the movie was actuly alot worse than the book in my opinion. it started in the first ten minutes with the guy from the magesterium trying to poison lord asriel. thats so not how it happens! it is the master of jordan for cryin out loud! that changed everything right there. the nagesterium is not directly involved except for the general oblation board in the series until the second book, and,mostly in the third book.

Actually he didn't promote atheism or bash Christianity in the books (which were far superior to that travesty of a movie), he was promoting fighting for what's right, loyalty to your friends and thinking for yourself.

And when the kids kill God, it's accidental and God was actually just the first being with consciouness and he lied to all the others saying he created them. To be honest I'm surprised no one has mentioned the blatantly gay angels ^.^

You're not correct. The books are very much anti-religion, particularly Christianity. This is, in my opinion, a very good thing. Secondly, the killing God thing is what Lord Asriel purposely set out to do from the beginning and this is approved of and encouraged as the right thing to do. I very much agree with you statement that the books are far superior, the movie was actually pretty horrible, but don't misrepresent the books as not being direct attacks against Christianity, they are.

I've listened to the books on audio tape and I don't recall any kind of castration...unless they're really trying to take something in a metaphorical way as castration or fgm. Which you'd have to be pretty bored or strange to link together....Are they talking about when the child is severed from his daemon? The actual metaphor is much darker as the daemon is someone's soul. But on the whole the trilogy isn't atheistic. It's not even about good vs. evil. I'll have to check out the film.

Don't bother. Read the books instead. Audio books tend to miss bits out. Then again I've heard that the His Dark Materials books are read by Philip Pullman so it might not.

Actually the audio books of His Dark Materials are unabridged, narrated by Pullman himself and have a full cast - they are excellent!

Interesting your comment about the Majesterium wishing to rule all worlds, reminds me of Christian missionaries traveling to Africa, Asia, etc. to convert all non-belivers. Only Christian reference I saw in the film was where the bear burst out of the Majesterium building in his armour. The building was covered in Christian icons, ie, it was a church. Great Video!!

As an "evil atheist," if I wanted to change children's beliefs, I would teach them critical thinking, logic, and reason. Those would be more dangerous than any kiddie movie.

This is about the time frame of six minutes reg, the people(I use that term for want of a better one) hate individual thinking. To show a way of thinking that is anyway opposite to theirs is not only dangerous but deadly. Its played upon in both the movie and the book(I'm working through book one right now), people like that don't want anything other than their opinions known.

It apparently only did okay at the U.S. box office, but it kicked ass worldwide, plus the DVD sales aren't in yet, and it doesn't come out in theatres here (Japan) until March. I'd say the whole trilogy being made is a pretty safe bet.

In the movie "30 Days of Night" a vampire is holding a girl and preparing to kill her. The girl says something like "God help" and vampire says "God" and looks up to the sky and says "There is no God" and then kills her :)

Bears are very fast. When God is involved anything is possible. You have to admit the Golden Compass promotes witchcraft and demonology. In the movies demons are present as pets of your other half. How many parents monitor what their kids watch or reads today? Not many.

Yes, parents don't do enough to monitor their kids, which is their problem, not Hollywood's. If they raised their kids right, as InfidelGuy suggests, they wouldn't have to worry that one movie would undo all their teachings.
