This car did the same level of damage the Nissan Skyline did in Australia. The GT-R dominated Bathurst for 2 years effortlessly, so they banned it. It's a shame that the greatest machines are forced to disappear as quickly as they show up, but my god are they awesome to watch.

If Trans-Am was intended for AWD then the AUDI would not have been banned. It also would not have been the only AWD car there. The Aussies did the same thing for roughly the same reasons to Nissan's GT-R. They both broke an unwritten understanding that the racing was for RWD cars only. Because of this, the rule had to be written "No AWD".

audi was the first to figure how to do a complete AWD car all other cars failed to do that and they used it in rally and it owned every single american car in the trans am series at first they made fun of audi and audi dominated every race it participated in the imsa gto but i will still name you a couple of audis :

audi a4 dtm has been dominating dtm since the audi company joined the race in 2004

The reason why AWD was banned is because race owners want the spectacle of competition between roughly equal drivers, teams, and cars. To show up with a car that just "blows everyone away" negates this. Thus AWD is banned. But Trans-Am banned a lot, including IRS. While some bans can be good for competition, others that halt advancement are not. American auto racing has not found that balance yet.

Since then, racing has gotten much more heated and advanced and American sports cars have progressed to match or surpass European and Asian rivals. As I said before, it's about competition not domination.

@RealRapAndHiphp That was the LMP class not a production vehicle. But then you can't make a case along the same lines as Trans-AM with LeMans because Audi never ran in the GT classes. Besides I already explained why AWD was banned. If Audi got singled out, its because they were the only ones who went and did it and frankly they should have known better.

@RealRapAndHiphp I want you to watch Motor Trend's hot lap series up right now. I'll await your excuses. Next the R8 is RWD and is NOT doing all that well against anyone but Jaguar. Further Vipers and Corvettes have owned LeMans and ALMS with some resistance from Porsche and Ferrari for the last 10+ years. Some poor tech when in most of those years it was a foregone conclusion the Americans would win. Now BMW is basically cheating to win and the Vettes still beat them.

it aint about ..if you drive 4WD or RWD or whatever..it is about who comes around faster.. and back then they banned the audi because they owned all of the american cars..didnt look that good to the u.s. car giants huh? All wheel drive would not work in F1, power losses, extra weight, increase in ride height and problem with under car aero dynamics would have a huge adverse effect on handling and lap times

Audi veni vidi vici - and then they were banned for their "unfair advantage" - but i would say it was clever engineering to bring AWD on the track. Couldnt understand why the best driving system isnt allowed in most motorsport series - wouldnt it be cool to see AWD in Formula 1 or Indy Car???

@jusocrazy lol, you cant be serious? IMSA GTO in 89, DTM in 90 and of course their complete domination of STW in the 90's. Ya they left america after their cars were banned in IMSA and SCCA racing, the only series worth a crap in the U.S. at the time. They returned for SCCA GT in 2000 when they allowed 4 wheel drive and of course they absolutely dominated the newly formed american lemans.
