  • My God, it's been over 20 years! Been searching for this song and video. Thanks!

  • I'll never forget this song - it was playing on the car radio when I finally lost my cherry. I won't ever forget her either....

  • THANK YOU!

I will remember where I was and who I was with when I 1st heard this song--forever.

  • Best 80's band! Will never forget seeing them live! Wish they would reunite!

  • this was my fave song! ......when on hols i remember this in the car with my mum n dad......course my dad like sister of mercy

  • @0797000 Sister of Mercy was cool! ;)

  • had this lp on my walkman when i was 13 in 1984...miss them days

  • @decka71 same , dont think kids today , ihave two will know what a sony walkman is ,,, today its all APPLE ,,,,,

  • i love a bi-level haircut x

  • I miss the 80's soo much :'(

  • @LyndaHudson The 80's were more fun than a barrel of monkey's. To be young (in my 20s!) during that decade was to have the world at your feet. Damn, those were great times!

  • @arkady714 Yes, you hit it on the head. I don't think we will ever be able to recapture the FUN we had then !

  • @LyndaHudson I had a "bi-level" haircut, an earring in my left ear...wore a Ralph Lauren oxford shirt over a tank-top undershirt, chinos or 501's, topsiders...along with my trusty Swatch to keep the time.

  • @arkady714 I had a bi-level haircut too, and I LOVED my topsiders ( I had a brown pair and a navy blue pair), and a Swatch watch !

  • @arkady714 Oh, man! Please tell me you also wore a designer head band (a la Olivia Newton John) and one long earring dangling from the left ear, extra, of course, due to your double piercing! Life may be very different today, but there was a small window (from about 1981 to 1988) when I was actually cool.

  • @LyndaHudson Yeah, me too!! I definitely miss those good times! :(

  • Recreating the Bass tones on this is a trip.

  • Hmm....let you know what I think....hmm....well if it's 80s then it's awesome as far as I'm concerned!! I love 80s music.....I sure come up with a scren name that reflects my love for the 80s....hey wait a minute....I already did!! LOL!

  • I work at Big W, this is on at least 3 times a day.

  • @Eelesie i know, right? I used to hate it.

  • @AllHailVenom Me to, the harmonica sounded horrible over the speakers.

  • It is so great to hear I am not the only one missing the sounds and looksof the 80's! The sounds carried more melody than anything that has been churned out within the last 20 years! The vocals, the arrangements and vibe is something that cannot be matched!

  • Brilliant! Forgot how much I loved this song and TT back in the day. Thinking I still like both.

  • Love it, I'm stuck in the 80s!

  • @seasquirt08 Like yourself I too, am stuck there but I will say this much though, tis better then than the 70s-60s-50s!!!!

  • reminds me of being a senior in high school and having my first apartment

  • from Rose Rouse officiall THOMPSON TWINS bio:Not only the Thompson Twins changed their tunes they have also obtained yearly renewable lease on that room at the top of the pop charts.Into The Gap the Thompson Twins second album as a three piece.sold a stunning 800,000 copies in britain alone in 1984!surprisingly they sold more albums here than either Culture Club or Duran Duran. In the company of these, and the likes Frankie and Wham!the Thompson Twins are misfits!

  • Their live version of this song was the best!!!

  • Loving it!!!

  • OMG...I'm back to my teen age... sigh...

  • I used to love dancing to this song at my first 18 and over dance club. Its like I dont even get the urge to listen to todays music. Just seems that the vibe isnt there like it used to be in the 80s.

  • This was probably my fave song by the Twins...

  • I was into Ozzy, Dio, Crue, Van Halen, etc, etc, back when this song came out on MTV and I thought "what a bunch of fags". Funny that 27 years later, I now think it's actually pretty cool. I'm definitely getting old.

  • I loved this stuff when it came out in '84 and love it even more now! Great music and video! Thanks for posting!

  • Amazing!

    What happened to music?

  • One of the Kiwi's (NZ's) best bands ever!!.....I remember listening to this ALBUM for the first time.......couldn't stop playing it over and over......it's an 80's classic.

  • @hostmasta English band son

  • @hostmasta Huh? Thought they were British!

  • @hostmasta They were English. Tom and Alannah moved to New Zealand and lived there for several years (though they both returned to Britain later). Apparently this led to the common belief that they were a New Zealand band.

  • @kittyprydekissme I always knew they were British,(Im Australian) British bands commonly had a black guy and a ginger, I always find that contrast aesthetically interesting

  • @kittyprydekissme Alannah was originally from NZ then moved to England. That is probably part of the reason they moved there for awhile....

  • That's some serious new wave hair to maintain in a jail. I guess if they're housing women and men in the same cell, it's not your traditional correctional facility anyway...

  • I played "Into the Gap" on cassette so much it wore out. Love this song. Thompson Twins are the best.

  • 25 dislikes...me thinks it's one person trolling all the 80s videos and hitting dislike on every single one of them 25 times..get over yourself whoever you are...prolly some kid.

  • They gave the most awesome concert in 1984 in New Orleans. I'll never forget it.

  • Is it just me, or does this song remind anyone of 'Feel Good All Over' by the Dave Clark Five? Good song anyway. I grew up listening to the Twins back in the 80s.

  • I am HUGE 80's fan! I love the T.T's!

I love how funny this video is!-DancinDarla

  • IF I EVER GET MARRIED AGAIN,,,,,THIS WILL BE THE SONG WE DANCE TO AS MAN & WIFE,,,,,THEN AGAIN,,,, HOLD ME NOW IS A STRONG CONTENDER .....

  • I saw them and Berlin circa 1984 in Austin. Wow!

  • @redhed6971 I saw that tour...so much ENERGY! I will never forget it.

  • this is my favorite thompson twins song and I think it's the breaking rock part but they were really awesome.

  • For the life of me, I don't understand why they decided not to put this song on their greatest hits album!

  • @venuspluto67 i was real young when this tune came out and i always ask my elder brother whos in his early 40;s the question now. its a clas tune

  • this song is so classic like the title it takes me up oh ho it takes me to e higher ground now i never wanna come back down

  • Loved the 80"s!!! Friday night videos! spiked hair! vanns, down suspenders, parachute pants and the birth of MTV!!! 1984 was one of the best years of my life! Brat pack movies! Thank god I was a teenager then!

  • luve this song absloute classic classic song make me feel old now

  • Oh how the little children of Stonehenge did dance.

  • this is a rare vid from the thompson twins, great post!! :-)

  • I Worked in a Top 40 Radio Station in the 80's this is one band that stays in my mind...

  • one of the best bands of the 80s

  • Wonderful 80's music. They make 'em like this anymore today. Sigh....

  • Still LOVE The Thompson Twins ! Which one is the "twin" ?

  • @peter97624 lol, the band name, is named after the two detectives named thompson and thompson from the comic, The Adventures of Tintin.

  • @peter97624 ... Thompson Twins is named after the characters in the Tintin books. They were the two moustached men in bowler hats !!!! Google it - you will see what I mean.

    Thanks....

  • I often think of this as the "proletariat love anthem"

  • Damn, the 80s had so much creativity in pop music.=! These days it's all so generic and soul less. What has happaned???

  • @Rentaghost76

Don`t worry. Go to my channel and you will have the best ´80´s music before you!!!

    Thanks....

  • top tune was spinning waltzer on the fair when this was released

  • "Filmed entirely outdoors"? Even the scenes where they're in a jail cell?

    Mind-blowing.

  • I love this song so so much! It reminds me of the day my fave team Nottingham Forest won promotion back to the Championship as Radio Nottingham played this at the end of their programme!

  • thanks again tabstarkin for uploading brill music

  • just brilliant..

  • 5 stars

  • No, Joe is alive and well and living in L.A. working in the field of hypnotherapy.

  • love between the singer and allanah broke the band apart

  • before depeche mode, thompson twins were in...they were one of the greatest electronic new wave band ever...

  • I thought Dephche Mode came before The thompson twins. And do you know where Tom is nowadays I heard he was in New Zealand.

  • @Forestamtul

He was in NZ but he's now moved to France recently. Just released new material in 2009.

  • thanks for your kind reply. It doesnt seem over 25 yrs ago only yesterday.

  • I wish this would have got more attention here in the states back in the day. What a great song!!!

  • Brings me back to my youth - love this song

  • i LOOOOOVE this song it is so perfect in lyrics and music.

  • I remember seeing them in 1984 in the USA.....they were great

  • love it ..........

  • BLOODY GOOD SONG!!

  • this song so differant than there usual hits, and a bases loaded homerun. Tabstarkin thank you, I hope some of these fans were also able to see TT in live as I did with OMD and Universal Amphitheater. Both bands sounded great live, must admit this song the main reason i went-the crowd singing along shows how popular this song was to there fans. TAB-thanks again

  • Oh, how I miss the 80's. Great music & great music videos.

  • bought 10 inch vinyl of this in France in 1983.brilliant record then and stil is

  • Only Thompson Twins could pull off a song like this. Great melody and hook and with their usual touch of humor.

This wasn't a major hit in the States, but I still love it after 25 years. Yikes, I am old. :)

  • Pues una canción identificada más y ésta es de mi casete 65. Una buena rola.

  • Very awesome! I wish songs could be so hopeful and upbeat these days! Reminds me of gradeschool and listening to my mom's copy of "Into The Gap" on cassette! Thanks for this!

  • a personal favourite of mine since early 1985....the song gives me great memories of 7th grade......music hasn't been this great since then.....

  • I know what it means to work hard on machines...... My get home from work song

  • GREAT SOUND !

    Joy,

  • No really....

  • thanks, was looking for some of the videos of them on here...sounds so different from their record of into the gap i have though...:-)

  • Really? How does the version on your sound?

  • 9-5 ?

  • Fantastic song, even though i was into mad raw brash punk rock back then when it came out!

I didnt dislike it but i love it now!

    regards, ecopunk xXx

  • This song reminds me of a girl I fancied when I was 14. It took me months to pluck up the courage to ask her out and then when I finally did, she said no....what a bitch.

    Great song though!

  • As I was reading your comment my facial expression changed a bunch a times.

"This song reminds me of a girl I fancied when I was 14" *smiling*

"when I finally did, she said no" *frowns*

"What a bitch" *look of surprisement*

    "Great song though!" *smile again*

  • hahahahaha awesome

  • that's awful, what a bitch lol, bet she wishes she said yes now. she prob stuck with some guy that's a looser and has 3 kids. a girl i really liked basically did the same to me.I've seen her since and ya can tel she likes me. oh well she wouldn't have a chance now ;) strange that..... great song

  • The Thompson Twins were awesome. And then came Close to The Bone...

  • British church country song!!!!love the bass!

  • Fantastic song. They were a great group.

  • I don't remember this one, but it's really good. . .the song probably would have seemed too mellow to me back when it debuted. Now I'm mature 'nuff to appreciate it!!

  • tompson twins you ar my favourite group in 80'S ILOVE YOU

  • many thanks for putting such a classic on. 80s still kick

  • The Thompson Twins were great, they did some brilliant tunes

  • "I believe in today" - I ike this lyric

  • "I know what it means to work hard on machines" kinda defines life for a lot of people. A severely under appreciated band.

  • I agree with both statements. :-)

  • Its the labour of love so please dont ask me why.............You take me up to the higher ground..

  • It was one of my favourites of them!Great, thanks!Greetings from Natassa :-)))

  • JDRoberto, that is so interesting. A riot at a Talking Heads concert? Violent and very scary? Wish you'd write about that somewhere I'd find it to read. I coulda seen Thompson Twins and OMD circa 1984... wish I had appreciated more how transitory that aesthetic would prove to be. They had lots of heart, like a John Hughes movie. Beaux Arts.

  • Good song by them that I never heard of.

  • where were you eighties!?

  • Well when this song came out I was playing with my Trasnformers and He-man toys ....I remember the most exposed song "Hold me now" from the past.

  • hope in your eyes

  • I think this vid is great. 1st saw it at the Boat House in Austin, Texas.

  • I love Tom Bailey's face.

    There. I said it.

  • Today's kids are angry. Sad and angry music they listen to. There was angry musisc then too but it wasnt promoted.

I mean how could we have been angry when we listened to gleeful music played by people that dressed like clowns...yes it's cool style but looking now its beautifuly clownish.

  • The breadth and depth of great music produced in the 80's is unchallenged by any other decade.

  • I loved it when they 'sang' this song on "Solid Gold" - before that, I always thought Tom Bailey was playing a harmonica on the song! It should have charted higher than #41 though!

  • This entire album is amazing, even the non singles. Amazing band!

  • Not many does extended well. Thompson Twins is the exception.

  • Thanks for posting, nothing but memories associated to this one...

  • reminds me of my school daze in the 80's the best years ever, smoking in the bike sheds & drinking merrydown cider on a friday night in Atherton park. & my first shag as well !

  • makes me feel good to know my xtended bonus b side remixes r still intact 4 into the gap and side kicks

  • the extended version of You Take Me Up is even better with the instrumental bit being pure brilliance. In fact, most of TT's extended versions were fantastic.

  • Good stuff from the 80's.They were cool!

  • and a great times, the fabulous 80s!!!!

  • this song makes me high.

  • music today sux so bad! im an 80s trashbag born in the wrong time

  • ur not alone!!!!

  • They define the 80s to me. In NYC we dressed like TT lol!

  • The lead singer's name is Thom Bailey, I believe. The girl is Alannah Currie (? spelling). The other dude left the group and I'm sorry, can't remenber his name. They are legendary..

    All the best.

  • Thank you!

  • what a great song and great band wish tey were still around never mind we still have the god GARY NUMAN

  • Lovely memories

  • I posted a comment earlier, but I wanted to add about the Thompson Twins and the 80's generally, was music and their ownw style. You didn't have to look like a star to become a star unlike now where we have the Britney Spears who can't sing at all and other "artists" who can't sing but hey they are "hot.* The 80's was about the music.

  • They have such a distinct melody 'feel' and music that you will instantly know its them...cos no one other band sound anywhere close to them. The clever use of Tabla percusssion did help add colors to the music! They are really one of a kind!

  • So many great memories. I'm old now and have kids that are the age I was in the early 80s. I forced them to listen to the TTwins and they liked it but went right back to their Linkin Park:)

  • Are they named after the twins in the Tintin books?

  • Really ha ha I"m 16 and The Thompson Twins are my second favorite band! Tears for fears being my first! Billy Idol the third. Long live the 80s!!!

  • me 2 except same order with the police at the top and men at work instead of billy idol
