I found out later she was supposed to go back and sit next to Carson for his "Good nights" after her song but -- at around 4:03, right after she puts the Hawaiian lei around his neck? -- you can see her BURST into tears which is why she runs off stage so quickly.
Carson had, after all, practically "discovered" her, booking her on his show (her first national TV appearance) in August of 1970.
no one will ever ever have the class and talent that johnny carson had, i wasnt around for his era but watching him on youtube as much as i can and laughing my ass off more with his shows then with the new guys on late night now. johnny had something that is so rare that its one in 6 billion in my view mister carson had it and shared it for 30 years, no one will come close well done johhny hope your making people in heaven laugh.
it was 1992 and the show went from rather upbeat cheerful mood earlier, with Beth and Robin Williams and then the divine Ms. M gave some terrific performance. It brought a tear to my eye. Knowing this GIANT, this CLASS ACT will never be seen again after 40 years on television, who had Presidents, singers, entertainers, people from all walks of life come on his show. He brought us together as a nation. He's from a different time in Hollywood, a classier time. A class ending to a class act!
These clips along with the seven clips of David Letterman's tribute to Johnny (on his passing in 2005) bring tears to my eyes every time I watch them. Thanks TalkVid for posting them.
the country has definitely gone downhill since this classy man and his show went off the air; we miss you Johnny. RIP knowing you brought dignity to the world of entertainment...
I'm 52 and use to watch JC all the time. The last show where he just showed pictures is a WHO's WHO's list of the greatest actors and actress's of this era. Todays actors are dam good ... but I dont think they hold a stick to yesterdays actors.
yea, I think she was supposed to take her seat next to johnny, but it appears that she loses control of her emotions and runs backstage. IMHO (I would have to)
you just can't write a better ending, the way Bette ended the song - they way she reached out to him as she sang the last few lines - as this clip was played over and over again on TV the day he died, I could never get sick of it... I didn't want it to stop. We miss you Johnny.
If you notice, she DID break down crying at the end, and runs off so that Johnny (and the audience) didn't see her go to pieces... watch the clip again as she exits
I'm sure she struggled, and I think you can hear it in her singing at certain moments. But she's a performer so I'm sure she knows how to hang on for the sake of making it a good performance... and how important it was to nail this one and make it a moment in history!
I'll never forget seeing this the night it aired.

I miss Johnny, I love Bette. We lost a great icon. No other night show host could ever compare. Television has changed so much.

the lei wishing him safe travels was a nice touch, since Bette grew up in Hawaii and wanted to give him something on a personal level..

A level of class that we haven't seen on late night TV since. We settle for comedians where Carson was a showman.

Great Stuff! Iread years later that Carson didn't want to show up the last night as he felt there was no way to equal or top this episode.

How do you spell class "Johnny Carson"
A true gentle man and a class act !!!
I don't know how Bette Middler held on without crying during that song.
