I am a little surprised so many people are asking where Castlevania is, it really isn't that hard of a game, Castlevania 3 maybe, but the original was only difficuly because of the Grim Reaper, but he can be taken out easily by exploiting the holy water trick.

It was the first console to really take you on an adventure, and for its time, the graphics were breath taking when compared to the Atari 2600. The NES is known for giving birth to some very iconic games and some love it for the difficulty.
The NES not only has nostalgic porpoises, but it is one of the most defining parts of Gaming history, turning around the damage Atari did to the gaming market.

Should Battle Kid be counted because it is was created recently? Ninja Turtles, Fester's Quest, Double Dragon 3 and Silver Surfer shouldn't count because the controls suck on those games and I've beaten Battletoads before...with a friend. All you really have is keep distance between you and the 2nd player.
Most of you little nooblets wouldn't know shit about these games. If you were to play them now, you would spend 4 minutes trying and then quit since you have the attention span of a fire ant taking a shit. Or you would run to the internet like a bitch, looking for cheat codes at the first roadblock you hit. Stick with your COD or Halo where you have unlimited lives/ammo/money/etc and can beat the game in half an hour, so the companies can take your money the next day on another game.

There will always be superficially difficult games, where shit flies at the speed of light and kills you before you can realize it's there, but what's truly impressive is a game that's both well designed and difficult.

I've beaten battle toads without cheating before, it is possible, it just takes a lot of practice. I think some of the other games on this are harder to be honest.
I'll never understand why every one of these lists uses the original Ninja Gaiden instead of 3. I will agree that the original is a much better 3 but it's so much harder. The ruthless overdamage and insane level designs... ARGH. It was years before I was able to beat it where as the original Ninja Gaiden I beat way back in the 90s.

These games were difficult, but many were by bad design.
Of this list, Super C and Battle Kid really are well made and feature all the "good" kinds of challenge. The sort a steady hand and a wit could feasibly conquer on the first try, which is how you know it's "good" challenge and not "designed only to take quarters" challenge. The rest are borderline or bad, especially Battletoads.
Ok, all of these are good except number 8, its not TECHNICALLY an NES game, it was never on the NES during its life time, so you can't count that, give me a substitute.

Battletoads is hard, not impossible. I've beaten it more than once, but it takes lot of memorization (and the warps certainly help). It's easier than most of the games on this list...
Finishing the game with 2 players is literally impossible because of a glitch in the game. (Clinger Winger Level). I don't know why people hate on this game so much - it's one of my all-time favorites.
There are four games that I'm surprised that weren't mentioned: Zelda 2, Dick Tracy, Dragon's Lair, and............Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde. Very surprised.

I'll never understand why every one of these lists uses the original Ninja Gaiden instead of 3. I will agree that the original is a much better 3 but it's so much harder. The ruthless overdamage and insane level designs... ARGH. It was years before I was able to beat it where as the original Ninja Gaiden I beat way back in the 90s.

These games were difficult, but many were by bad design.
Of this list, Super C and Battle Kid really are well made and feature all the "good" kinds of challenge. The sort a steady hand and a wit could feasibly conquer on the first try, which is how you know it's "good" challenge and not "designed only to take quarters" challenge. The rest are borderline or bad, especially Battletoads.

Ok, all of these are good except number 8, its not TECHNICALLY an NES game, it was never on the NES during its life time, so you can't count that, give me a substitute.

i almost beat most of the games you mentioned, as a matter of fact i beat battletoads from level 1 trought level 12 win any continues, and lots of life to beat Dark Queen. in 2 player mode i only could reach level eight (robomanus level) after i try to beat the level with my brother only i survive.

Battletoads is hard, not impossible. I've beaten it more than once, but it takes lot of memorization (and the warps certainly help). It's easier than most of the games on this list...
Finishing the game with 2 players is literally impossible because of a glitch in the game. (Clinger Winger Level). I don't know why people hate on this game so much - it's one of my all-time favorites.
