I think people are missing the point here its easy to hurt your Uke Aikido is a Martial art and is potentially lethal as an Aikidoka the responsibility of not hurting the person your practicing with is yours. Regardless of whether your a white belt or a Shodan the person whos throwing you can make it easier or harder for you to land properly. Even the shomen ate strike to the face can done in a certain way to make it harder to break fall.
The point here is that his uke's are dan ranked uke... these people should be trained to take these falls regardless of who is throwing them.
If they can't handle that, they really have no business doing this.
BOTH of his uke made rank amature mistakes which could have caused them a major injury. This isn't Takeno Sensei's problem. He did the technique as it was meant to be done. They didn't react accordingly.
No matter who gets hurt, it's the higher ranked person's fault. The master isn't supposed to slam the opponent into the ground unless it's a real fight.
Those Uke are so brave... Thumbs up... It's really an honor to be an Uke for Sensei Takeno but no thanks.... I also rather prefer to be an audience hehehe... Thanks for this post...
This is sad. A part of me wants to put Takeno inside an mma ring where he would have the opportunity to show his true warrior spirit. Surely he is to old for that though.
There is noting impressive with slamming your uke, which we want to protect, and their heads into the mat. Sad. And even more sad is that aikido has many of these characters among the top ranking teachers in Japan. Isoyama, head of the Aikikai Iwama dojo is another one who seem to take pleasure in injuring people.
well if their are many of these "characters" in the top teaching positions in japan, then maybe their is some validity to their methods. At its core aikido is budo and in real life if you are attacked you are probably going to be going for a move that will slam his head into the ground. Traditionally the japanese martial arts have been very aggresive just look at karate (albeit okinawan in origin) or many of the koryu from which aikido is derived. Even Osensei was brutal in the beginning
@Seankwondo87 Just shows the divide in opinion on Aikido. I'm personally in favour of 'hard style' training - you get used to it and the saying 'train hard fight easy' really comes alive. Its personal taste though - no one is forcing these guys to be Takeno's uke. I think that Aikido needs to retain links to budo roots, but I also appreciate that that particular path is not for everyone. Each to their own!
Where do you draw the line? Takeno's Aikido is Budo. This is a demonstration as opposed to training and his uke are "mostly" getting up again :). Takeno himself knows if there is malice in his intent and his Uke (though they may argue) do have a choice. Takeno is having a seminar in Aust. at easter time, I may change my opinion after that !?
oh yes he was and even his top rank uke both past and present will surely agree with you but you know the problem here I guess is no one among his top uke would dare to tell him exactly what you and I wants to tell him. There is simply no life insurance policy when he tells you ..you're going to be his next uke.I think its a lot safer to just watch him from a distance.

It is what it is. If the uke are not up to it they will be injured. Same as on day 1 technique 1.
