LOL I do it completely different: octives at the 5th and 7th fret for the signature lick, and an open A chord played at the 5th and playing the ascending lick on the D string as I bang it out. This is on electric however; your version works better on acoustic.

Yes, though I learned to call it 'clawhammer'. I learned that technique from Freddie Pelletier in Saskatchewan in 1992/93. But I've been playing since March, 1981.
