OK SO I HAVE THIS PROBLEM AS WELL I HAVENT FIXED IT BUT I KNOW HOW TO PREVENT IT. when your disks are scratched and you put it into your xbox it is hard on the lens so install the games on to your xbox if you can it will not stress out the system as much and you will avoid this.

I did this last year to my xbox and it worked like a charm. The only problem was it would screw up again every few weeks. It eventually got to the point where it would screw up if a disc spinned for about 10 minutes. I eventually had to order a brand new spindle.

@GamerGuy51 Really? the motor that spin the disk is actually caused by the laser? weird cause the laser seem to work it lit and work normally, btw to extract the DVD key from Hitachi drive with ROM 78 or 79 you need an unlock disk.

So I took apart the motor, and there is hard white gunk caked on two of the copper coils. Does this mean the motor is fried??
The motor will rotate a disc for a few seconds, but very slowly and it looks like the motor is laboring to do so. I tried adjusting the 2 screws with the springs, and still nothing.

I think there is another issue on the side that if this process above does not unseize your motor......when you plug everything back into the xbox there is a small push button on the left side of the motor when looking at it from above....i was having this problem and noticed the button and when the xbox was powered on i pushed in the button with a small screwdriver and then reset the xbox and the motor started right up....i dont know if that is some sort of reset or not
@ucbearcat47 that switch tells the drive the laser position. when the laser presses it, the drive zero's out and knows exactly where it is, as it's crucial to booting the 360 games
@GamerGuy51 It seemed to be the key to success for me....though I did find a guy on ebay that sold new drives for like $25 so I ended up just picking up one of those and parting out the motor this past weekend so as to avoid constantly repairing it.

please HELP. My Xbox game spins for precisely 2 seconds at normal speed and then abruptly stops. The laser also flashes the normal red beam during this 2 second spurt then also goes off. The power ti the unit if fine and there appear to be no enchroachments/encumberences to spin freely.Almost presents like a "switch" type of problem. Any thoughts?
your laser doesn't see a disc so it stops spinning...try a cd it that works then its probably dirty. you might need to replace it. if you already did then you need to remove the anti static point on the laser or it wont function properly. good luck!

Well, so i have put some greece back on, and it works.. But only DVD movies, not any games.. Please dont try this, it is pointles.. Rather try to put more greece inside, it will really help a bit..

This worked for me.. as well as it did for you. My disc wouldnt spin, I did this.. and it now spins great. I can load CDs where I couldnt load anything before.. but how about that next video? What do I need to do now to get it to play 360 games again?! Lemme know bro, thanks!
Oh thank you so much dude!! Everyone - this works.. clean the motor, do the spindle screws correctly.. you can also use a 1.5 allen wrench btw. (metric) - I also did 1 and a quarter turn instead of a half on each.. and it works great. thanks again man!
Got a small question, on one of those copperwire stuff is a small whie piece of something. Do you have it on there or should i get it off? Because its really stuck to the copper wire
So it looks like you're doing something extra/different from many of the other vids ive seen. Is that because of this particular drive type? So far ive seen videos that simply have you tigten two screws, and a few that have you slide the laser back to its starting position?
specifically what part are you cleaning? I am looking at the copper wiring. I really need to fix this before Modern Warfare 2, I thought I could just replace the disc drive, but i just learned about flashing drives, and that makes no sense to me.
Some clip fell out of the bottom of the drive. I don't know what to do with it. It has 6 prong like things and a hook end. If you know what this is can you please help me out.

I had 3red rings of death a month ago, and spent hours on finding a quick how-to that works. I wasn't intended to give out 100 bucks and wait days for repair. I eventually found a great guide on 3REDLIGHTS (.) INFO and managed to repair my xbox in an hour. Hope it helps.
OK, you know the three screws that hold the motor(spindle) in place? Those black springs go where the silver screws screw in. So, put one black spring in the left and one on the right then screw the sliver screws in.
i fixed mine but a day later ther motor wont even start to spin and now somespring came off from somewhere so im just gonna have to replace the whole didsc drive and switch out the card thing in mineand put it in a new one.
How can you increase the strength of the laser? I have that problem and pot tweaking sounds like a solution but a tutorial or guide would definatly be appreciated.
just unscrew the metal silver part of it turn it over and pull on the black spindle peice you cant just pull it off without unscrewing it though there is a grey lip that locks it on from falling off so you gotta unscrew it then flip it over and pull it should come right off
OMG THANKS! BTW if ur 360 is making a grinding noise ur screws are too tight. easy fix is tight the screws he unsrewed on this video and if it spins and makes a grinding noise just loosin them a bit
same with me. but the lens kind of works. it just gets jammed at a certain point and it wont start to spin if the lens doesnt move full. we probably have the same problem
yea i just ordered two new laser cables off ebay, t(hat cable that pluges in back of the laser). cause i read if your laser doesnt work then its cause that cable might not be good cause its the cable that powers your laser ill let you know if it works for me cause you said you might have the same problem ohh and i got my cables for only 7 bucks
and yea whats happening to you was happening to me for like a couples months before it stopped working fully it would work sometimes so i would load games to the hardrive and play games that way

I started doing this,the first time it worked like a charm, now when i try to put the xbox back together it makes a bad grinding noise and the cd pops up and down, i figured it was because the top wasnt on, so i put that on and it just tried to read then stopped spinning. NOW the laser lights up x2 and makes a wierd noisex2 and the cd doesnt even begin to spin. What to do now?

get a new spindle, they don't come apart unless you us a bunch of force and end up fubaring the spindle all together....try to find a replacement on ebay. good luck!
2 things - my disc drive is a HL but it looks different than yours - the secod thing is after you take that piece off to clean it how do you put those white "strips" back in?
did everything, now it makes some weird sound and still says open tray.. though the laser and all seems to be working. but i did notice that two black springs fell out when i took the two silver and one black screw out. may this be the cause?
if your looking at motor bracket note the 3 screws 2 silver and 1 (middle) black oxide screws,
adjust 2 silver only to where they are snug then unscrew them 1 full turn, this will orientate the motor on a level plain with the laser to ensure when the laser is reading disc, the same distance is achieved in the center, middle and outer of disc read
dude my disc will spin for about 10 seconds then it just says open tray on the dashboard like there is no game in it i also have done all the cleaning a lube stuff...
mine does not even spin the discs the laser does not even try to read discs either. I fixed it once by cleaning it thorougly and it worked for about 2 weeks
Thank you so much dude My 360 would not spin disks but with no error messages . So i just did this and it fixed it right up. The only thing i can see u need to different is you need to put some new lub of some kind befor reinstalling. But thanks alot dude.
i repair e74 all the time its just do to too much play time eventually it quits working all together but you ghotta find the solder pins and resolder around the HANA chip or the GPU but generally the HANA chip is the problem

Im going to say thank you in advance hoping that this works saving me all my x-mas money. Mine started doing this yesterday morning and I only got to play Guitar Hero World Tour once :(. @TommieDB The laser is either shitty or broken. Tried cleaning the laser with some alcohol?
If it doesn't work you need to replace the laser since it can't read the disk.

For the people that have open tray error here, do you guys also sometimes have "play dvd" when you put in a game?
The 360 recognizes my MW2 copy as a fucking dvd!

Finaly i found a good video lol. my dad did this to mine and it worked and it broke again..he wasnt home i couldent figure out how to get the spinning thing off..lol. i will do that clean it out and add some lubricant to it and it will work =D

Well, so i have put some greece back on, and it works.. But only DVD movies, not any games.. Please dont try this, it is pointles.. Rather try to put more greece inside, it will really help a bit..

Well, i took all greece from motor and you know what happend? It is stucked and will not turn, even if i help it.. Well this doesnt work and i guess, you should not try this one..

This worked for me.. as well as it did for you. My disc wouldnt spin, I did this.. and it now spins great. I can load CDs where I couldnt load anything before.. but how about that next video? What do I need to do now to get it to play 360 games again?! Lemme know bro, thanks!

@Sheosyrath spindle screws are the key. you need to adjust them a quarter turn each until it boots games. good luck!

Oh thank you so much dude!! Everyone - this works.. clean the motor, do the spindle screws correctly.. you can also use a 1.5 allen wrench btw. (metric) - I also did 1 and a quarter turn instead of a half on each.. and it works great. thanks again man!

So it looks like you're doing something extra/different from many of the other vids ive seen. Is that because of this particular drive type? So far ive seen videos that simply have you tigten two screws, and a few that have you slide the laser back to its starting position?

specifically what part are you cleaning? I am looking at the copper wiring. I really need to fix this before Modern Warfare 2, I thought I could just replace the disc drive, but i just learned about flashing drives, and that makes no sense to me.

Some clip fell out of the bottom of the drive. I don't know what to do with it. It has 6 prong like things and a hook end. If you know what this is can you please help me out.

hey man i got this hitachi v 79. i am suppose to mod. but i can open the drive and when i do it manually it still doesnt seem to read the 79unlock. is this the same problem?

I had 3red rings of death a month ago, and spent hours on finding a quick how-to that works. I wasn't intended to give out 100 bucks and wait days for repair. I eventually found a great guide on 3REDLIGHTS (.) INFO and managed to repair my xbox in an hour. Hope it helps.

OK, you know the three screws that hold the motor(spindle) in place? Those black springs go where the silver screws screw in. So, put one black spring in the left and one on the right then screw the sliver screws in.

i fixed mine but a day later ther motor wont even start to spin and now somespring came off from somewhere so im just gonna have to replace the whole didsc drive and switch out the card thing in mineand put it in a new one.

just unscrew the metal silver part of it turn it over and pull on the black spindle peice you cant just pull it off without unscrewing it though there is a grey lip that locks it on from falling off so you gotta unscrew it then flip it over and pull it should come right off

OMG THANKS! BTW if ur 360 is making a grinding noise ur screws are too tight. easy fix is tight the screws he unsrewed on this video and if it spins and makes a grinding noise just loosin them a bit

same with me. but the lens kind of works. it just gets jammed at a certain point and it wont start to spin if the lens doesnt move full. we probably have the same problem

yea i just ordered two new laser cables off ebay, t(hat cable that pluges in back of the laser). cause i read if your laser doesnt work then its cause that cable might not be good cause its the cable that powers your laser ill let you know if it works for me cause you said you might have the same problem ohh and i got my cables for only 7 bucks

I started doing this,the first time it worked like a charm, now when i try to put the xbox back together it makes a bad grinding noise and the cd pops up and down, i figured it was because the top wasnt on, so i put that on and it just tried to read then stopped spinning. NOW the laser lights up x2 and makes a wierd noisex2 and the cd doesnt even begin to spin. What to do now?

get a new spindle, they don't come apart unless you us a bunch of force and end up fubaring the spindle all together....try to find a replacement on ebay. good luck!

did everything, now it makes some weird sound and still says open tray.. though the laser and all seems to be working. but i did notice that two black springs fell out when i took the two silver and one black screw out. may this be the cause?

yeah that make a big diff...those springs keep the motor at the right angle for the disc to spin...without those it wont work right

silver screws are spring loaded
if your looking at motor bracket note the 3 screws 2 silver and 1 (middle) black oxide screws,
adjust 2 silver only to where they are snug then unscrew them 1 full turn, this will orientate the motor on a level plain with the laser to ensure when the laser is reading disc, the same distance is achieved in the center, middle and outer of disc read

mine does not even spin the discs the laser does not even try to read discs either. I fixed it once by cleaning it thorougly and it worked for about 2 weeks

Thank you so much dude My 360 would not spin disks but with no error messages . So i just did this and it fixed it right up. The only thing i can see u need to different is you need to put some new lub of some kind befor reinstalling. But thanks alot dude.

i repair e74 all the time its just do to too much play time eventually it quits working all together but you ghotta find the solder pins and resolder around the HANA chip or the GPU but generally the HANA chip is the problem

Im going to say thank you in advance hoping that this works saving me all my x-mas money. Mine started doing this yesterday morning and I only got to play Guitar Hero World Tour once :(. If this works after I get the screw I stripped out (XD) because I couldn't find the right screwdriver it will have saved me so much time and money, I'll actually be able to buy CoD:WaW and some other things.
