  • Great video, shows how far F1 has come in such a short time, raw racing back then, too many driver aids in later years! Funny when they were testing on the dyno and that bloke leaning on engine with a tie on at 10,000 rpm, never wear a tie while working on an running engine!

  • Ross Brawn was an aerodynamicist?

  • 5 bar? Shit... Sealing that would be crazy, looked like the block was O ringed in the last vid etc etc, wonder what the static comp ratio was and what octane fuel they used? Insane volumetric efficiency

  • @zeroyon223 Not sure exactly what fuel they used but they added toluene in the fuel, and that decreases the chances of knocking ALOT!

  • a very young Ross Brawn!!!

  • how is it possible that the initial engine designer was not present when they first start the engine...???? so many people earning money for nothing!!!!

  • Around 11:00 there using the first version of AIM

  • thanks to then now all cars have engine management. tnx all those pioneers

  • Thumbs up if you want this kind of innovation back in Formula 1.

  • Does that skinny little rollbar even pass the broomstick test? Damn.

    Awesome video, thanks for posting!

  • One of the Lotus/Renault technician disliked this because he was ass kicked before taking a look to the Ford V6 engine

  • million quid on an engine but no heat at the test barn

  • 2.5 bars was half or race boost??!! holy fuck!

  • I just hope 2013 F1 turbos will sound like that Ford in 22:52

  • @SiulF1 its a cosworth not a ford

  • @citydriver Yeah, you're right.

  • Great video. I wouldn't want to work near to an engine running at 10000 rpm. If something goes wrong, you get a piece of con rod or crank case into your body...

  • I thought this was fantastic. Things you just normally have no access too. Thanks. Zero boredom here.

  • It was how it is today: Vehicle electronics still doesn´t work properly.... :)

  • Just awesome. Thanks for posting this

  • Ross Brawn looks about 12 lol

Fantastic vid i enjoyed every second

  • yeah look how young ross brawn is!!

  • on the cutting edge of tech, even e-mail was high tech back then, and therefore hacking and someone stealing there work off the internet. nice overview of how F.I. works but the pains taking mapping process.

  • working near a running engine with a tie on...

  • that was the most beautiful thing i have ever seen

  • Wow. This is awesome. Besides the video being awesome everyone here is smart enough not to post stupid comments.

  • Imagine that...a British car with a wiring issue. Hmm.

I keed, I keed. Really enjoyed this documentary and interesting to see Russ Brawn as a "kid". Still sounds the same, though.

  • -6 degrees and testing. The un-glamorous side of Formula 1. You won't find any celebrities there hamming it up for cameras.

  • this is amazing...the birth of fuel injection by computer control...this is what every car on the road today uses...and here are these engineers making it work on a car with thousands of horsepower...this is history on video...they are literally learning the baby steps to making the engine run...i wish I had found this video sooner...totally amazing piece of engineering history right here...

  • @vettelover2009 I'm not so sure. I think we're looking at a very low budget team going back to basics starting from nothing to try and run an engine with electronic fuel injection which had been used for a number of years on roads cars years earlier.

  • 20:32 Judging a turbo by its sound. 'sounds good'. lol

  • @dayidie2 i love that part haha

  • Awesome video, thanks for the upload

  • And that how it ends? Some dude secretly records info in the back. They might as well have had him laugh manically its so corny

  • "This is the wastegate. Although cutting edge now, you will be able to purchase them on something called a website which will be titled 'eBay', and they will be manufactured by an emerging Chinese economy with low quality materials. Yes, the fortune cookie people."

  • Ross Brawn: Master Typist.

  • wow how times have changed well that was very interesting i sure did enjoy this

  • I just came for 52 minutes and 19 seconds straight.

  • How intensely fascinating.

  • Man.. what a great video. This is what F1 should be all about. Nowadays.... everything has been buttered down. The sport is still competitive but not as cut throat and enticing as back in the days.

  • these videos are gold

  • Ross Brawn is such a boss

  • I prefer the raspy lower rev sound of the turbo F1's, call me crazy!

  • @crayman31 Same here

  • @crayman31 CRAZY! LOL... I know what you mean.

  • "a totally uncompetitive boost setting of only 2.5bar" WOW, "only" 2.5 bar!

  • @alexcimpo They ran up to 5bar (and probably even higher) in qualifying mode, giving them 1200-1500hp

  • @CheapNoize BMW engines were the most powerful, but only 1350hp in qualifying trim.

  • @nitrotrigger Didn't know the exact numbers that's why i posted 1200-1500hp, but there is a clip on here including a Renault turbo F1 car that has 1400hp (don't know if that's made up or anything). Still, 1350hp is almost double of what they have nowadays..

  • does anyone know whats the name of the song heard at 20:04 min.

    Amazing video by the way!!!

  • @aligges Aida - triumphal march

  • Lol 1980's msn messenger.

  • @mikespike502005 1970's !

  • @spoolxexo this was 1984

  • @flipsidedogchop Yeah, you right!

  • @spoolxexo clearly not.. That was the preparation of the Lola THL1 team for 1986's F1 season...

  • 7:56 -a rogue wire that does't go anywhere!

  • thanky you very much...this video is amazing!!

  • Man, between the v-10's of the early 2000's and these turbos the engines of today sound like crap...

  • how did it do

  • (20:45) Pause for a handjob

  • @Rafael849910 rofl

  • "He has learned to judge the turbo by the sound'

    ".......*downshift* sounds good"

  • @RingoFreakingStarr "I don't understand...doesn't everyone do that?"

  • 20:31 sounds good :D

  • sending e-mails in the mid 80's ??? a young aerodynamisist Ross Brawn !! :)

  • @thenicedudejay They were facsimiles.

  • Ross Brawn - fuck me I didn't know he'd been around for that long.

  • 12.00 MSN messenger

  • The computer terminal they are using from 10:20 and on it's a very old DIGITAL vt100 already obsolete by 1985.

  • So cool and fun to watch the development of an engine like this and also Ross Brawn as a youngster :D

    Brilliant video including part 1!

  • Waiting for the monsters to be back in 2014 =)

  • 17'500 views and 0 'dislikes'. Fantastic!

  • OMG they had the internet!!!

  • @aimre This is gold! Internet in the 80's - I wonder what protocol they were using?

  • @47:16 Senna!

  • Ross Brawn! HOLY MOLY! Old bas...d))

Awesome video, it's so weird in comparison with what we see now! These people were true fans of F1, now it's all about f...g business, not a sport anymore!

  • Ross Brawn! HOLY MOLY! Old bastard))

Awesome video, it's so weird in comparison with what we see now! These people were true fans of F1, now it's all about f...g business, not a sport anymore!

  • Great post! Thanks!

  • LOOOL "sounds good"

  • Thanks to much to post!

  • Those computers bring back the memories!

  • quit secure.... hmmmmmm not at that time. ln -s /etc/passwd /etc/motd usually fixed most problems :D

  • 30 people want to give Ross Brawn a wedgie and steal his lunch money.

  • Top video!

  • Email in 1984????

    10:30

  • @Howitzer909 It was 1986.

  • @Howitzer909 Yep. VAX/VMS Mail. VAX/VMS is now OpenVMS and has gone from a general-purpose system to something more commonly found in extremely high-availability and high-security systems - banks, stock exchanges, that kind of thing. The real-time chat program is called PHONE, or PHO for short. I still play around with it once in a while.

  • @toresbe This is fascinating this old terminal. Is this a mainframe type terminal? I work in a bank and they still use mainframes, albeit using terminal emulators on pcs now.

  • excellent. Really enjoyed this. Bored the hell out of my GF though :)

  • @cbireland

mines asleep right now and i'm loving this movie...

  • Nicely done. Very interesting. Thanks for uploading.
