dude video sucks, and so does this department. if its takeing them ore than 6 minute to get water on the fire i think these guys need more training or that are just lazy. just like you, because this video was lazily made.
Dumb way of entering, you should always get a ladder (If available) then attack the roof, not go in to get collapsed on!!!, and why bust out the top windows!!!!!! it just lets more Oxygen in!
WHAT THE?! Why enter that structure with fire through the roof like that????? Not worth the risk guys. House is gone before you even got the call. Defensive on that structure.....I am all about being aggressive, but not when it is already reached that stage of ventilation, not worth it.
@firecopshel To an extent I would say your right, but I would start by knocking it down from the exterior, then make entry to check the structure from the interior and finish extinguishing the fire...
@TheRescueFirefighter that is exactly what I am suggesting also. Exterior, surround and drowned then get after it inside once it is knocked down. Salvage and overhaul. I hate to see a house burn, but it can be rebuilt and replaced.
note to all firefighters..... do NOT follow suit... knocking out windows? what happens when oxygen meets fire? and the chief of all ppl should know better!
haligan 125, thanks for the info. im sure each department has their own protocols for handling this, and as we all know, there is no such thing as a 'routine fire". each situation is different, and as long as the objective is met quickly, with no injury, then it all good
What exactly did they just save by going offensive?...Fire through the roof on arrival, lightweight construction....Risk vs Reward??? I'm sure the insurance company wrote that house off before you guys even showed up onscene. This is a great video of why we are killing ourselves.
I agree, looking at the initial size up, I would have considered venting those front windows right off and try to get some defensive lines into the seat of the fire, it is possible for survivable conditions on the first floor though, get in and make a quick primary, but you are right, with the amount of fire load on those trusses, prolonged offensive attack is not cool.
Busterspeedbump I'm sure you would go defensive right away and so would most small fd's!! The attic was rolling the whole second floor wasn't on fire.. Since when can't you put out a fire while a primary search is being done??? If you want to put your mask on enroute who cares?? Jump out of the rig ready to go saves time!! Don't have to do it everytime but if you know its a worker why not?? Nice aggressive interior attack!!
Over all it seemed pretty good. Good time was saved with the forward lay, no 360 though. The white helmets even got a little dirty. Should have broken the front door's glass. Sure it damages more property but life comes before property. Fast action on popping the windows, maybe 1 3/4 attack on D side with the 2 1/2 on the B side. Fire self-ventilated, from on scene to knocking fire out seemed good until the video went to picture mode. Not too bad though.
if u have a crew doing a search, u cant put water on the fire, the water flashes to steam instantly, cooking any victims u may have. also, putting water on the fire with a external attack with crews inside is a no-no, u push the heat and flames down on them. the windows were broken out with the ladders to provide quick egress for interior crew.
@dave1135 woah, wait, what? You can't apply water to fire while doing a primary? Yes, you can. I'll give you that exterior lines need to be carefully placed if you have an interior attack, but you can most certainly conduct a search and attack at the same time. I would go so far to say you should be conducting a search and attack at the same time, especially in this setting, fire load above, steam is going to rise.
@joshfox100 the video is ok, the music SUCKS bigtime, the natural ambient sounds would have been much better.
Those firemen sure dont seem to be moving their asses at all and just taking their time, looks like they pretty much wrote the place off and were barely going to be bothered with putting the fire out.
@speggedie6 really?? you must not be a firefighter then because you would know that it extremely cuts down on visibility and it'll fog up while your still outsider getting irons or flaking out the attack line...there is no possible reason to have your mask on in the rig..
i wouldn't send a crew in there i would deploy an arial master stream and hit that roof cause that whole top floor is consumed as well as the attic floor collapse is imminent
To Fireguy 4. Thanks for the info. I have been out of it for a long time now and am not sure what they use now. . We were required to use 2.3/4 deliverys with either a Fyrex nozzle, or mostly the London Branch 3/4 nozzle, 2 men to hang onto it.as we were central city.
Central city brigades really need the larger gear for industrial fires, with our urban brothers lucky to useHP and smaller deliverys.Correct about Hosing in. much caution needed, internal access much better all the best..
Agree with lots of arm chair FF's on this one. Looks like they did a good job considering what they had upon arrival, and i never saw water being put onto the interior guys, just on the outside of the structure, if they did it never messed with the heat venting out of the house. Good Job the the Dept working this one.
Whole lot of arm chair quarterbacking going on here. These guys did a fine job considering what they had upon arrival. Easy interior fire, get inside, pull ceiling and put the fire out. Problem solved. Good to see some departments out there still "get it." And as far as the guy "spraying water inside" are you sure he wasn't putting out burning siding on the outside of the house? That's perfectly acceptable in my book.
That was a difficult fire to extinguish and the guys did well, however, Something that is very common here in NZ, is that within seconds of the men enteringthe property all hell breaks loose, and any fire goes down very quickly, the reason, high pressure fog, or jet if you need it. The main requirement of using it is to lie on the floor and cover all exposed parts or have them steamed. I have seen no evidence yet of brave American Firefighters using this medium.
@brianjacobi good in theory but think of possible victims. you add steam, you toast any victim. here in the states we go right after it. what nozzles do you use? i know alot of depts. here either use task force tips or straight bore nozzles. 15/16 tip.
IMHO - Actually this was a good aggressive interior attack AND stop by this fire company. The video clock which is not accurate since there are credits before the video even starts. It took roughly 3 min and 30 seconds from the time the airbrakes were applied to the engine to the smoke turning white. That’s stretching the hose, making entry, going to the second floor, doing a primary search on the second floor, and possibly accessing the attic by pulling down ceiling.
I'd like to know how many of you "experts" are actually firefighters. Video of first-in unit doesn't start till 35 second mark. Hose in the door at 2:15. Interior attack at 3:25(note the debris flying in left side of the video). Now, the guys on the ground spraying into the window? Bad idea. Ladders in the windows? Modes of egress, not necessarily using them for venting. Unless there was a report of someone inside, I think everything went as well as it could've.
okay, im no fireman but WTF is taking these fat asses so long!? its like they are waiting for it to burn to the ground so they dont have to do anything...fucking pathetic
@TheReticalz no offense dude but as a voli my self id like to see u gear up put a pack on w air quick get a line stretched flaked out right and enter the fire building and hit the fire w a hose that has alot of kick to it and u only got about 15 minits of air depending on ur breathing now as far as the vid they did a ok job personaly as a voli its alittle riskie to go in w a fully involved attic hiting a line outside w inside crews no good not venting right but house was saved.
@TheReticalz Being a voli myself try running in Turn out gear or PPE thats about 35 to 40 pounds plus an SCBA thats also about 40 pounds i only have a problem with how slow they where with charging the line but they made up for it by dousing the fire pretty quick but next time you see a firefighter at the station ask him if you can suit up in PPE and Run down the parking lot and back in it.
Shocking and pathetic initial firefighting strategies in place. No external attack which to me seems the obvious initial option, fireys going into the front door without a live reel, smashing the windows in and causing maximum damage but you didn't attempt to chock or remove the door and security door, your guys in BA took their sweet ass time getting ready and going in and whats with all these ladders and 1 external attack line?? Very lame the fire chief and captain should be ashamed!!
Wow horrible fire fighting you guys suck. All i saw was a bunch of yard breathers that couldnt stretch hose lines. And its called a door chock ever heard of it!!! Also what was the moron doing spraying water through the windows on his guys. and why was the chief knocking out windows? that should have been done by the Truck crew. Folks this is not the way to fight fire.
What the hell are they doing? They should have got the primary out of the way then focused on knocking the roof down some since the roof was almost fully involved. Huge risk of collapse. They were kicking the door when they could have just put the stopper up and been done with it. Plus they could have just taken haligans to the huge windows.
WHy do so many of you guys RUIN a perfectly good fire vid by playing music??? It does nothing for the subject matter. Firefighting is not a GAME or entertainment, except for maybe for week minded players of pocket pool. Who will soon go blind.
this is not a good example of firefighting, they should not have forced entry right away on the first floor, back draft couldve pulled it back through the house. there is only one man on the left hose, and they suck at laying lines. but atleast they didnt catch a truck on fire..
how do most fires start. Assuming they arent caused by people doing dumb things like running space heaters by combustables, overloading extension cords/outlets, cooking or smoking related. Like how does a fire happen in the middle of the night while people are asleep?
@cbatchelor99 i highly doubt a blown fuse can start a house fire. Ive got a blown fuse that i havent changed since 2002 because i dont ever use the rooms that circuit is on.
I'm amazed at how much time was wasted in playing that fire down. They had hoses ready at the start of this video and could have played them onto the roof to slow the fire's progress before going inside. The end gable was okay at the start as was most of the roof but completely gone inside of 5 minutes. Lots of pointless damage!
Does anyone have a deck gun??? Are you seriously sending guys into a house that there's no life safety concerns with? No cars in the driveway ALL the fire is in the attic/roof area... Don't risk a lot to save NOTHING! And we wonder why we get firefighters killed... Thanks for the training video! My department will benefit from this!
@ladder95 So what if there isnt a car in the driveway. Now you just killed the 15-year-old that was home sick from school because you decided to go defensive. Thats an easy interior attack. Im not a fan of dead fireman but you have to be agressive. Thats what sets firefighter out from everyone else. A homeowner can get the same end results using his neighbors garden hose as you get with a defensive attack. And you wonder why people wont even bat an eye when it comes to cutting firefighters.
A couple mistakes, but we've all made our share. Looks like a good stop overall. See my comments to SuperHawkd below if you're actually interested in my thoughts.
Good video. If one person takes something away from it then it has served it's purpose. Weather you agree with the tactics or not give respect to the companies invovled for putting it out there. Most would only post a video that they have gone over with a fine tooth comb to ensure perfection.
@SuperHawkd A deck gun would have pushed it back into the house. When the first front window was broken, no smoke or fire came out. This suggests the fire was contained in the attic. Don't get tricked into thinking a dramatic fire is an unmanageable fire. The interior attack was a good choice. Ladder work was fairly ok, but once a ground ladder is in place it should NEVER be moved. The biggest problem was the exterior attack during interior ops. Big no-no. Very dangerous.
@tlvalle Bingo!! Hit the nail right on the head there boss! Its good to see someone that knows what they are talking about, unlike these monday morning quarterbacks that would go defensive on a trash can fire.
Outside of no one really having a clue about firefighting such as 3 blocks away I am gonna know to have a pac on if Iam a hoseman due to the smoke, but REALLY, you had a truck on scene (thats a ladder truck to you non-firefighters) and you didnt deploy until the fire is about 80% out? Need to question IC on this cause I sure have some after my 32 yrs with San Antonio, we have seen a little fire here!!!!!
@509kidde Yeah because that ladder sure was needed for this fire. Honestly their isnt a need for it. The only time i see it useful is when they are looking for hot spots, someone could be working off the end of the stick peeling back shingles and getting a view from a different angle. They have it there, so use it if you want, but this fire could be handled by engine companies alone. No problem.
I wonder if the guy who made this video that glorified the tragic loss of this persons home and personal property would mind if I played this cheesy soundtrack while his home burnt to the ground? This has nothing to do with training and more to do with a desperate attempt for attention. Im guessing the homeowners didnt think this was a "kick ass" video. Public servants are supposed to be held to a standard of compassion, discrection and to humbly serve without being noticed or thanked. wow......
Thank god I don't live in Joppa MD.... Over 4 min to get the front door knocked in, the one dude is acting like it was his first time with a pack on.... Bunch of wackers....
8/20/2009 was a thursday, time of day,by the looks of the shadows and direction of the sun 930 a.m to 1030 a.m.Likelyhood of anyone being home, unlikely.Search and rescue, nonetheless.Good job guy's,only thing I didnt agree with is the placement of the supplyline and placing a hose stream into a window on the Bravo side with interior crews.I might also question the possibility of the collaspe of the the remaining roof, but thats the call of the O.I.C.Job got done.
The handline didn' t get charged fast enough and the nozzle man needs to learn how to put his mask on and activate his air bottle. Water should have been inside before 2nd truck arrived.Really amatuer.AND YES I know about firefighting.
Not a bad job. Lots of fire upon arrival. Handline moved inside quickly. Ground ladders placed. About the only thing I can see that will remind me my next time is to control that front door (chock, etc.) Stay safe guys, nice work.
@sockettuem... for your information we have to set everythign up a specific way hoses need to be sat down in specific way we need to give our engines time to run before starting right away on the fire we need to make sure our equipment is set to go in the house..... so dont start with this bullshit of this is how to not fight a fire if you can do better then become a firefighter and see what it really takes....
@78forbing Q – Why throw ladders if no roof opps? A - For egress and RIT – attack team is on second floor, should the stairs become unusable, then the windows in the bedrooms are the secondary means of escape – and you want more than less.
You can't just spray water on top of the house and expect the fire to go out. All you badasses who say you could get water on that house in half the time, good for you, but just spraying water onto the house isn't going to do a thing.
Painful to watch. Large volume of fire-bad, vented itself-good, initially confined to attic (from what is visible). Firefighters infatuated with breaking out windows-very bad. Lack of rapid, aggressive interior attack-inexcusable. Yes I wasn't there. Not questioning the firefighters heart or commitment but their skills, training and knowledge are lacking. We owe more to the public we serve and to ourselves.
Wow, Im sure glad these firefighters don't work in my town. Man, how long does it have to take before you start puttin some water on that blaze? Slowwwwwwwwwww is an under-statement!
What's with all the bitch-bitch-bitch about how long it took to flow water?
I'm not a firefighter, but I know one thing for sure. In any hairy situation, you need to figure out exactly what you're dealing with, assess any risks, and then figure out a plan to deal with it. Those who go charging in blindly with guns blazing are usually the first ones to panic when things go wrong.
@PhantomSticky: The chief objective in any fire is search and rescue, protection of exposures, extinguishment and overhaul. You cannot accomplish those goals without water. Any fire allowed to burn in the presence of an abundance of fuel and oxygen will intensify, making rescue, protection and extinguishment more difficult. Having the ability to rapidly knock down a fire is critical to success. It may well be the difference in saving the house or just the foundation.
thats why you prep your gear on the truck and if i get the update that it is a working fire on the way there im already masked up and asoon as my feet hit the ground i turn my bottle on and get my ass in there
@foxlax16 never, NEVER mask up untilyou have too. I,ve got a good video of a guy fumbling with the HUMAT trying to hit a plug. Limits visibility and it only takes a couple seconds to mask up.
@ffmark94 Hahah what? It takes more then a couple seconds to take your helmet off, put your mask on, put your balclava on, put your helmet back on, and check to make sure you have no exposed skin.Even if it did, a couple seconds to a fireman is the difference between life and death.
@sockettuem, for the record I have no idea who this fire department is. However, your comment clearly illustrates how little firefighting experience you have. I see a well advanced fire and yet within a couple of minutes a handline is inside and flowing. Shortly after that, three ground ladders are placed. What did you expect, the fire to go out the instant the Fire Department arrived?
@sockettuem One other thing- those of us that have been in this business long enough understand that the ones who criticize the most are usually the ones that know the least. Give these guys a break, I think they did a pretty good job considering what they had upon arrival.
The dept responding did what they could do under the circumstances of an aggresive fire. Its not a big city dept that could commit all sorts of units.
rescue and tackle should be goin on at same time, this fire should be fought from outside. no water is put on outside for up to 4 minutes, disturbing,
@ENG5INE135 I guess from your name that you have something to do with the fire servive. Possibly an ENGINE cleaner? I have no idea. You certainly are a very rude person. I guess not a firefighter because yhey would not employ someone that rude in a job where you speak to the public. I saw a very similar fire. The fire service in the uk turned up, put an aerial ladder up and squirted loads of water on the fire from above. The fire was out in no time. Easy, not loads of excuses.
... I think they did a fine job, They did it safe took there time, Made sure that had exit routs & personal to get the job done! Nothing wrong with taking a few extra minutes to be safe!! & i don't know what video yall watched but in this one they where putting water on the fire at the 4 minute mark ^
What a crap fire service! They may as well have had a cup of tea and watch it burn out. Turn up, turn hose on, squirt water on the fire. one minute job. When they did get water on it the bloke to the left squirted it into the trees. I am all for giving short sighted people jobs but at least show them where to squirt the water
@brendanbutterworth Ok lets talk about how much of a fireman you arent. they were not "squirting water" it was a self venting atic fire interior crews had to open up the ceiling or if possible gain access to the attic. a 1 1/2 inch attack line has a range of up to 50 feet. when your putting water on the fire your going to find that the water DOES INDEED shoot out the holes the fire has already burned through the roof. so do yourself a favor and make yourself a cup of tea. sit down. and shut up.
Thermal Balance, victims inside? Its planning and cordination. Not GO IN THERE AND GET IT BOYS! Thats how people die. Most of you ignorant morons screaming rude things obviously have not served are even got past basic.
I am a 17 year firefighter and although i am not in the business of criticism, Water should have been on that roof from the engines tank supply as soon as they arrived. Thats how we would do it in the UK and it is then supplemented from a hydrant by the 2nd crew to arrive.
@floydiandream Even though I'm a ff in the US I vote for this strat too, I'm not trying to a be a "monday morning qb" or anything I just agree with the idea of flowing water for the first arriving engine and having the 2nd arriving engine lay in (but of course every fire is different and calls for different priorities) doesn't look like anyone was hurt and the fire was put out it's too late to change how it happened now no matter how many comments anyone posts stay safe guys
I love looking at the comments on these videos by idiots who think they have a clue of what they are taking about.... 15 minutes to get water on it?? Well the video is only 6:21 and looks to me by 4 minutes they had water flowing...
If you have never fought a working fire then shut up... you don't just go rushing in...there are things that have to be done to assure FF safety
This is possibly everything you could do wrong .You have to love these stupid cams at 911 scenes.

Unless there was a report of someone inside, I think everything went as well as it could've.

i really hate when ladders r used to ventilate

TheReticalz 1 month ago
@TheReticalz no offense dude but as a voli my self id like to see u gear up put a pack on w air quick get a line stretched flaked out right and enter the fire building and hit the fire w a hose that has alot of kick to it and u only got about 15 minits of air depending on ur breathing now as far as the vid they did a ok job personaly as a voli its alittle riskie to go in w a fully involved attic hiting a line outside w inside crews no good not venting right but house was saved.
Ieng3ineT 1 month ago

Very lame the fire chief and captain should be ashamed!!
ausptboi81 1 month ago
Wow horrible fire fighting you guys suck. All i saw was a bunch of yard breathers that couldnt stretch hose lines. And its called a door chock ever heard of it!!! Also what was the moron doing spraying water through the windows on his guys. and why was the chief knocking out windows? that should have been done by the Truck crew. Folks this is not the way to fight fire.
FIRE15MAN 1 month ago
What the hell are they doing? They should have got the primary out of the way then focused on knocking the roof down some since the roof was almost fully involved. Huge risk of collapse. They were kicking the door when they could have just put the stopper up and been done with it. Plus they could have just taken haligans to the huge windows.
MendesOO1O 1 month ago
WHy do so many of you guys RUIN a perfectly good fire vid by playing music??? It does nothing for the subject matter. Firefighting is not a GAME or entertainment, except for maybe for week minded players of pocket pool. Who will soon go blind.
aal49 1 month ago 2
this is not a good example of firefighting, they should not have forced entry right away on the first floor, back draft couldve pulled it back through the house. there is only one man on the left hose, and they suck at laying lines. but atleast they didnt catch a truck on fire..
cbatchelor99 1 month ago
how do most fires start. Assuming they arent caused by people doing dumb things like running space heaters by combustables, overloading extension cords/outlets, cooking or smoking related. Like how does a fire happen in the middle of the night while people are asleep?
TheWaynelds 1 month ago
@TheWaynelds bad wiring, blown fuses, etc.
cbatchelor99 1 month ago
@cbatchelor99 i highly doubt a blown fuse can start a house fire. Ive got a blown fuse that i havent changed since 2002 because i dont ever use the rooms that circuit is on.

Poor knock down, should of used the deck gun right off or a ladder truck.

The roof is on fire!
KBendix 1 month ago
I'm amazed at how much time was wasted in playing that fire down. They had hoses ready at the start of this video and could have played them onto the roof to slow the fire's progress before going inside. The end gable was okay at the start as was most of the roof but completely gone inside of 5 minutes. Lots of pointless damage!
PictureHouseCinema 2 months ago
Nothing like being inside and having someone play water into a window.
jshark461 2 months ago
Does anyone have a deck gun??? Are you seriously sending guys into a house that there's no life safety concerns with? No cars in the driveway ALL the fire is in the attic/roof area... Don't risk a lot to save NOTHING! And we wonder why we get firefighters killed... Thanks for the training video! My department will benefit from this!
ladder95 2 months ago
@ladder95 So what if there isnt a car in the driveway. Now you just killed the 15-year-old that was home sick from school because you decided to go defensive. Thats an easy interior attack. Im not a fan of dead fireman but you have to be agressive. Thats what sets firefighter out from everyone else. A homeowner can get the same end results using his neighbors garden hose as you get with a defensive attack. And you wonder why people wont even bat an eye when it comes to cutting firefighters.

Good video. If one person takes something away from it then it has served it's purpose. Weather you agree with the tactics or not give respect to the companies invovled for putting it out there. Most would only post a video that they have gone over with a fine tooth comb to ensure perfection.
firemanbrian13799 2 months ago
Deck Gun??? Then inside!!
SuperHawkd 2 months ago
@SuperHawkd A deck gun would have pushed it back into the house. When the first front window was broken, no smoke or fire came out. This suggests the fire was contained in the attic. Don't get tricked into thinking a dramatic fire is an unmanageable fire. The interior attack was a good choice. Ladder work was fairly ok, but once a ground ladder is in place it should NEVER be moved. The biggest problem was the exterior attack during interior ops. Big no-no. Very dangerous.
tlvalle 2 months ago

509kidde 2 months ago
@509kidde Yeah because that ladder sure was needed for this fire. Honestly their isnt a need for it. The only time i see it useful is when they are looking for hot spots, someone could be working off the end of the stick peeling back shingles and getting a view from a different angle. They have it there, so use it if you want, but this fire could be handled by engine companies alone. No problem.
sfdff39 2 months ago
I wonder if the guy who made this video that glorified the tragic loss of this persons home and personal property would mind if I played this cheesy soundtrack while his home burnt to the ground? This has nothing to do with training and more to do with a desperate attempt for attention. Im guessing the homeowners didnt think this was a "kick ass" video. Public servants are supposed to be held to a standard of compassion, discrection and to humbly serve without being noticed or thanked. wow......

WHY do you throw ladders when your not doing any roof opps? Water goes along way on defensive attack.
78forbing 2 months ago
@78forbing some of the ladders were for breaking the windows for ventilation it looked like
jordaannn91 2 months ago
@78forbing Ground ladders are a safety if you have them at the windows a crew can escape faster in the event of a problem
emt958 2 months ago

Besides, they got the damn fire out didn't they?
PhantomSticky 3 months ago
This has been flagged as spam show
@PhantomSticky: The chief objective in any fire is search and rescue, protection of exposures, extinguishment and overhaul.

What did you expect, the fire to go out the instant the Fire Department arrived?
fdwt994 2 months ago
@sockettuem One other thing- those of us that have been in this business long enough understand that the ones who criticize the most are usually the ones that know the least. Give these guys a break, I think they did a pretty good job considering what they had upon arrival.

What a crap fire service! They may as well have had a cup of tea and watch it burn out. Turn up, turn hose on, squirt water on the fire. one minute job. When they did get water on it the bloke to the left squirted it into the trees. I am all for giving short sighted people jobs but at least show them where to squirt the water
brendanbutterworth 3 months ago
@brendanbutterworth Ok lets talk about how much of a fireman you arent. they were not "squirting water" it was a self venting atic fire interior crews had to open up the ceiling or if possible gain access to the attic. a 1 1/2 inch attack line has a range of up to 50 feet. when your putting water on the fire your going to find that the water DOES INDEED shoot out the holes the fire has already burned through the roof. so do yourself a favor and make yourself a cup of tea. sit down. and shut up.

I am a 17 year firefighter and although i am not in the business of criticism, Water should have been on that roof from the engines tank supply as soon as they arrived. Thats how we would do it in the UK and it is then supplemented from a hydrant by the 2nd crew to arrive.
floydiandream 3 months ago
@floydiandream Even though I'm a ff in the US I vote for this strat too, I'm not trying to a be a "monday morning qb" or anything I just agree with the idea of flowing water for the first arriving engine and having the 2nd arriving engine lay in (but of course every fire is different and calls for different priorities) doesn't look like anyone was hurt and the fire was put out it's too late to change how it happened now no matter how many comments anyone posts stay safe guys
