My favorite and most lovely sister was named Anita ....love that name and love this singer. She was so cool. I always liked Anita O'Day even though she wasn't from my generation but I like Big Band singers, they were so cool and accomplished!
Well, Joan . . . do you have dates for these pix of Anita . . . I'd bet that they certainly pre-date 1945 . . . even pre-date her time with the Krupa organization . . . and speaking of photos . . . I'm curious to see a shot of the first husband---golfer Carl Hoff . . . in her book she implies that he was a Mighty, Mighty Man . . . if you catch her drift . . . pity that she became a slave to smack . . . Gary in Arizona . . . courtesy of Vic561.
Anita O`Day with tentet conducted by Lowell Martin
Charlie Griffith,tp; Jimmy Skyles,tb: Heinie Beau,as; Manny Gershman,Herbie Haymer,ts; Harry Suchmas,bs; Milt Raskin,p; Dave Barbour,g; Phil Stephens,b; Zutty Singleton,d. Los Angeles,January 18,1945
Four other tracks recorded same day and they were,
really different from billie holiday's version, which was a lot slower and more melancholy...does anyone know whose version is closer to the original melody? in general anita was more of an improviser than billie, but billie too was known for drastically reconfiguring melodies to suit her range.
You know sometimes you need to listen to a song like this to get a certainly "different" feel of a song compared to the songs of the day. Anita was great and that voice was special. Great tune and great singer no doubt about that. :) Wish the mood of the country could go back to 1945. I wasn't around then but have read much about that time period. :)
A great song by one of the best singers of the big band era reminds me of the many talented people the swing era produced! Keep it on here forever! Thanks for posting it!
I first heard this in the 1945 movie, "Detour." Glad to hear it sung by one of my favorite singers, Miss Anita O'Day.

Just love Anita O'Day with the smoothest big band, Stan Kenton.

What band is this?

@BardCoennius Probably Kenton--I can tell because they're not swinging. Anita's great though.

I have always placed you far above me,
I just can't imagine that you love me;
And after all is said and done,
To think that I'm the lucky one,
I can't believe that you're in love with me.
