well, I played monstrous creature smash in the old codex, and while I can't play it as cheaply as I used to, I'm still doing pretty well on it, and in some ways better, because of more versitility. I use either the swarmlord, or a support hive tyrant depending on how I feel, 3 troop tervigons, 2 trygons, 2 carnifexes, and a harpy. So far, only dark eldar have reliably beaten me, so I'm pretty happy with it.
I use my trygon to come up behind enemy line then I make genestealers with adenal glands come out of the hole and massacere every thing as my hive tyrant pounds the rest of the enemys force till the stealers finish them off.
i played big bugs with two trygons a mawloc two tervigon and a hive tyrant and the grey knights came and instant killed everything a five man squad of grey knights with halberds gets assaulted by a trygon halberd so their initiative six hammerhand psi power(they can cast it in both assault phases) so their strength five they need fives to wound one wound psi test instant killed trygon
@dragonstormx i know this is a really late reply but to a degree yes but also no an example would be my new necrons got lots of tesla weapons which are great against infantry so if a tyranid player uses lots of infantry in large groups then yes but if they use heavier stuff than no it just varies on your army build from what i've seen though i'd say they're still scary as God knows what
From what I've seen looking at the codexs that game out after the Tyranids, they look like they'd have the most trouble with Blood Angels and Grey Knights, since they're both really strong up close and have weapons that are effective against both small and big Nids, and the latter also having whole squads with Force Weapons.
I use 2 carnis in my lists all the time, each with a different loadout, Dakka and CC. One is a distraction the other drops in a spore and noms everything.
The new tyranid's have T6 or lower.... I dont like the facts normal Space marines can wound my carnifex, no need for heavy melee weapons. And Thunderhammers rape Carnifexes no challenge what so ever.
i really liked the old codex for one thing: the guns could be so different at times and basicly you could modify the characteristics of lets say carnifex or warriors there were so many choices like +1 strength or +1 toughness and such making them what makes them nids in my opinion but i must say, the new codex is in all respects better :/
With the recent faq the mawloc has been nerfed by allowing cover saves vs the terror from the deep attack. The Trygon still remains very strong with a S5 assualt 6 shooting attack its ability to effect reserves deployment and can be upgraded to reroll all failed hits and wounds vs any target with a toughness of 6 or less but it will cost about as much as a landraider.
i have built a sorta nidzila list consisting of 1 hive tyrant with talons and heavy venom cannon, 1 cfec with class and stranglethorn, 1 cfex with talons and stranglethorn, 1 trygon prime, 2 squads of gaunts 10 each, 1 zoanthrope, and 5 genestealers and 1 broodlord ive won quite a bit
Fex's are dead for sure. I've tested them a couple times and there are WAY better choices for the pts! (ie: Tyrant guard w/ boneswords or Trygon). Venomthropes aren't bad. Just keep them out of los with a size 3 model (Tervigon or some other MC). Sadly, I feel like this was a bitch move for GW to generate more sales. I agree fex's were overpowered before but now they are 100% more pts with less options. I'm happy I only have 3.
While it's true that the new Tyranid codex is nothing like the old one it is still a good codex. So far I have been winning more and getting more ties and less loses with this new codex... but it all depends on how you play the codex
this guy at mwoodbridge was running a list similar to your wip one. he beat the crap out of me. he was using ymgarals though, but they are friking insane
By the way, the Trygon is useless, one turned up in a game using it's deep strike rule, I just shot it to heck..... 30 quids worth of one dead marine Trygon. Hello Trygon, bye sucker, eat bolter fire.
@jboweruk That's a Mawloc, not a Trygon. Trygons are awesome bio titans, Mawlocs are big raveners that explode on entry, and then their pretty much useless. Don't diss the Trygon!!!
@TheFoilGuy Well I suggest you go back and read the codex then, you'll find the Trygon/Trygon Prime and Mawloc are all one and the same model. The Trygon is not a bio titan, and it is useless.
@jboweruk I have the codex right in front of me and it states that the Trygon and Mawloc are two distinct units with different stats and abilities. And if the Mawloc did have synapse and Containment spines, it wouldn't be quite so worthless now would it?
@TheFoilGuy Believe me, I have a Mawloc, and I've seen both in action, my Mawloc has done far better on average than the Trygon, at least it kills stuff before it dies. The Trygon like I pointed out, popped up and died. Would you rather have a unit that sits there a turn doing not a lot, or one that kills loads as it arrives?
@jboweruk Ooo. I just got back from a 1500 Tau vs you know who fight. I'm sure they were equally awesome, and for Agree to disagree, yes, as a fellow brother of the Hive mind I feel no conflicions between Tyrants should ensue, don't you agree?
@jboweruk - Trygon Prime works very well for me, and I usually deep strike him behind enemy lines, usually behind some soft target or other. Works nicely for me. I'm about to add a second one...
I really appreciate your message. You want me to forget what once was and accept what now is. I'm afraid I can't. There are so many reasons to hate this new book, I couldn't possibly list them all here. Basically GW shit on a cone and try to sell it as chocolate, and I'm not buying.
Pyrovores are awesome in broods of 2-3 and going as suicide units into Melee Monster units. The acid blood will do the damage, and not the flamer. Against Orks and low Iniative units, it's amazing.
this vid is right man, we nids players, and newerish nid players like me, need to realise this. we need to play the new school stuff, not the old stuff.
@damekshopproductions Venomthrope is amazing as a support. Everything within 6" has defensive grenades, a 5+ cover save, and assaulting them forces a Dangerous Terrain test. Just run Termagants around them with Tervigons and you've got a mobile piece of shooty Dangerous Terrain.
i can see trygon's being the biggest fire magnet of all time.... and im hopeing i will be able to get a few games in where fire will be focused on my trygon while a carnifex or 2 can does some damage.
5 TH/SS termies (master crafted as im a salamander player) mounted in a land raider, they assault 3 attacks each, if you give 3 carniflexes 12wounds there dead straight away, yea you get attacks back but i have 2+armour save lol you have no save

but as i said i am doin the assualting. no matter with the armour save ill use 3+ invulnerable save chances are that 2 stay alive jump back in the land raider and go kill all those warriors
personally, i like the new codex, because i like trying to find new combinations and builds for things. Yes, they did nerf the 'fex but...eh... we have trygons now. it could've been ALOT worse.
Besides having completely changed adrenal glands, toxin sacs, and nerfing the fex, I REALLY like the new codex. I think it has alot more options and at least 6 different TYPES of builds instead of just Nidzilla. :D
On the plus side the fact that most of our options are so shitty now is that there's pretty much no excuse not to take more genestealers, even if my opponents dread them.
My current tyrant I bring for high point games is wings, talons, lash/sword, Paroxysm, Psychic Scream, and Old Adversary. Basically, his only job is to survive long enough to feed preferred enemy to my genestealers and other units and debuff/fend off the units that Genies should be afraid of.
I generally would advise a walking tyrant be given a heavy venom cannon to give him "something useful to do" while he walks up.
Hive Commander if you're going to be using a lot of outflankers/striking
Something else to consider is that we don't have living ammunition anymore...no more rerolls to wound...that's too bad, time to find new ways to devourer whole worlds. :-)
yeah carni's are pretty much useless and expensive now, it seems GW wants a trivigon craze so they make buckets of cash. w/e i actually like the new codex more than the old
@treetropred Yes. Yes. A thousand times yes. Genestealers are by far the best unit in the book. Same statline, and for the cost of an old feeder/scuttler you get a genestealer that rerolls 1's to hit, rerolls wounds on T4 or lower, and still gets infiltrate.
ive used vnomthropes effectavly....for monsturous creature cover saves. u wanna shoot at the fex or the thing thats givin it a cover save or the trygon behind u.
@KhannKlan Venomthrope will die horribly, they just can't take the hits with T4 W2. Pretty much any "throw away" shooting will peel off the venomthrope(s) through sheer math, then the carnifexes are 480 points of crap.

The only way i won with this new codex so far was, (against tau)
an all Genestealer list.
x3 squads of ymgarls
and x6 squads of Genestealers,
this new codex is not about monsters anymore, its now about troops,
in my view the monsters are just a little to overpriced to play a standard 1500 point army,
FYI i use to win matches allot with the old codex, now i find the only way to stand a chance is to spam crap.

I love the new 'Nids.
And yeah, I deploy my Trygons. I use primes to synapse the neccessary gargoyle screen.
Also, venomthropes are a huge help to the army, so the rush goes like this-
1st rank- gargoyles
2nd rank- Trygon Prime. Ravener brood goes with- they ARE beasts, and can jump out front to assault/block as needed.
3rd rank- Venomthrope(s)/Tervigon(s)/ 'gants bubble.
Small 10 to 14 'gant squads can hop between ranks to screen/block where you need them, usually between ranks 1 and 2.
