Qbert - a scratch DJ
he doesnt really use others work to create a party atmosphere.
jeffiskoolerthanyou 3 years ago
would you people shut the fuck up..
the clash gets a royaltie check.
and im sure they are glad to have another million dollars because some indian chick sampled a riff.
and what does it matter to you
you dont create shit
you just complain of how people are uncreative for "STEALING" music but you have nothing of your own to show.
wewillwin9999 3 years ago
I still dont think its right...people think MIA made the riff...but in reality Clash lose credit...

if people REALLY REALLY loved the song they would see what sample it is from like i do.
i think they do deserve more credit but they werent able to make the song that popular like mia did. its just getting your music paid with different lyrics on it. its not a big deal really.
and btw the MIA sample sounds completely different than any versions if heard this song
granted its the same notes but it just has a different sound to it.

I saw that Who concert on VHS, I wish I could have been at that concert. Big Who fan. John Entwistle and Keith Moon R.I.P Clash rock as well.

its a totally different song. i laugh so hard when people say this. you want to know the difference? The clash sounds like they're shitting their pants, and M.I.A. actually sounds good.

THIS is where Topper Headon should have rejoined the band. That would have solidified things. Joe might not have kicked Mick out. The Clash would have taken music to limits unknown. Like the have proved through presenting the world with "TIMELESS" music. Letting Topper go because of his habit was a mistake, his habit NEVER got in the way of his practicing or live shows. EVER. It was Joe's mistake,.
mushroomheadsquish 3 years ago
You're a little wrong there, Toppers habbits DID cause a bunch of troubles with his playing and rehearlsing, once he fell from the stage in a middle of a gig, and the last gig with Topper, he was in his own little world and was lucky enough to get to the end of the set. But yes, it still was a mistake to sack him out completely.

They we're "punk rock" man. So he fell off stage. And he got fried. That's a granted these days. He did nothing wrong. Joe was into control. 1st Topper. Then Mick. Paul was never a threat. Joe wrote his own history.
mushroomheadsquish 3 years ago
Johnny Green wrote in his book, The Riot Of Our Own, he was on coke or heroin and fell off the stage (I'm not completly sure, if he fell behind the stage, or through his kit) in a middle of a song! And sure they were Punk Rock, but all kinda heavy shit you take really affects your playing.

All the original four together did magical things... they all had there problems and there own things... too bad... they will remain timeless.

What does "That's a granted these days" mean?

Look at Weiland, Cobain, the stones, Coutney, anselmo, pantera, that blues singer female 22 blowing out her lungs on crack, od's, and that's just the famous ppl... what about the ones who struggle along following a dream and are strung out with nothing who commit suicide... or whatever... I'm just saying it is common place... yet live through the punk era alone...

Why is Joe S. looking at the camera, is he posing or what? Thumb in his ear. Showman, no doubt of that.
Song is great, as it should be according to the band's standard. Band is playing along and together, as a whole, in a brilliant manner.

"Thumb in ear" so he can hear his own voice better -- this was in the days before in-ear monitors.

Not only one of the greatest but also one of the saddest songs ever written. Devastating footnote in American history.
