@Firth693 Totally agree. Not the best acting in the world with some of the actors, or even the best scripts in the world but certainly my favourite show of all time. The mixture of the music and brilliant photography work with excellent lighting and colours made it a huge hit for me. Michael Mann is a genius. I also understand the tension between crocket and castillo was both on set and off set too!
It it said that Johnson and Olmos argued over acting during the first season. Pretty nice performances from bought! I can feel the electricity in the air! Brilliant actors!
takes me back..it was the first tv show like a running music video..DJ AND PHILPS WE NEED a NEW SHOW LIKE THIS THE BOYS OUR BACK IN TOWN..OK THERE OLD NOW THEY COULD BE THE CASTILLO'S..PLAY THE BOSS TO THE UNIT.
Well, I certainly believe the notion of Miami as a setting was helped by Scarface but that's where the comparison ends for me. Personally, MTV (when they actually showed music vids) was far more influential.
I agree that it influenced the mood or the atmosphere of Miami as a corrupt city. Although Scarface would have eaten Crockett and Tubbs for breakfast. He could have kicked the whole Vice unit's ass.
Scarface was actually a flop back in 1983. It was far from a hit and didn't get its cult status until years later, when it turned out many black rappers liked that movie. Not only them of course.
Miami Vice would have been made regardless of Scarface. Miami was the hotspot in the early 80's.
That's Giorgio Moroder, and I don't recall ever hearing any of his music in a Miami Vice episode. For Miami Vice they had Jan Hammer compose the music, which has its own style, not anything like the disco-dance style of Moroder's.
The original Scarface took place in Chicago, for DePalma's remake set in the 80's Miami made more sense.Miami Vice was conceived more as "MTV cops" and Michael Mann put his touch on it
Electronic music was already widely used in movies before Scareface
@JoeyTheFatKid Miami Vice had been batted about for a wee while in the early 80's under other names,,,,,but i do know that Scarface did have an influence on the show.............The show was always gonna be made but no one had perdition of how well and original the show was gonna be!
Spot on! The Shield and Miami Vice are my favourite cop shows. Just watched "Badge of Dishonour" and this episode had themes which were explored in The Shield.
The actors are good and production it's great. Many shitty and mediocre episodes but sometimes Miami Vice was a diamond and we have to thank Michael Mann for it. He was the producer who selects music makers etc..
TV died when this show went off the air.....

Castillo could say more with a look than most of today's actors can say with a few minutes of dialogue! This was such a great show!

Never play poker with Edward James Olmos. You'd never be able to out-bluff him.

Just another example of magic on television. Every episode is not that, but a movie.

Supposedly, Olmos and DJ did not get along and they both used the natural tension in their scenes together. It shows here.

I work with a Latino guy who looks just like Castillo. He's not quite so serious, but he has no tolerance for slackers either!
