i think it's easier to trace the image and then select a tool that makes a contour around your image. coz it's kinda long and boring job to go around the shape. I dunno, maybe you like it that way, but there are less difficult options requiring less time to do this. :)

nice tutorial. however, for people who are just starting out using PS, you left out a lot of key steps like how to pan the image while you are using the pen tool, how to create new image, where to get the custom shape, etc.

well if you want to get technical the definition of vector is using shapes to make a picture so both are acceptable

Actually, no. A vector space or 'vector shape' is a mathematical structure formed by a collection of vectors, you use these mathematically defined shapes to make pictures, meaning they are infinitely scaleable without pixelation because the image isn't a series of static pixels, but dynamic mathematical formulas. This is a great tutorial. But it's not vector. That's all I'm saying.

How do you make that Sunshine thing in the background? What is it called? Is there any toturials on it?

He made that using PolygonLasso Tool (selection tool). First create layer and in that layer just make rays like that using polygon lasso tool, or you can use pen tool aslo. After you complete the selection, just fill ur desired color. But make sure, your Layer of those rays should be between Man and Background Layer. Else it will be either invisible or it will overlap your Man.

Total n00b here but how do you create a selection from the pen tool, ive used GIMP for years and am generally good with graphics, but recently moved to PS and am struggling on finding the apropriate tools needed! if you could tell em this it would be mega helpfull!

when u select the pentool from the tools make sure u select the option "paths" from the top an go around the area u want to select, then right click > define custom shape.. hope that helped =)

When I selected the "Define Custom Shape" option for my path, it never saved to my brushes. How did you do it?

it doesn't get saved as a brush .. it gets saved as a shape!

one tip for the uploader:

1. you can hold SPACEBAR then drag the image for you to scroll around the image freely (coz i noticed you bother on using the scroll bar on the side to move around your image.

2. you can use "CTRL" plus "+" or "-" to zoom in and out. its a lot easier.

Are u a Mac user? I'm not familiar with the programs u're naming but in GIMP i think u can use a Bezier selection for making paths just like in photoshop..
