Thanks for this. For the record, I liked both Narnia and Compass. I have read all the Narnia books. They are just fun/cute books to read. I know the allegory, but I'm not going to deny that they are pleasurable to read. Folks need to calm down. Calm. The. Hell. Down!!
Very good. I like this infidel guy chap. However, I wish he would read the books, and then he could combat what those alarmists emails were railing about. Most of it was completely inaccurate. I'm not an atheist really, but man, is his side fairer than the other.
the movie was actuly alot worse than the book in my opinion. it started in the first ten minutes with the guy from the magesterium trying to poison lord asriel. thats so not how it happens! it is the master of jordan for cryin out loud! that changed everything right there. the nagesterium is not directly involved except for the general oblation board in the series until the second book, and, mostly in the third book.
ps, the other book you were ralking about was Paradise Lost by John Milton
Actually he didn't promote atheism or bash Christianity in the books (which were far superior to that travesty of a movie), he was promoting fighting for what's right, loyalty to your friends and thinking for yourself.
And when the kids kill God, it's accidental and God was actually just the first being with consciouness and he lied to all the others saying he created them. To be honest I'm surprised no one has mentioned the blatantly gay angels ^.^
You're not correct. The books are very much anti-religion, particularly Christianity. This is, in my opinion, a very good thing. Secondly, the killing God thing is what Lord Asriel purposely set out to do from the beginning and this is approved of and encouraged as the right thing to do. I very much agree with you statement that the books are far superior, the movie was actually pretty horrible, but don't misrepresent the books as not being direct attacks against Christianity, they are.
I've listened to the books on audio tape and I don't recall any kind of castration...unless they're really trying to take something in a metaphorical way as castration or fgm. Which you'd have to be pretty bored or strange to link together....Are they talking about when the child is severed from his daemon? The actual metaphor is much darker as the daemon is someone's soul. But on the whole the trilogy isn't atheistic. It's not even about good vs. evil. I'll have to check out the film.
Don't bother. Read the books instead. Audio books tend to miss bits out. Then again I've heard that the His Dark Materials books are read by Philip Pullman so it might not.
Good job. You got to do an episode about this movie. Personally, I'm sick of receiving these "warnings" from Catholic organizations and some brainwashed acquaintances of mine.
I never said you're bad. I just said you're brainwashed, as every single religious person in the world. The kind of people who are easily driven to violence whenever they feel there is something else in the world other than their own beliefs. Well, if you're not like that, you're probably not as "catholic" or religious as you think you are. If you are what you think a catholic is, then I am too (I'm baptized).
you're right I am not as regilous as a lot of people think. I am more of an atheious (my spelling sucks) but I still do believe in God but the golden compass is a really good movie I like it it's sorta like the witch the lion and the wardrobe
i repeat: i'm sick of those mails from Christians claiming that movies such as The Golden Compass are intended to destroy faith. you would probably understand what i say if you received lots of e-mails from atheists trying to convert you.
TOWING JEHOVA. James Morrow. Awesome book. Awesome video. Thanks Infidel Guy. I'm a new subscriber. Keep up the loving attitude and the good logic. Best way to keep us evolving. - Boysen
That's how it's spelt over here in the UK, I think you may be set to UK nationality. That or YouTube is one of the few places online that spells the way my people do.
Christian groups exploit the popularity of works like The Last Temptation, Life of Brian, Harry Potter and this film by calling for bans simply in order to generate publicity for themselves. Religion is trying to hi-jack popular culture to gain some attention in the lime-light.
I think the xians are just scared about other philosophies kina like how an insecure male is scared about others men being around his woman. They know they are worthless.
Interesting your comment about the Majesterium wishing to rule all worlds, reminds me of Christian missionaries traveling to Africa, Asia, etc. to convert all non-belivers. Only Christian reference I saw in the film was where the bear burst out of the Majesterium building in his armour. The building was covered in Christian icons, ie, it was a church. Great Video!!
As an "evil atheist," if I wanted to change children's beliefs, I would teach them critical thinking, logic, and reason. Those would be more dangerous than any kiddie movie.
I plan on seeing this movie on Christmas day! Thanks for brining it to my attention, Christians!
This is about the time frame of six minutes reg, the people(I use that term for want of a better one) hate individual thinking. To show a way of thinking that is anyway opposite to theirs is not only dangerous but deadly. Its played upon in both the movie and the book(I'm working through book one right now), people like that don't want anything other than their opinions known.
Another great show. I've been a fan for a long time. On topic, ironically, all this silly "controversy" about The Golden Compass only makes me want to go see the movie and read all the books. Thanks for sharing your insights.
The Christian attacks on the movie are hilarious, they're just creating a buzz for the movie. They always do this. For Christian kids this childrens movie is the forbidden fruit, the more they can't have it, the more they're going to want to see it...
Reggie, they might have succeeded their goal. The movie costed over a 100 million dollars to create and it flopped at the box office. On a side note, I do not understand spenting that much money to make a MOVIE?!?! anyhow
I hope that's true, I really want it to succeed, not just because I hate when bad publicity sinks a good movie, but because I want the other two movies in the trilogy to get made.
It apparently only did okay at the U.S. box office, but it kicked ass worldwide, plus the DVD sales aren't in yet, and it doesn't come out in theatres here (Japan) until March. I'd say the whole trilogy being made is a pretty safe bet.
In the movie "30 Days of Night" a vampire is holding a girl and preparing to kill her. The girl says something like "God help" and vampire says "God" and looks up to the sky and says "There is no God" and then kills her :)
I wonder if anyone in USA complained about this movie. If not what is the difference? Why do they complain only about The Golden Compass and not the other movies? What is their criteria?
Well vampires are fake so any fake mythical monster can not be taken seriously. Now if a movie is going to be used to as an analogy for the way organized religion works today and how to fight it then religion fanatics must try and silence that process. For instance I can not listen to Denis Miller cause he still thinks George W Bush is a good man and has done nothing wrong.
Publicity, for the most part. They're too lazy to actually go out and read the books they freak out about so they wait for some journalist to write a half-page online article on it.
These people are funny too me. They are attacking this movie and judging something on screen thats not reality. When they themselves live pagan filled lives. They need too get over it and look at themselves for the evil thats within them. And organized religion has done more damage to Gods people than any movie could do. Great video. 5 Stars man.
Bears are very fast. When God is involved anything is possible. You have to admit the Golden Compass promotes witchcraft and demonology. In the movies demons are present as pets of your other half. How many parents monitor what their kids watch or reads today? Not many.
The movie does not promote witchcraft any more than Lord of the Rings promotes elves. The witches are characters in the story and nothing more.
Yes, parents don't do enough to monitor their kids, which is their problem, not Hollywood's. If they raised their kids right, as InfidelGuy suggests, they wouldn't have to worry that one movie would undo all their teachings.
Thanks for this. For the record, I liked both Narnia and Compass. I have read all the Narnia books. They are just fun/cute books to read. I know the allegory, but I'm not going to deny that they are pleasurable to read. Folks need to calm down. Calm. The. Hell. Down!!
