^why would you want mtb to sound like maps and atlases? they would be 2 of the same bands then. both dope. i kinda get where you coming from but, still, cant take away anything from mtb
I guess I shouldn't judge based on how my friends are at shows, but holy shit that crowd looks lame! They look like they're listening to a math lecture not math rock!
@TheGerthax minus the bears vocalist writes and records great melodies but cant hold or hit a note to save his life. completely ruins their live performances. at least this guy isn't tone def, PLUS are you aware of what he's pulling off on the neck of his guitar while executing strange vocal rhythms and melodies? in conclusion, mtb's "singer" has nothing on dave davison on maps and atlases
they are honestly two great indie bands. they are my favs fo sho.. and fuck no they are not pop. i will cry the day that happens. you cant compare these bands to that garbage
I prefer Maps and Atlases to Minus the Bear, mostly because i just have this feeling that their music has more soul... it has a quality of something old and mechanical, like a grandfather clock, with its complexity, and then underneath all of it is the lyrics and singing and the folk-type chord progressions.
But music is all taste. No point in arguing over it.
I disagree, the vocals and overall sound of minus the bear are waaay better. dont get me wrong, I like maps and atlases, especially their guitar parts, just not as much as minus the bear
Idk. But for some reason, I think Maps and Atlases are a way better math rock band than Minus the Bear. There's no explanation why I think that. But there's this feeling that they're better.
i think minus the bear has a better overall sound, but you really cant compare the two without bringing taste in music into the argument. I do however think that the guitarist for M&A has more skill than the one from MTB
i loved when they came to leeds, they did quite a nice 12-bar blues version of this song as an intro, wished id have recorded it.
the only shame is that an encore was pretty much impossible for a band who have only two EPs to fall back on. i really do hope the guys are going to write enough material for an album soon.
you must mean OLD minus the bear. i think if mtb would've followed or stuck to their roots, they could've written better stuff than this. but since they've calmed down way too low, maps & atlases could possibly show them up. this sound definitely has great potential. don't get me wrong, i love minus the bear... it's just that Planet Of Ice was such a disappointment to the melodic & soothing math rock we've come to know and love, you know?
definitately. and i love minus the bear i own every thing they have out, but really, maps & atlases just win, especially on you, me and the mountain, the vocals have gotten much better, and they are generally just more explosive than minus the bear.
ill put it like this: if m&a had as much music as minus the bear, the would be better, but for now id say its too close to call.
To me they are a mix between terra melos and look mexico.
Such a bad ass band Maps & Atlases is though. Full of very talented musicians.

this isn't really the same as minus the bear. that shit is poppy and gross. just cause it has fingertapping doesn't make it good.
harktheherald 2 years ago
Sound's to me like someones a bit jealous of their skillz.
theangrycow22 2 years ago 3
how the hell is this poppy? dont get me wrong I love minus the bear, dave knudson is a BEAST at guitar, but these guys are fantastic.

Well you don't know shit about Bear I'm afraid....
The arrangements alone in MTB are exemplary and very theoretically sound. I won't even mention their other noteworthy attributes and skills.

I think a lot of people are trying to wrap their head around the music. Think about the first time you smoked weed.

i havnt heard anything like this!!! ever!!!can anyone suggest anymore bands?

Well the only one sorta similar to this that i can think of is "them, roaringtwenties".
More tapping less vocals though
still quite enjoyable.

I love the instrumental music of M&A but the vocals kind of ruin it for me. Please don't hate me for this. I love M&A but the vocals...idk.

yeah, i just saw em do that blues intro to this song last night at the sub in chicago, what great show
jamstrat 3 years ago
just because both bands tap doesnt really make them comparable. MTB is much more laid back whereas Maps and Atlases is kinda frantic, laid back rock

ehh, idk they are pretty close, and they are kinda different bcuz minus the bear has alot of electronics and shit...

I belong to the school of thought that music isn't a competition, and thus it is juvenile to argue about things. It's pretty much all opinion.

Dave Knudson and Dave Davison, despite the shared "Dave", are very different players.

maps & atlases destroy (with love).

yeh Maps & Atlases are definately the better musos.
but Dave's singing is pretty bad sometimes - I think his better singing can be found in more recent videos
