Wow! Great video! Thank you for posting it! The music was really cool, too! It helped to get you through the monotony of the maze of tunnels in the beginning. However, a narration would've been better, in my humble opinion, when it came down the the actual rooms of the shelter. I was amazed to see stairs leading DOWN of all places! They must've already been several hundred feet underground.
Communists are amazing. Millions around the world have fled every communist country in existence, yet these idiots think Marx and Lenin were doing the people a favor. If you want to be a red, so be it, but the rest of us know you're full of shit. Fuck communism...
Western intelligence knew all about this thing almost from the beginning of construction. It was clear that it was a command and control headquarters for Soviet and NVA use in the event of war in Germany. Think of the waste of resources. They might grow mushrooms in it like they do in parts of the Maginot line.
So ... Who's computers did the DDR use? That phone exchange is huge. I'lll bet bunkers like this held most of the telephone exchanges of the DDR. Keeps the switches safe and makes things easy to tap. Very impressive, very German, very 1970's with all that orange.
I totally believe it. With only a government sector funding the computer sector East German computers would be very very expensive. Did the West Germans restrict computers sales to the East like the US restricted computer sales to the Eastern Bloc?
Too bad I can't post links here but to answer your question- they did not restrict the computer sales at all. The German news magazine Focus even claims that the west german company "Siemens" maintained the computer systems of the east german intelligence service.
Fascinating! Mail me a link if you could. But you know that one can cut both ways. I'm sure Western intl had all kinds of agents working those jobs, and I'm sure the Stasi must have lost a lot of hair with the conflicting need to maintain their computers with the needs of trying to keep them secure. No doubt a lot of good Cold War tales in that little drama. Thanks for the info!
Mentioning phone systems & Nuclear war. The U.S. has set of toll free phone lines called the 800 numbers. Where the usual area code is dial on our phones, one dials the 800 code. I understand that this related to the system for the Strategic Air Command (SAC), which controlled our nuclear bomber fleet (B-52s, etc.). Such a massive set of phone lines was put in there, they couldn't use them all.
These fools couldn't possibly have thought this would keep them safe in nuclear war. Delusion! As the front line of any war, the mere use of theater tactical nukes would have ruined the country. The giant strategic missiles would have turned these things into tombs.
If I was an East German & could have done it, in a war I would have got on a fast jet & headed for South of the equator
The Bunker's purpose was to reassure those in power that their asses were safe because people tend to refuse to fight wars if their death is a certain outcome.
That might be a surprise to the 300 Spartans. It has been said that their is none so free as the man who has nothing left to lose. Of course, it wouldn't have been any of the Quisling finks running East Germany for Russias to do any of the fighting. These things would have only meant they would have died slow deaths by radiation, rather then getting a nice quick vaporization like the troops in the field.
the story of the 300 Spartans is exaggerated, the Greek sent 7000 men to hold of the Persian invasion... besides that I agree with the rest of your comment.
actually they were in case any wmds were used. there would not have been a certain loss, DDR had best army of warsaw pact and plus soviets woulda been rite there if war occured, but yes to assume their asses were safe if wmd attack, if all out war, they all woulda been in moscau except for military commanders would be in the bunkers alongside soviet ones.
The Bunker is Called Malachit is near to the town of Halberstadt. Its closed to everyone at the moment as I believe the owners ran into trouble with the local authorities for leaving waste in the complex. if its open let me know I want to see it (again)
Looks like the command bunkers they were having in case the Soviets crossed the border or in case of a NATO offensive. Wonder where this one is located?
What are they going to do with it? I mean it can be used as a tourist attraction or made into a movie set. Or does the Bundeswher plan to put it to use?
