As far as I know, slavery was used an alternative to killing prisoners of war. Not a bad trade-off, from my perspective.

The Word of God *is* static - but much of it is directed at a particular people in a particular time. I don't see God telling us to stone our sons to death these days.

"Nothing" is applicable? Only if you read things your way, I suppose.  "Love your neighbor as yourself"? How about commandments 5-10 (I'll leave off the first few, since they pertain to faith)?

Honestly I don't know how to respond to that. You mean to tell me child rape was okay by god approx 5k years ago but not today. Why did god need a "new" testament, isn't the word of god good enough. Not to mention that there is no way Moses, Joshua et al wrote these books. They were composed hundreds of years after the events that they describe. And where is god's New New Testament for our times.

Yes and yes. I've read it as a child in christian school and I've read it cover to cover as an adult. I've studied and read some of it in its original language. I've found enough inconsistencies on my own to understand the difference between "God-breathed" and "God written" - I don't think God would have gotten the part about rabbits having cloven hooves wrong. That doesn't make the *entire* work irrelevant, however, and to say that it does is as dogmatic as the assertion that dinosaur bones are a test of our faith.

Not exactly what modern people think of when you talk about "genital mutilation" - it's such a common practice that it's all but lost it's biblical meaning, and is certainly not a "crime"

I re-read it and obviously this was written for a time when there was no refrigeration. I have eaten baby camel meat in the Middle East and I assure you it was delicious and I am not going to hell (at least not for that). The Bible talks about things happening (and says that God told people to perform those acts) that are considered barbaric by today's standards. I *believe* God works with people where they are, and although the Bible was written, translated, and interpreted by fallible humans, it contains God's intent for us.
