One of the best shows in television history. Then and Now. I enjoyed the movie remake. A fine film with impressive cast. But, there was/ is something about David Janssen's performance that brought a special quality to the show which still cannot be duplicated. He is and will always be, in my mind, THE FUGITIVE.
Sorry, didn't mean to sound ignorant below with "directoring".I did first consider "direction"but wanted to convey al the different individual directors, and somehow this came out - oops.
Being a Kenton fan early in my life I was well aware that Pete Rugolo was responsible for the "Fugitive" anthem and the thematic offshoots throughout an episode. What I didn't realize until recently(with the purchase of another favorite series of mine,"The Twilight Zone"),was the extent of the use of stock music tracks that were used.
To complete my thought - the series was brilliant in so many respects...The suspense of Gerard almost nabbing Kimble on any given episode;the disappointment of Kimble failing to capture Fred Johnson(the one-armed man)in another;quite apart from the chase aspect the fine episodes that were stories independent almost and dramatic in their own right;excellent lead and supporting acting;great directoring, and a music score from Pete Rugolo to die for.I'm wting one more post on the music...
To devroshart - I always was and always will be a huge fan of this show.My mother used to let me stay up one night a week(Tuesdays @ 9PM to 10PM CST)to watch this ABC showas well.."Peyton Place"with Dorothy Malone,Mia Farrow,Ryan O'Neal,et.al.preceded it at 8:30PM CST.I believe PP came on again on Thursday at the same time.Though the movie was well done(it premiered at the Coronet in San Francisco, while I was running that theatre),the movie could never match the TV series suspense.
We share the same memory, having caught the first Season in summer reruns, my parents also let me stay up one night a week during the school year. I would catch the closing theme to Peyton Place, which I still fell nostalgic when I hear it, waiting for Dr. Kimble. Decades later, I saw Mia Farrow in the audience of a Broadway show, and immediately thought of those Tuesday nights when I'd see her young face in previews for the next episode of PP.
I am NOT amazed by all the positive comments here.
DAVID JANSSEN was "THE FUGITIVE", and nothing can ever replicate it or even come close. I co-authored "DAVID JANSSEN-MY FUGITIVE" with his first wife, Ellie. I have been inspired now to write "DAVID JANSSEN-CONFIDENTIAL-Our Conversations" (working title). Thank you DEVROSHART for this beautiful Tribute to a great actor, a great man and a good friend.
I just read your post - are you currently working on the book? I would be so happy to know that there will be new material about David Janssen. I started watching The Fugitive from the pilot episode - I was eleven years old, and fell instantly in love with him. I felt that only I could understand his loneliness and pain. I also thought he was the sexiest, most gorgeous man I ever saw, and all these years later, I still think so. Seeing him makes me smile, but with sadness.
I was 6 when I started following this series, it was the very first drama series I'd gotten "hooked" on. No one else could have made Dr. Richard Kimble and Lt. Gerard more endearing, compelling and impacting as did David Janssen and Barry Morse. IMO, the movie (w/Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones) did not do the original series any justice. So grateful to have the entire series in my home video library, truly one of the greatest TV dramatic series in history. This is how great TV shows are made.
If any other actor other than David Janssen had been cast for this show it wouldn't have been the hugh cult hit that it is today. He was truly awesome. A great show and a great tribute.
This is a wonderful tribute to an absolutely fabulous series. Mr. Janssen was born to play this role. I watched "The Fugitive" during its oringinal run and it is just as fresh today as when it first aired. The lack of quality of today's shows is alarmingly apparent when compared to it and others produced during that era.
THE BEST theme song for a TV series......loved his character....David Janssen was perfectly cast in the role of his life. I never missed one episode of this show.....was hopelessly in love with Richard Kimble....thanks so much for putting this video together!!!
Without David Janssen's characterization The Fugitive wouldn't be such a landmark--yes, the writing, editing, cinematography and music is top notch--but it is Kimble, with that sheepish look, that breaks me down every time. When he picks up the kitten, that's how the audience feels about him. It appeals to the most wonderful instinct humans are capable of. And then, add the terror I think all of us Americans share (more so today) --that our system can--and does--fail us.
David Janssen and Dr. Kimble was one of those perfect marriages of actor and role, and for better or worse, Janssen never seemed as good, imo, in any other role, not that Janssen wasn't a capable actor, just that Kimble was a once in a lifetime role.
@devroshart David Janssen was great in this role, much better than Harrison Ford in the film version. . However I have to say I did love David Janssen in Harry O. Such a well rounded character, sad, jaded, dry, witty, generous and an all round nice bloke. He portrayed this role so well in spite of Howard Rodham,s (the series creator) reservations about him. He felt he was too elegant for the part! Just goes to show how good he was. Shame we can't see him again in this wonderful series.
@devroshart , I posed a similar question about Brad Davis to a famous Hollywood star and he said that every actor has one really good role inside of them and that every once in a while the two of them meet.
@bluesun267 Outstanding post--beautifully expressed. I've heard it said that "The Fugitive" was, at its best, "Shakespeare on television." Quite simply, it was the greatest dramatic series in the history of American televison--it will never be duplicated!!
@bluesun267 Yes he certainly drew us in every week tugging at the heartstrings, hoping he'd escape and find the one armed man. I can't remember the stories, it's over forty years since I saw it but what I do remember is the emotion. It still gets me when I hear the music and see those clips. all the more poignant with David Janssen dying so young. We'll never see the like of this series again, look at the trash they keep throwing out now. I just wish they'd release the European DVD format!
That was lovely. It was an amazing TV series. I don't think another show will ever hold us in such suspense for so long again.
What an amazing actor too. We loved that character, we loved him. He kept us hoping and praying he'd be acquitted for four years. I was eighteen when I first watched this. Hard to believe it's forty seven years since The Fugitive first aired and almost thirty years since he died. Bless him! He was brilliant.
I discovered The Fugitive at my local library a couple weeks ago,and just finished watching the first season.Such an amazing show-David Janssen was an incredible actor.
I can tell by the way you put this together, that you must be a huge Fugitive fan like myself. You were probably lucky enough to see this in the 60's. I first saw this when I was 15 in 1990 on A&E, and have been hooked ever since.
Yep, I started watching when I was 9, in the summer of 1964. My parents let me stay up late one school night a week so I could keep watching when the new season started.
Thanks. My other account DHart007 was suspended, I got too many copyright violations. I don't save my videos on my PC after I post them. I found this one posted on a spanish speaking website and reposted it here.
I remember when David Janssen played Richard Diamond back in the 1950's..I still watch Richard Diamond those DVD's

"The Fugitive" was truly one of the very best TV series of all time.
I was 18 when I got hooked on it, when it was being shown daily on A&E. My Mom was a huge fan during its original run in the '60s.
David Janssen was simply MADE for that show, and to be Dr. Richard Kimble.
