My mare was given bad hay for about 4 days in a row by my son even after I showed him what NOT to feed! 3 of my 4 horses were coughing a week or so later. All got better and are not coughing now except my mare. She only coughs when she is happy at feeding time and it's usually only one or two coughs. There has been some snot in her water bucket tho. How did it start out for you? Was it immediate heaves or did it start with a cough and then progress to worse? I have a vet coming Wednesday.
@000mercedes to be honest, i cant remember. She wanst my horse, she was my uncle's horse. Her heaves started about 4 years ago, if im remembering correctly. But i think my uncle said something about it starting with her coughing a lot. But i dont think you should be worried with your mare coughing only a couple times. But i'm not an expert. Good luck with the vet check! I hope your mare doesnt have heaves. they are a real nightmare.
@westernfilly I'm not sure what needle my uncle uses. I dont know what he gives her either. I'm sorry about your mare. I hate heaves with a firey pashion. What do you do to help your mare's heaves not to progress?
@mycatChica we just keep her on good hay and give her medications . but i got to give her more expensive stuff soon. hers arent as bad as sweetys from these clips though.
@westernfilly Its good that your mare isnt really bad. Some things that we try, other than giving her medication, my uncle keeps our outside a lot. Shes only in the barn maybe 40 minutes a day. And when she is in the barn, we try to spray her stall a little bit to keep the dust down. We also keep her feed bucket off the ground (in the video it was on the ground, but i read an article about how feeding them with their feed buckeds off the ground helps keep then from breathing in as much dust.)
@mycatChica yup thats for sure what you should be doing. has she improved? lol i seen its been like over a year since you posted this, i just randomly came across it wanting to see how other peoples horses were like.
my mare has round bales right now, its soon going to be winter here with snow and everything. not really sure if she should be having rounds though. they're good quality....
normally shes on pasture and square bales. kept out 24/7 except when i take her in to tack up.

They get moldy and that makes her heaves act up a lot. Whan i took the video, she had just recently been put in a pen by herself without any round bails because the horses were starting to eat on the round bails, and she had been eating on them too. Her heaves arnt normally as bad as they are in the video.
