  • out boards dont have a clutch the prop spins in neutral if it hits some thing it will stop spinning

  • tower of power ha ha ha

  • Skeg Dragger

  • Mannnn......this motor sounds very well taken care of. "nice job"

  • I have a question, what kind of prop is that?

  • I just bought a 16ft 78 blazer with an 80 hp Mercury. Its my first boat and i dont know alot about boating except for when i went on my friends boats to fish. Can you refer me to any good informative sites that i can obtain critical information on proper maintenance and care of my boat/engine?? thanks.

  • i love the sound of a 2 stroke engine!! AWESOME!!

  • Is it ok to put the motor in gear when running like this? ie not in the water? sorry new to boating!

  • those mercs sound like monsters...Cant beat it! =D

    btw: kool 5 blade prop!

  • sounds beast

  • awesome engine start!!!

  • How do you know when a car guy has a mid life crisis? He buys a 1979 glastron carlson CVX16. Mine has that same exact looking Merc80. Its my first boat, and I have a silly question. Is that a 2stroke? Never fired mine yet, got it real cheap. I was told it was an oil injected 2 stroke. I cannot find an oil tank. There is a sight glass in the fuel line and it appears to have a blue hue like premix. Any help would be much appreciated.

  • when testing an outboard motor all you have to do is hook up a hose to it? that doesnt mess it up?

  • man that thing is cold natured!!! nice boat cool merc.

  • if the decals are original its 1982

  • I have the same motor but have no idea what year it is . Do you know what year your motor is? plus nice prop. What kind is it

  • hi, just wanted to ask. what is your idle speed when in the water, i have the same motor running a lazer 20p stainless prop. i have to idle mine at 1500rpm just to put it in foward gear for slow moving.

    thanks

  • Sorry for delay in answer!, 1200rpm!

  • Can't beat a good ol' Merc!

  • thanks for the info, i got it on the water after getting a professional carb cleaning, new impellor and a good look over. sounds fine but as soon as I hit plane the fuel filter cover (rubber) cracked. so i got a new one and we will see by the wknd. this is a big upgrade from my old motor so it should be tones of fun :) -MIke

  • one more thing i wanted to add is im glad to see that your actually having water run though the engine on some other videos they didnt even have that they were running it dry

  • I have to agree with chevytrucklover I also love that sound it really shows and hear the power that this thing has. You know its better then the wussy ass engines their making now. Oh and by the way im a ford guy Ford F-350 Dual to be precise. But Chevy's are good to

  • im picking up a 70hp 3 cylinder merc outboard from 1979-84. any problems i should look for ? ive replaced the impellor and tuned up the carbs. need it to be super reliable

  • did you rebuild the carbs or just adjust them? if you took them off you need to make sure they are synced with the throttle pickup or it will be a pain to start and wont idle right. keep thos inlines cool and dont over advance the spark and they will run forever. ive been told to only run 91 octane and replace the water impellers every other year. a seafoam shock treatment will help decarb your motor also. search youtube for how to do it if you never have before.

  • I love those old two stroke Mercury outboards..nothing beats the sound of those...I just got a 1987 Bass Tracker with a '87 45 horsepower Mercury 4 cylinder in-line its a beast!

  • nice sound!!!!

  • sure is. 21p Hi Five

  • Oh yes,

  • 2 stroke???

  • not tht much smoke wen i dewinterized my 67 evinrude i smoked up my back yard and all of my neighbors

  • i like a mercury motor and the sound this is e great motor

  • ok I have a real question now how fast is your boat and whats the weight of your boat ?? I have a sea ray 175 bowrider and curious if it will push 1850 to2000 lbs ..???

  • Will it pollute the water because I saw exhaust coming out from the prop.

  • Thats why the industry move to 4 stroke. But you know, the amount I use this boat I don't feel that I am harming too much... Better I had an economical 2-stoke that a 350 magnum V8....

  • @wilzchau

    Tree huggers.

  • @Rdoubledog

Man, there are no relationships between tree huggers and me. I'm just looking for the answer of my doubt. I think you've got serious logical problems.

  • Was wondering about the sound when you shifted into forward and reverse it almost sounded as if the prop is hitting .. it does it both ways..are there any marks on either the prop or the skeg??I have the same motor and bought a boat with this motor on it instead of a 115 curous if it will move the boat. Whats your opinion of the motor in general. The sound of it running out of the water reminded me of buying the boat and watching it run in the guys yard just staring at it like a 10 year old

  • Hi, no the prop is not hitting anything! It is a dog clutch, so the noise is from the gearbox & the issue of me not selecting gear quick enough. With these clutches there is no gradual uptake like a car, its either in gear or its not.

I absolutely agree with you, the sound of a 2-stroke outboard is great. These old Merc outboards have pushed our boats along for years, but you know, they just keep going because 2-stroke technology is so basic thats what you want, They are great!

  • I watched the whole thing but I was talking about the begining, before you reved it.

  • Great, sorry to doubt your concentration span, its obviously better than mine! A big outboard engine like this can only start in neutral hence why the prop does not turn, you can rev the engine in neutral or rev in gear. Supposedly it is better to run with the engine loaded, so in gear...

  • The prop's not turning...does the engine have a clutch?

  • Hi, you obviously didn't watch the whole thing.... it is a bit long! But to answer your question yes it does have a clutch otherwise from forward to reverse gears there would be a hell of a mess! Only small 2hp outboards don't have a clutch all others do, and from about 4hp up you would also expect a reverse gear.

  • @insecure53 it has two direct drive gears in behind the prop, one forward and one reverse, a shift collar slides the gear assembly back and forth to engage forward or reverse with the pinion gear hence the slight grinding sound when the prop is engaged

  • @6speeddakota, actually, the forward and reverse gears are constantly engaged with the pinion gear, the prop shaft is splined in the middle with a clutch on it that moves to either engage either the forward or reverse gear, the grinding noise is the clutch slipping not the actual gear teeth, shifting should be done in a smooth, quick manner to reduce the grinding and wear on the clutch dog

  • @insecure53 umm, that's because it's not in gear!! LMAO

  • @gsxrfrk85 I know, I found out that these things have clutches and gears right after I made that comment...two years ago. Before that, I always thought outboard props spun freely (at a slow speed) while idling.

  • Comment removed

  • @insecure53 Yes the motor has a clutch. At 2:12 he puts it in gear and then takes it out of gear a few seconds later

  • I have a Mercury 80 hp that looks like your Merc, It's a belgian model from the 80's with a serial number of 9367662. How do you know what year it actually is?

  • Excellent, my last boat was fletcher, great in rough weather but not quite big enough for what I required. My gearbox went which was unusual. I replaced Solenoid as having difficultly starting, the one that was fitted was incorrect & apparently they usually are so worth checking. I recommend getting it serviced at dealer who work on older merc's, they will set up carb's correctly & engine with be a joy to own, if carb's wrong the 80hp becomes a pig! J

  • Ive just brought a fletcher arrowflyte with one of these engines on the back. Any tips with them anything that goes on them of needs regular attention?

    Cheers

    Tom
