I remember in high school I use to look the transcirpts for a lot of the episodes from Daira fan-based websites, and quote her all the time. She always had the best sarscasm on TV, and she was a non fictional animated character at that. Great show.
If they exchanged Val with lady gaga, I wouldn't notice the difference... both idiots are pretending to be awesome role models while in fact they love making a big fat living out of their idiot fans.
What weirdo would desperately seek for attention? If she was a true 'queen of the weirdos' that moron would be herself instead of making a big fool out of herself just out of desperation.
@Neigebonbon i couldnt have said it better myself. Im 18 and only started watching daria in september when i first moved to college because i was just sick, as daria puts it, of my "youth culture". All those lame role models that everyone looks up to are just scummy pretentious assholes. I cant stand lady gaga and i hate how her stupid fans say im miserable. I keep telling myself the reason im so different is just because im a little more enlightened that the rest of my generation.
@667neighborofdabeast That's the spirit kiddo, don't be bothered by what crap they say. Real weirdos stay weird without desperately seeking attention, just be yourself. Everyone's weird in their own way... some are smart enough to be normally weird instead of being an attention seeker.
@BCoriginal1 I would think one would have to have the natural charisma and understanding of everything as Robin William's character in Good Will Hunting, with a body like Trent's. See what I can make out from Daria's character is that she is alot like Ben Aflek's character, Will, yet instead of using physical strength as a last resort, she recedes in a metaphoricaly obvious state of sarcasm, making her detestable to anyone she doesn't want to screw things up with. (stupid 500 character cap).
@BCoriginal1 So then you're like Trent. I always thought Daria ripped me off. Though I always say the same thing about Kurt Cobain. So basically I'm like Kurt mixed with Daria, Jane, and Trent.
@BCoriginal1 that may seem the case but her cynicism is so tough a diamond bladed chainsaw wouldn't be able to cut through it. Any attempt at humor that isn't anti social would make her tear you to pieces.
@Slashbash No but she doesn't like being forced into things she doesn't like to do. And if she had no choice she would either sabotage it or make it work in her favor.
@natelios Na she's just plain, unnecessarily complicated. I understand that people need limits and not follow every crowd they see but sometimes she needs to open her mind a bit.
@BCoriginal1 marriage is the result of years of patriarchal female servitude, and what a sick sad world we live in when people look to a relatively stagnant fictional cartoon character for meaningful relationships and growth.
@sexdrugsRnR Marriage is a partnership,a union, not this whole master/slave trail of thought that's conveyed through countless forms of media(i.e television, movies) so if you think it's that then you'll be treated as such. I enjoy how you simply come out of left field calling me a quote on quote sick sad individual for stating how I'm fond of an animated character's personality, when you probably took the time out of your "glorious" life to say so. Oh the irony,oh the irony.
@sexdrugsRnR Marriage isn't some kind of slave relationship where a wife becomes a bounden slave and works like an indentured servant, you know. Just because it used to be that way doesn't mean that men and women can't enter into marriage as equals, in love and respect, and live happily and harmoniously all their days. Also, Daria wasn't stagnant. She developed quite a lot over the last couple of seasons.
@BCoriginal1 I'll just say then that a certain Mr. Felton was very interested in my high school career, how I turned down his offer as asst. writer with a pretty damning speech at a kiss-ass function, how I wore glasses and comfortable shoes without irony, how my best friends were a tall, unconventionally beautiful artist who lived with her dope-smoking musician brother and her hippie mother, and a popular cheerleader who never understood when I was mocking her.
@BCoriginal1 The phrase is 'quote/unquote' and you don't need to use the phrase when typing, as you can just put quotes around what you want (e.g. you can "handle" a woman like Daria)
@BCoriginal1 She's smart, but she comes out really closed-minded and I wouldn't be surprised if you ended up in the news because you committed a really gruesome suicide.
She's not bad, she really helps me improve myself. I do have my own principles and ethics but sometimes when I think of Daria I open up my mind a little more.
@Neigebonbon I'm never one to lose my head over a lady. I live by the philosophy/joke "I'll keep getting them wrong until I eventually get it right." Besides I always found myself attracted to intelligent women with some looks to back it up.
I remember this episode of Daria. I really enjoyed Daria giving her trademark speeches with brutal honesty. She never tolerated so-called "celebrities" (Val from this episode or two radio DJ's from Jake of Hearts episode).
Aw dang I thought this was gonna be the quote where the magazine woman says that edgy is "walking to the edge of a cliff and being able to see all the way down but dancing anway" and Jake said "what the hell does that mean?!" lol
Attention gnortznitz, ectoonea and others who miss the point: Marilyn Manson is this kind of "edgy." A nerdy high school anti-consumerist nonconformist is not. Have you ever even seen this show?
Now I have just realized why when ever I watched MTV as a teenager. I got depressed unlike the rest off them... I was smart enough to be aware off what It use to be. And while looking at all the gangsters rapping pop punk wannabes skateboarding I could see MTV committed cultural suicide getting rid off black sabbath (and any good music) along with bevis and butthead and Daira... They said MTV was corrupting youth back then. Now the youth off the day will not only be corrupted but dumb too.
@Electricspaceodyssey Even The Learning Channel is trying to "edgy." Real housewives of OC is the same marketing crap, except it proves that housewives are even dumber than the average MTV watching teen.
@cookieskank29 Simple. Instead of trying to produce quality content to become popular in order to make money, they realised that they already are popular and can air just about anything, knowing that they will retain a large number of viewers, meaning more ads/sponsors and them continuing to make millions. Reality TV shows are also much cheaper and easier to produce than something worth airing, so its a win-win situation for the higher-ups of MTV
@cookieskank29 They spread their legs and let the stupid younger "hip" generation fuck them. Not entirely the stupid younger generations fault, MTV is desperately trying to "stay alive". Kind of reminds how my mom is. She's in a mid-life crisis, and also having a personal identity crisis. She (mtv) goes to clubs--taking on the roll of a "cougar" and hunting down young men(audiance) in hopes to prove to herself that she's "still got it"... whatever "it" is.
@cookieskank29 same way America got this way but with a compressed time frame, oh and I think the video will answer both questions if you watch it enough.
@ectoonea I don't think it's very fair to criticise Daria as trying to be "edgy" to appeal to teenagers. I mean, the show didn't really try to seem dangerous. Its main character was a cool loner, sure, but only because she was too smart to not notice the inanity going on around her, too sensitive to want to deal with it and too principled to try and fit in, and the show depicts just how painful and isolating that can be. Isn't that why it appealed so much to disaffected teenagers?
You know what the whole irony of this is? Daria was produced by MTV and essentially told the audience that everything the network stands for is pure crap. Why would they put a show on that absolutely lambastes them? Because it made them seem more "edgy". Nonetheless, it was a good show that encouraged you to think for yourself without ever getting preachy.
And don't tell me this show was produced when "MTV was good" because the "Real World" has been around since 1992.
I won't say MTV was great in the 90s but what started off as an annoying trend back then is now the complete and total sum of all MTV programming. I complained my butt off about the stupidity of a lot of their shows back in high school, but 90s stupid can't hold a candle to 2000s stupid ;)
This show is probably MORE relevant today than it was then, as hard as that would have been to believe for the makers of Daria when it was on the air.
@missstyBlueHAZE Ah, what the hell? I'll entertain your question.'
Quite simply, he is a pop-culture child, and thinks I'm too critical of corporate business, private companies, and concepts and media that are specifically designed to appeal to the general public's psyche just so they can make a few bucks.
