  • I have a copy of a es175 and it is beautiful. only thing is there is no name on the head stock. ever thing else looks like the Ibanez. I purchased it in the 80's on the west coast. Has any one ever heard of the "cat " guitar? I thing the guy who made them lived in fontana?

  • Gibson (or anybody) never actually sued Ibanez, as they had changed the headstock shape to a Guild-like shape by 1976.

After that, between 1978 - 1982 Ibanez (i.e., Fuji Gen Gakki) went on to make some of the best jazz guitars ever made. Just ask John Scofield!

  • @filtecuk Thanks for your input. I tried to be careful in saying sued or "allegedly" sued as only the parties involved can know what went on behind closed doors.

  • Ibanez stratocaster copy was my first guitar. Bought the Ibanez and a '66 Fender vibro champ (both used) for $135 in 1982.

  • Laminate is one thing, agreed, but plywood is something altogether different - i think the term plywood is being used confused with laminate here. And there is no laminate on the flame back and sides with a 2460 - the figuring runs right through on these models as it does on an L5. Don't get me wrong, it's no big deal or anything - it's just that these guitars are structurally far better than is being suggested here. Wish i hadn't sold my little Carvin 22 way back now!

  • @CptPattern Hi - I had assumed laminate was a posh term for plywood - could you explain what the difference is? I have an old Antoria L5 copy which I always thought of as a ply box - but maybe it's laminated. Sounds pretty good amplified but crap unplugged. Looks good though.

  • @zthetha - No !! Plywood is a 'wood' in its own right, although it is usually found in lesser company than the guitars on show here. Think of crates of fruit with 'outspan' or 'fifes' stamped on them with bluey/green streaks running across it - that's plywood. Laminate is simply any wood that has been pieced together to form a solid whole - laminate flooring for example. Or in the case of the guitars here, The top on the L5 is a solid, single piece of wood, (to be cont....)

  • @zthetha ....whereas on the Ibanez, if you sliced it through, you would see stripes of wood that had been pressed together - in the Ibanez's case it's spruce here. As ditdacoms quite rightly says though, laminated tops work well in certain situations (less prone to feedback at higher volumes and generally a little tougher). I feel a little anorakish for originally posting now to be honest - it's just that i felt that insinuating that the back and sides had some kind of fancy veneer...

  • @zthetha ....was really unfair as the back and sides on a 2460 are solid maple. I have a 1963 L5 and two Ibanez 2460's and every site (not the poster of this vid btw) seems to talk about the Ibanez as a 'not bad' attempt at an L5 - they are fantastically close and in a blinfold situation (or just don't look at the headstock), I would defy anybody to tell me which was the 'real thing'. As musicians we perpetuate the myths only to then have to pay them ourselves......

  • @zthetha ....ourselves (or maybe that's just guitarists!). I don't know about the Antorias - I know they were built and brought in to Britain for a distributor in Leeds if i remember correctly - and to be honest they were definately built to a budget but i'm not sure how much of that budget was under the paint! The hardware on the fender copies were indeed crap - but that can always be changed. If you take one of the pickups out on your L5 and look at the ....

  • @zthetha ....wood through it's depth - you should be able to see if it is laminated or not - tbh i can't see Antoria building anything solid but you can always look. Looking inside the guitar at the back and sides should be a good indication of whether it's Plywood or not. Anyway if it looks good - who cares!!! (eek...note to self, don't let your garage rock side show on serious jazz threads!!). BTW - if it's a jazzy sound you're after, what strings are you using on it?...god i'm boring....

  • @CptPattern Have posted reply on your site - don't have to split 'em that way.

  • 2460 has a laminated top. 2470 has a solid top. Either way it's a great guitar and the laminate works well in certain situations where a solid can have issues.

  • Plywood?! on a 2460! Look again fella - theres no plywood on that! Not on a real one anyway.
