I got a little emotional when you talked about writing from the heart. :,) It also made me think of authors like Roald Dahl and Neil Gaiman. I'm pretty sure Neil Gaiman has a publisher idk? Yeah but even if both of them did that's not really the point. You can tell that they have written very creative stories, and put out what's in the heart rather than product for money. They obviously worked very hard and put a lot of effort into their novels.
I mean, to me personally writing a book is frighteningly similar to having and raising a child. Of course that doesn't mean you shouldn't let people critisize it but still, it's an odd and yet wonderful experience. When one feels like mama/papa bear and someone comes close and analyzes your cubs, it can be kind of scary. It may seem like a weird comparison but I think it's true. ;]
Getting a publisher can really suck because sometimes they will change your work and even change the title of your novel and take out whole chapters because they personally didn't like it. They will make you or break you, so if you insist on having a publisher get someone you can trust. Who knows, maybe they'll be your best friend or something. lol Just someone you find nice and not too controlling. @darrylsloan Mate, I can't get enough of watching this video. You are a pioneer and a true inspiration. Everything you said in this video is so, so right. Especially the bit about your readers being the judge. Yes, who the hell are the editors in publishing houses to judge our work! I am hoping that with e-books becoming more and more popular, in the next fifty years, publishers will eat dust. Then they will have to beg us authors to publish our work.
Awesome video. I'm trying to be a comedian / comedy writer I wrote my first book already I'm going to self publish because I'm an unknown writer and I take a lot of chances with my humor. I don't think that publishers would even give me a chance to sell my book ( or they'd change too much of it ). So this video is one of the few things I found encouraging. :)
Thank you so much, thankyou! I had resentment for the industry and the way it is and I couldnt figure out what exactly is wrong with literature I've been seeing on the shelves today. You shed a lot of light, I am a University student and haven't come across such valuable insight on this subject, and I'm in my final year!
Thank you for this video. It is uplifting. As a reader, I have grown tired of the major 5 or so publishers deciding for me what I should like. As an author, it's a long frustrating road to publication with a major house. Your take on things is so refreshing.
I'm trying to self-publish my own novel right now and I got most of the bugs worked out, but I'm currently having a lot of trouble formatting it. How do you format your books? Is there a particular program you use or do you pay someone to do that for you? Thanks. :)
No im not the type that comments on videos, but you sir have blown my mind away. I hope you make a video to assist young writers on the process of self publishing, helpful tips on marketing it and etc thank you!
@darrylsloan Mate, fantastic video. You are truly an inspiration. I have written a very controversial book. It is in the final stages of editing and research. I suspect a lot of publishers will knock it back because it is far too controversial. So I may be looking down the barrel of self publishing. Tell me, does using a publicist work? What does work? I would appreciate any advice you could give me. Thanks mate.
@cameronmoj Thank you for the kind words. I've never had a publicist, so I've had to be my own. These days I actually get most of my sales through my YouTube (semi-)popularity. I tack an advert for the book onto the end of every video. Good luck with your book.
Thanks for the great encouragement on self-publishing. I've been wanting to combine a bunch of short stories into a large novel and self-publish it. How do you market the book? Is it solely by word of mouth, Amazon.com reviews, or do you hire someone? Thanks...
It takes 100 years for some truths and truisms to present themselves. Courage cometh with knowledge. Killing idiots called Hoover, Eisenhower, Nixon, won't stymie anybody's population-decimating agenda. These are our little pigs and their piglets and their testes and knobs and delicious feet, knuckles and blood...the plenty-good surprises to make linoleum, epoxy-resin and pudding...
My 96-page paperback book is "Along the Far Climb Down." It is published by Whizzo-Fine Press. It can be ordered through Polyester Books 330 Brunswick St. Fitzroy, Victoria Australia 3065
Thank you for posting this video you are a truly down to earth individual. I agree with you a lot of self published books will be better than a published book which is just conforming to ideas of other books which is really futile. I am sure your books will be good you come across as being a very deep individual I will considering reading your books. Oh yes the bit in the middle when you made a fair valid point about a band having there own record label made me laugh.
Cream rises to the top, so keep churning. Keep writing. Self publishing is a nice thought, success often boils down to promote/marketing. So you see, there is this loop that is reality. Publishing houses know the market but don't always do the best marketing. If you can market, you might be able to bring an audience to the publisher. In the end, the best product doesn't always succeed. It all takes time, energy, passion and money to be a commercial success if that's what you need/want.
great video dude, thanks for putting it out there! i watched the whole thing, its great your supporting your peers and enjoying fulfilment in your success.
I'm sold on the idea of self-publishing because I have an ereader and often download books from SmashWords, a self epublishing site. I've read few duds and some really good books. The one I've just finished was great for an entertaining afternoon: a regency romance better than most of Heyer's work.
Wow...reading over the comments I really am wondering if I should just tell the agents who are interested "Thank you so much, but i've really got to try this self publishign thing". But that's crazy! No one does that.
I'm not trying to be rich (though that would be nice of course) but I would like to make a living wage. Do you think i should go self-pub even if i have a good chance of being taken up by an agent?
@WildNice From what I've read about self-publishing, once the start-up costs are taken into account, you earn more per book sold than from a publisher. If you go the trad route you'll get 10% max of the cover price, a percentage of which you pay to an agent. If you self publish, all the profits are yours or are ploughed into the costs of printing the next book. Authors rarely make a fortune. PS I'm sure Darryl will give you better advice.
@muskndusk Thank you for your input and advice. Yeah, i've been heavily researching self-publishing vs. traditional pub and the more i read about it, the more working for a traditional publisher sounds like a bad idea. Unless your book is a BLOCKBUSTER/BESTSELLER you're not going to be making hardly ANY money. The thing that kills me is the agents and publishers are all rich but the authors are like peasants who can't be bothered with? That's not fair at all!
I read in the paper that Barnes and Noble is dying. They had to close their major story in Manhattan. I'm in the middle of quering agents right now. I sent out 15 queries, got a lot of rejects, 2 agents asked for more info and 6 I'm still waiting to hear from. I'm seriously starting to think of self publishing my novel...I mean they put authors through a lot of stress to get published and now it seems like the book stores i'm breaking my neck to get into are closing anyway?
Great advice Darryl. I'm with you all the way. I too am a self-publisher and use LS. Best thing I ever did. Now I am helping other authors self-publish.
I wrote a book that I consider to be controversial to some of the public and I have about 100 rejections, thought about self-publishing, but not sure how to do it.
how much did you spend to publish a book... dont have to say in numberes just say ... if Alot of your money or not at all... i wanna be one also got stories in my mind
@2submit Setup costs are about 100 dollars per book with Lightning Source. After that you just buy books as you need them. I tend to buy 250 copies bulk at a time, to qualify for 25% discount. Works out about 4 dollars each for a book of 150 pages.
Your costs will be higher if using, Lulu, Authorhouse, etc., as they are like a middleman between you and the printing comopany (LS). Dealing with LS directly requires some expertise.
Hello Darryl, Great insight thanks , I have finished working on my Novel and wondered if you could tell me which self publishing company you used ..e.g Authorhouse..Lulu ..etc etc .. since both your books look nicely finished ..Thanks Rikki .
I am a self published author who has come to believe that it is the only way to go today. I have been so successful that I have been invited to appear on the Mo'Nique Show a week go. Please connect with me and let's network.
"Self Publishing is the Salvation of the Publishing Industry! " I like what you said. That is powerful. I am working on my first book. Thanks for your inspiration. God Bless You.
@Anaydena Thanks. Check out the cover of my latest book, "Reality Check." I went a step further this time and purchased an image from a stock photography website.
You made this back in 2008, when Twilight was just getting majorly popular, lol. I thought it was funny that you mentioned Harry Potter and LOTR lol cause that was more 90's than vampires
I never understood why people think only the big publishing companies have a right to publish. Yes, I have read some bad self-published novels but I have also read some really bad mainstream stuff. Look at the best seller lists from the last ten years, it's the same people over and over again. I want to read some other people too.
Nice video. I just published a book using Lulu almost two months ago now. My reason was that I wanted to get better at graphic design and share my stories with people. However, it is in the crime fiction genre, not Fantasy. 16 copies have been sold so far. It does not matter to me whether or not I make a huge profit, as I am busy getting a computer degree.
Self-publishing companies serves as a stepping stone for first time authors who wants to be noticed by mainstream publishers.
Self- publishing companies do all the legwork in order to publish your book. they create a layout for your cover and interior designs, ISBN, Copyright and Library of Congress registrations, editorial services, worldwide distribution and marketing services.
Darryl. Hello. I've been trying for years to get my manuscript published. Subject matter is: Effective communication between teenagers and parents. Can you explain a bit more about the use's of Ebay?
. Part (2)some day come knocking at your door. The worst of the publishers Ive come across are those who actually tell you E.X.A.C.T.L.Y what they want, going so far as to dictate the theme, characterizations and warnings to mind your ps and qs. Personally I have to mind my fs and cs. Self-Publishing could become the stepping stone to bigger things, but only if you write from the heart. Thanks Darryl, you inspired me to keep on keeping on!
(Part 1) This was a really well presented argument for self-publishing. Having just finished my first novel i have been querying literary agents with sample chapters whilst seeking out those very few publishers who actually accept unsolicited manuscripts in the sci-fi/fantasy genre. Found only 2. I quite agree that if dreams of fame and fortune are your only reaons for writing, then you will come a cropper, but if you're good and god save me ORIGINAL! a publisher may......
I have no experience with Lulu, but I would be sceptical of self-publishing distribition deals. The only promotion worth a damn is what you do yourself. I would go for the cheapest option you can, then find ways to sell your book.
The only sales avenue that ever really worked out for me was eBay.
Yes, they don't work. The only way to make money is to have your own self-publishing company where you buy from the printer and distribute yourself. You take some profit, but leave enough room for the indie stores (because you aren't getting into big chain stores) to add on some money so they can profit too.
dude what happened to the subject about telekinesis thought you said it is safe kinda unless you stay on that track and dont go beyond, at which i personally think that telekinesis is cool.
write to please iam interested and do want to learn about this stuff iam interested all 100% . thanks. I'll be waiting for you any reply video/text.. bye, and all the best.
also I find that many of the popular authors dominate the market. Thisiis sad becuase creativity is not locked up by theses authors. I think we would all be for the better with variety in anything. Choice is premium. I wish that many main stream media see this. Instead many have the same authors on time after time. I know ther is things as followers , but after a while, very little variety of readings is a a loss for everyone. There are good books out there but getting the exposure is difficult
I agree with you 100%...I'm a self published Author myself...my fantasy novel..Fawcetta (Voices and Echoes of the Coliseum) Vol 1. Just came out...I have the same issue...just because it's self published...it's hard for me to push it...even though I'm doing all the marketing myself...either way..we shouldn't give up...
If you want to have a book get you to moving inthe right direction please go to the web page:
thenumber1mysteryshoppingbook
the title The Zen and Zeal of mystery shopping
the best seller "what Color is your parachute" sold over two million it was picked up later by a "regular" publisher there are many books self published that did well
yea I really enjoyed your two novels darryl. I thought that you would have made another sequel to Chion. After I fineshed reading Chion I was left wanting MORE!!!.
Sorry to say, but I have to agree with this guy. Even publishing companies can campaign a book they think will do well, and it will be horrible to the general public. While a good book may be turned down 10+ times before being published. Harry Potter was declined 13 times before J. K. Rowling published her first book. A lot of new authors just don't want to go through that headache. That's why self publishers exist.
the reason people look down on self-publishing is because ANYONE can self publish, with real publishing the company is investing hundreds of thousands of dollars in your work, so they will only invest that if you are any good.
"hundreds of thousands of dollars" aren't even put on the best of the best of books. rarely tens of thousands on books. movies, music & shows are a differant story. you are probably a writer as well, I state this because it was so easy for you to exagurate.
Real publishing companies do not always invest hundreds of thousands of dollars in a manuscript. Depending on the publication, some books that are published won't even exceed a 5000 dollar marketing budget.
5000? Thats a thousand paperbacks, I dont knoe any company that prints sofew copies. If they have enough faith to print a book, they usually start with a 10000 minimum
I'm not entirely sure you know what you're talking about. an advance is somewhere around 5000 to 10000, and even then that is typically more than an author gets out of royalty checks.
Stephen King and J.K. Rowling are exceptions. Why do you think their books are successful? Their work sells. A typical author is given about 6 weeks to prove that their work will sell, and it's out of print forever.
Not the case with self-publishing. It's in print as long as the author says so.
hi darryl , why did you use lightening source (ranked 50,000) .....BUT not lulu (ranked 3000).
is there a difference...
2.
Also ...u spoke of self publishing as a "put off" .....but how would the reader know ?......you could just use lightening source.....and make your own publishing co. name (eg : tropo pub. inc.) .........when the reader reviews your book or she would assume its from a professional publishing house ....right ? so where the "put off" ?
How common is it for self-publishing companies to put the book together really flimsily when they produce it? I don't a book I write (whenever I finish it) to fall apart as my readers read it and I don't want a book to fall apart while I'm reading it. I haven't read any self-published books, I don't think, so I'm not sure if the condition of them is really as bad as some people make them out to be. Otherwise very good video. :)
These days, probably all self-publishing companies produce quality books. Most of them us the printing company Lightning Source. I'm very happy with my experience with that company. The books are equal in quality to mainstream trade paperbacks.
All self-published books that I have purchased have also been excellently produced. These include those produced by AuthorHouse, iUniverse, Lulu.
I have one published through Xlibris. also the quality isn't like you would be stabling the book together with a staple gun. What are people talking about? What about the quality?
I thought people questioned the quality of the writing its self not the cover.
This was a bit embarrasing eh? "The end of the novel descends into pure farce as the author rushes to finish the novel and remove it as much from reality as possible. Overall, a painful read."
Interesting video. We have some things in common: I am in the UK; I have sucessfully self published five books (and others by other authors); two of mine have won awards. I have some of David Icke's books and admire his bravery (and agree with some of what he says re: history and economics). Make some more vids please.
Thank you Darryl. You provided that touch of inspiration I needed today. My manuscript is complete. However the real work begins ... ISBNs, Bar Codes, Wholesaler vs Distributor, Reviews, Amazon, Forecast for initial print order, 60% Discounts, etc. etc. (This part makes writing the book seem easy - LOL) But I agree with you it is DO-ABLE. Especially w videos like yours out there, thanks again.
Barbara Kent, author/compiler of soon to be published book SUCCESS: In the Words of the Masters.
I am publishing a book via LULU, "XEON-The Message of Pascal", abut a 500 million year old computer being discovered beneath the surface of Earth in early years of 21st century. Coming out in 3 weeks. publishing is publishing.
Awesome! Thanks for making this video, Darryl. I'm not a talented writer by any means, but I love publishing my own crazy books and I'm not planning on stopping anytime soon.
In my experience, only if you do the hard work of phoning bookstores directly, telling them about your book, and asking them to order copies. I did this in the beginning and sold about 400 books this way, but I hate this part of the game, and these days I tend to concentrate on internet sales.
One of my other problems is that I don't want to take the risk of not getting a fairly regular paycheck... I have three daughters and am married and we are barely eeking by a living as it is... I fear that if I took off "regular" work in order to work on my writing would hurt us more than help us...
Oh, if you're in this game to make a regular wage, forget about it. :-) It's doesn't pay that well, even for the majority of traditionally published authors, I hear.
I wrote a book as well & I think I'm going to try the whole literary agent process first, but I'm definitely not saying no to self-publishing either. We shall see! Anyway, very interesting and informative post.
If you get a chance, please check out our featured video, EPISODE 4 of WHATZ GOOD STUDIOS and let us know what you think. If you're into awkward comedy & crazy antics, this is right up your alley. We've got wild raccoons, water balloons, Buffy references, and a mystery.
I loved that video to bits! It just gives ya such a boost! My book that I'm writing at the moment turned out to nearly have the same plot as your Ulterior. I didn't purposely make it this way, because I hadn't read your stories main plot before I wrote MY plot. So I don't know what my stories plot's gonna be, but I might just write my short stories, all in one book. =] Thanks for the advice!

Thank you for this video. It is uplifting. As a reader, I have grown tired of the major 5 or so publishers deciding for me what I should like. As an author, it's a long frustrating road to publication with a major house. Your take on things is so refreshing.

Thanks mate.
cameronmoj 1 year ago
@cameronmoj Thank you for the kind words. I've never had a publicist, so I've had to be my own. These days I actually get most of my sales through my YouTube (semi-)popularity. I tack an advert for the book onto the end of every video. Good luck with your book.

Thanks for the great encouragement on self-publishing. I've been wanting to combine a bunch of short stories into a large novel and self-publish it. How do you market the book? Is it solely by word of mouth, Amazon.com reviews, or do you hire someone? Thanks...

I'm sold on the idea of self-publishing because I have an ereader and often download books from SmashWords, a self epublishing site. I've read few duds and some really good books. The one I've just finished was great for an entertaining afternoon: a regency romance better than most of Heyer's work.
Great vid!

WildNice 1 year ago
@WildNice From what I've read about self-publishing, once the start-up costs are taken into account, you earn more per book sold than from a publisher. If you go the trad route you'll get 10% max of the cover price, a percentage of which you pay to an agent. If you self publish, all the profits are yours or are ploughed into the costs of printing the next book. Authors rarely make a fortune. PS I'm sure Darryl will give you better advice.
muskndusk 1 year ago
@muskndusk Thank you for your input and advice. Yeah, i've been heavily researching self-publishing vs. traditional pub and the more i read about it, the more working for a traditional publisher sounds like a bad idea. Unless your book is a BLOCKBUSTER/BESTSELLER you're not going to be making hardly ANY money. The thing that kills me is the agents and publishers are all rich but the authors are like peasants who can't be bothered with? That's not fair at all!
WildNice 1 year ago
@muskndusk but if you do self publish, use a pen-name...just in case it doesn't work out.

2submit 1 year ago
@2submit Setup costs are about 100 dollars per book with Lightning Source. After that you just buy books as you need them. I tend to buy 250 copies bulk at a time, to qualify for 25% discount. Works out about 4 dollars each for a book of 150 pages.
Your costs will be higher if using, Lulu, Authorhouse, etc., as they are like a middleman between you and the printing comopany (LS). Dealing with LS directly requires some expertise.

Nice video. I just published a book using Lulu almost two months ago now. My reason was that I wanted to get better at graphic design and share my stories with people.

Hi, Darryl,
How is your 'Chion' doing?
Are the sales increasing or decreasing in self-publishing?
The reason I'm asking is that I've just finished a book and want to put it on Amazon and Ebay.
Would you suggest me any other good places to sale it on?
I'm considering paying LULU for the distribution (£230). Do you think it's daft?
Hoping you will give me some advice...
Thanks, man!
gabriel1118x 2 years ago
I have no experience with Lulu, but I would be sceptical of self-publishing distribition deals. The only promotion worth a damn is what you do yourself. I would go for the cheapest option you can, then find ways to sell your book.
The only sales avenue that ever really worked out for me was eBay.
Good luck with your book.
darrylsloan 2 years ago
Yes, they don't work. The only way to make money is to have your own self-publishing company where you buy from the printer and distribute yourself. You take some profit, but leave enough room for the indie stores (because you aren't getting into big chain stores) to add on some money so they can profit too.

also I find that many of the popular authors dominate the market.

Zulnic 2 years ago
the reason people look down on self-publishing is because ANYONE can self publish, with real publishing the company is investing hundreds of thousands of dollars in your work, so they will only invest that if you are any good.
\
johnmonk66 2 years ago
"hundreds of thousands of dollars" aren't even put on the best of the best of books. rarely tens of thousands on books. movies, music & shows are a differant story. you are probably a writer as well, I state this because it was so easy for you to exagurate.
JacobCain86 2 years ago
Real publishing companies do not always invest hundreds of thousands of dollars in a manuscript. Depending on the publication, some books that are published won't even exceed a 5000 dollar marketing budget.
anzwertree 2 years ago
5000? Thats a thousand paperbacks, I dont knoe any company that prints sofew copies. If they have enough faith to print a book, they usually start with a 10000 minimum
johnmonk66 2 years ago
I didn't say printing budget. I said marketing budget, Einstein.
anzwertree 2 years ago
@ johnmonk66

BTW : superb video !
hologram7777777 2 years ago
How common is it for self-publishing companies to put the book together really flimsily when they produce it? I don't a book I write (whenever I finish it) to fall apart as my readers read it and I don't want a book to fall apart while I'm reading it. I haven't read any self-published books, I don't think, so I'm not sure if the condition of them is really as bad as some people make them out to be. Otherwise very good video. :)
germaholic 2 years ago
These days, probably all self-publishing companies produce quality books. Most of them us the printing company Lightning Source. I'm very happy with my experience with that company. The books are equal in quality to mainstream trade paperbacks.
All self-published books that I have purchased have also been excellently produced. These include those produced by AuthorHouse, iUniverse, Lulu.
darrylsloan 2 years ago
I have one published through Xlibris. also the quality isn't like you would be stabling the book together with a staple gun. What are people talking about? What about the quality?
I thought people questioned the quality of the writing its self not the cover.

In my experience, only if you do the hard work of phoning bookstores directly, telling them about your book, and asking them to order copies. I did this in the beginning and sold about 400 books this way, but I hate this part of the game, and these days I tend to concentrate on internet sales.
