  • Have F-86 Saber ben on a carrier??

  • @sweJN A variant of the F-86 was built for the Navy. Look up FJ, FJ-2 and FJ-3 Fury.

  • Great video. Thanks so much for sharing. I have two cousins who where naval aviators. One an Academy grad who later flew E3s and Greyhounds and is a plank owner of the Abe Lincoln. He was squadron safety officer during the Navy's infamous stand down. His brother was a helicopter pilot who later was the air ops commander at NAS Pensacola prior to retiring. We got to see a Blue Angels homecoming with him as Air Boss a few years back. Thanks again for posting and your service.

  • My father was aboard the Big O at the same time you were filming this, he was a photographer aboard her . he is also in the movie bridges over toki ri walking around in the back ground . Thanks for posting this it was great and Thanks for Serving my Beloved Country .

  • I wonder if those were hydraulic/pneumatic cats. No steam.

  • Thank you Sir for that brilliant piece of history that you chose to share with the world. Thank you very much!

  • Very Nice! Thank You!

  • Enjoyed that thanks.. My son starts his navy flight training in February, I'll show it to him.

  • Loved your video!

  • Thank you for the presentation, the narration, and your service to our country.

  • Thank you for uploading

  • Fantastic videography! Thank you for uploading them. My father was XO of the Phil-C's fighter squadron when she was commissioned. I think she participated in Admiral Byrd's Antarctic expedition in '48.

  • Thank you for posting this! My grandfather, CDR G.A. Robinson, flew off the Hornet as Squadron Commander of VF-144 based in Miramar.

  • Thanks mate, good video!

  • Thanks for your service.. Great video and narration.

Must have been a N. Korean that did not like this video

  • Fabulous, thank you SO MUCH!

  • Seeing the blow-in doors sucked in on the F-9's, checking for hydraulic leaks at start-up, NC-5 starting tractors, lots of good memories.

Once you got your M.B. seat card(OMIS) the squadron CO would let us enlisted guys go on training flights.(WITHOUT G-SUITS!)

Lt. Galbraith flew me home to Oregon a couple of times from Kingsville, Texas. I was amazed at how touchy the flapperons and flapperettes were. You could bang your head on the side of the canopy if you were't prepared. (VT-21- 66-68).

  • I flew the cougar in the training command and have several traps onboard the Lex. Truly a fine fighter, built like a locomotive the thing just could not be broken.

    Thanks for the video.

  • Hey Paralleler!

I sent you a personal message regarding this video. My father too was on the Hornet and has still frame pictures that match your footage of the Hornet coming into port at Alameda almost exactly! You two must have been within 5'-10' from each other.

Check you You Tube "Inbox" for our contact info!

THANKS! and look forward to hearing from you so that we can tell you the incredible story of how we realized this coincidence!

  • Outstanding! My dad was on the Essex and Bon Homme Richard during Korea.

    radio tech.

  • Long live the Phil Sea!! Thank you so much for sharing this extraordinary video!

  • Great video!

  • Thank you for sharing this. I'm only 36 but as a kid growing up in late 70' early 80's Cleveland I watched old war films on TV. Later my dad would tell about My uncle Frank who served from 1959-1967 in the Navy on the USS Forrestal, USS Intrepid, and then finally the "Big E". He started out as a plane captian on Cougers then transitioned to A-4's. He was on the "Big E" during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Again thanks for sharing those films and thank you for your service.

  • Incredible footage! Thanks for sharing and thanks for your service!

  • Long Live Hornet!

  • That's why 50s were so fantastic (along with cars and rock n'roll). WW2 Propeller aircrafts and jets on the same carrier! Fantastic film, thanks for sharing!

  • My father was the Phil Sea's fighter squadron's XO when she was commissioned back in '46. Dad passed away back in '96 and Mom in '08. As executor of the estate I had to go through all of the estate's documents and I found a letter my dad had written home in September of '46 when the PS was on her shakedown cruise. In the letter he wrote how the air group had already lost a number of pilots to accidents. Back in those days, if you went into the sea in cold weather, you were done for. Period.

  • I've seen Corsairs and Hellcats flying and taking off and landing with their canopy's open but it's interesting to see that even in the Panthers and Cougars and other jets, they takeoff and land with their canopy open too. Awesome.

  • I think I saw my Dad !

  • very nice and interesting footage, thx for sharing it!

  • thx, really nice to watch

  • Thanks for converting these films! Fantastic! Thank you for your service too. I am reading 'First Blue' at this time...about Butch Voris. I am familiar with a lot of WW2 footage and this bridges the gap perfectly. Anyone reading 'First Blue' this footage brings many descriptions to life! Thanks again!

  • Thanks for sharing an important part of Naval Aviation history. Corsairs and Skyraiders sharing the deck with straight wing Panthers and swept wing Cougars.

    Better than the History Channel!

  • awsome you are the man

  • Another great film!

  • Thank you so much for sharing your personal video.

  • Outstanding. Thank you.

  • Great footage and commentary. Very reare to see footage of the Korean conflict here in Australia despite our men and women serving there.

  • Indeed Remarkable footage, hard to find movies of that period.

Remember all forgotten heroes of the navy in the korean war.

Great piece of history about sixty years ago...

    Thanks

  • Remarkable footage, well done.

  • My uncle was one of the toko ri movie pilots. Not sure if he was on this carrier at this time though. He was on the boxer at one time I do know that.

  • Thanks for this, its very nice

  • flight deck ops have come a long way.

  • Thank you so much. My father was on the Phil Sea at the time that was shot. He was on the AG crew.

  • My dad served on the Yorktown, this video is wonderful, thank you!

  • I'm a Malaysian, and even I can appreciate what a great video this is.

  • That is an awsome video... I was also on the Yorktown CV-10 in Charleston, SC. I was able to get in the cockpit of a F9F Panther in the Yorktown's hanger deck. I gotta say the layout of the aircraft was fairly good.

  • Thanks for that great piece of history. And thank you for your part in serving the country. I was born in 1954, about the time you shot much of that footage. Larry

  • My dad was in the USAF photo-reconnaissance during the war, although he got shipped elsewhere after his job was automated. This video is a treasure, thanks for posting.

  • Execellent piece of history thank you for sharing a part of your life with us.

  • Dale,

Great Video. Brought back a lot of memories!!

  • If you enjoyed this video, you might want to check out the book "Panthers Over Korea" by George Schnitzer. The book was just published in October of 2007 and I am really enjoying it! I found out about it while volunteering aboard the aircraft carrier Hornet.

  • This is one of the best historical videos I have ever seen, thanks for posting it!

  • Thank you for your hard work and for posting this video!

  • incredible film, thank you very much for posting it

  • My dad was actually aboard the USS Hornet CVA-12 during the World Cruise of 1954. It was really cool watching the Hornet sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge and entering the San Francisco Bay knowing that somewhere deck amongst the sailors on deck stood my dad. He was only 19 years old, six years before I was born.

A really awesome video. Thanks for posting it. I wish there was more.

  • Thank you for editing and uploading this wonderful and interesting bit of history!

  • My dad and I loved "The briges of Toko Ri" sad story, dad was 16 when you were there, living outside the Chance Vought factory, he wanted to be there. He went on to fly for PAA, we both thank you for your service.

  • Thankyou very much very interesting my father served in the Korean war with the Royal Marines.Well Done

  • Great piece of history. Not everyday you get to see films of carrier ops from that period.

  • NOT from a movie. Great!

  • Great video, thanks!

  • Thank you so much for sharing this vid. Most excellent video!!!

  • Excellent clip!!!

  • Thank you for this video!

  • An outstanding video. Thank you very much for sharing.

I would like to share the videos my dad took while he was in the navy in the early 70's. He has already converted them to VHS a while ago. What is needed to digitize them?

  • My Macintosh has a Firewire connection. I use a Canopus ADVC-100 to convert analog VHS to digital. With the Canopus I can import directly into iMovie and export to iDVD or the web. If you're using a PC, you'll need to get some help from a knowledgeable PC user.

  • It looks like I'm going to have to get some help then. Thanks, though.

  • historic. thank you

  • Sir,

Thank you for your service to our country and this rare footage............ go Navy!!!
