generally the deeper the voice (both in terms of range and vocal weight) the longer the career. coloratura sopranos are usually done by 50, but contraltos and basses can keep singing well into their 80s =D
Apart from her lisp, Podles is once again in superb form and understands what she sings. The way she pronounces the words is, yes Mr. Scholl, dazzling and spooky. A role model for all singers on this planet. Altona, I agree, Klytämnestra is not for ageing sopranos.
I attended one of these performances, one of the best COC performances in recent years, in my opinion. Being unfamiliar with the opera at the time, I was quite shocked.
I don't think Bullock's voice records well, I remember her voice (& performance) being quite effective during this performance. She got the standing ovation, not Podles. Podles's voice is also even more glowing in person.
@VivaMariaCallas Obviously Podles' voice is not for everyone . The average opera-goer with a broomstick in the butt would find it too dark or violent I assume.. To me she's clearly one of the best singers ever recorded and even better on stage.
We can only assume how much Podles dominated the whole production. Bullock sounds rather weak whilst Podles, in clear German, gives a powerful and astounding performance. And once again: Klytämnestra is NOT a role for old sopranos!
Susan Bullock has been very dissapointing as Elektra. I have yet to hear a performance of Elektra from her that was powerful. Her perfomance at the Met last month was rather lackluster and did not garner the best reviews.
I agree with you with the exception of Astrid Varnay (although in my opinion she was really more of a mezzo to begin with and during her late career was practically contralto). this role belongs in the hands of a deep, smoky contralto. sopranos and even mezzos just aren't dark and sinister enough for a role like this
Is this recording available? could you please upload more, at least finish the scene?

This is great! Bullock was one of the worst Elektras I have ever heard but Podles is perfect!
