I am leaving for basic in a few months. I got Hospital Corpsman. And I would really like to be a field medic and go out with the marines but my recruiter said he isn't sure if girls are allowed to. Is that true? and If its not how hard is it to get accepted to be one?

@missdungey Orders right now for women fmtb are a bit scarce. You can still get it if your gpa is high enough in a school (where I am now). You don't get "accepted" to fmtb you get orders for it IF it's open. Good luck in basic.

to get into the HM class for the ASVAB you would have to scoure above a 75, recruiters will tell you to get higher but, its 75 though

Hey, i just spoke to my recruiter and he told me that there is no gurantee that I can get corpsman; even if I qualify for it. He says there has to be openings in the fleet for that rating and to keep an open mind. Please help me, I really would love to be a Devil Doc; is this true?

uhmmm, he said no guarantee? probably it's close for now cause there's a lot of people that wants to be a corpsman. what other rates they're offering you? i joined as undesignated airman cause i wasn't qualified for corpsman, i was undesignated for 2 years then i talk to the detailer that i want to be a corpsman and they give it to me. so yea just keep trying man!

Keep on the recruiter! Most are just lazy and that's why they are recruiters! Keep on them b/c if you haven't noticed, the war in the desert isn't going anywhere!

@dduron Right now it is currently closed so I was told. I have the same goal to be a Devil Doc. Seegetting into C school tog et your FMF pin as a corpsman is easier said than done, so I suggest volunteering to go off and get your surface warfare pin then apply, they will look at you rather than just as an enlisted. @dduron NO. NO. NO. You tell them you wont join unless you can get HM. If they dont have slots dont bother going to MEPS. They told me they didnt have any slots and I told them to send me home, they "found" a spot 2 minutes later.

@dduron. During my time there was a program called DEP (delayed entry program). If the rating that you want is overmanned, you can delay going to Boot Camp until there is a projected availability in that particular rating. I'm not sure if they still have that program in place these days. I'm surprised that at this time when we are fighting 2 wars, that the Corpsman rating would be limiting its acceptance of prospective trainees. I would think that the demand would be increased.

To be honest, I'm actually only 16, and was thinking in on joining the military. But I wanted to do something more than just fight, and I've always had a fascination with medicine so I thought Field Medic would be a good choice. So to answer your question, I'm not going to Corps school, yet.

@ffxip Yep be prepared to do about a year of training from boot to FMTB graduation and in the mean time enjoy little sleep standing watch and studying just as the normals there are a lot of other fun things you will do... just stick with it and you can make it and remember study i just recently graduated from FMTB West Camp Pendleton California i still have buddy's workin 18 hour days allll over again because they didnt study last class oorah and good luck

I'm about to leave for FMTB on the 11th of August. Heard so many different things about it, but it looks like its going to be fun sometimes and crappy at other times. PSI duty at NHCL just sucks so I can't wait

try to go work at the emergency department, you'll get a lot training. i love the er. as far as the training, the only thing that suck for me is waking up 4 am monday through friday, hiking cause i have a bad back, but other than that i enjoyed field med. good luck

What's FMTB really like, anyway? I've heard people talk about how tough the PT is, but your video makes it look pretty casual and relaxed. Is it as difficult as Navy basic training, or is it harder like Marine Corps boot camp?
