Meaning he could of shot the round without doing that, but the trigger pull and energy it would take to pull the trigger would be much harder ( hence harder to aim the gun while trying to "squeeze" the trigger) so when he pulled the hammer back, (baretta double action) he made the trigger sort of "pull in closer" in simle terms so he barley had to touch the trigger to fire the round ( hence faster shooting and dedication of time towards aiming ;)

the old guy pumped his shotgun when he went into the courtroom, the guy on the left loaded it right before they shot the mafia don, but the guy on the right never loaded his gun. check at 3:39, you can see the hammer isn't even back. still a good movie but thats kinda a hole in the plot

@sarahxferxsure with that model pistol you don't pull the hammer. if you don't pull the hammer, the first shot will just be a bit harder to squeeze off. if you pull the hammer, each trigger pull will feel the same

@sarahxferxsure its a double-action pistol. Meaning he could of shot the round without doing that, but the trigger pull and energy it would take to pull the trigger would be much harder ( hence harder to aim the gun while trying to "squeeze" the trigger) so when he pulled the hammer back, (baretta double action) he made the trigger sort of "pull in closer" in simle terms so he barley had to touch the trigger to fire the round ( hence faster shooting and dedication of time towards aiming ;)

@sarahxferxsure The hammer isn't back then, but if you look later, you hear them both pull the hammer, and if you look in the back you see his thumb move up and pull the hammer. Both the sons pull the hammer just before the shot.

@oBlacK0uTx It's not a plot hole or mistake. As long as there was a round in the chamber, the Beretta he was using will be able to fire. It's just a matter or ~11 lbs of trigger pull vs ~5 lbs.

Even though with a Beretta 92FS you don't have to pull the hammer, watch closely after he says "Et Fili". You can see him cock it back in the backround, it's just hard to catch.
