What i think is each level is split onto a single part, so you host to play a level with some1 and once completed you are given a choice to continue to the next level solo or co-op. Thats my theory =P.

I don't know why but you just reminded me of the mercenaries. Do you know if that mode will be in this game? It seems like a good idea, having two people play different levels for high scores.
