I have a theology professor that talks EXACTLY like this. The first day in class, I noticed that his voice sounded off (we're in the midwest) but I couldn't quite place what was weird about it until he suddenly asked us, "now, whassamattawidalladis?" in his lecture. I asked him where he grew up because of his unusual accent. He replied, "Oh, I was born in Ohio, then I moved to Missouri, and then I lived in New England for awhile around the Bawston area." He flip flops between THREE accents! XD
I think it sucks to that Bostonians feel they need to adjust their accents (Matt Damon/Ben Afflack). I'm from Texas and I love my twang. That's what makes us special!
I am from NE in MA and RI, but I have been able to weed out the Boston accent. It is very difficult but with practice easily done. To me, the true Boston accent is very annoying to listen to. In small doses it is ok, but I don't care for it.
@gshunw I live in Texas, too. My mom is from Boston and my nephews do what they can to make her mad because she is from Boston and her accent amplifies when she is pissed. A good uncle shows them the tricks of the trade!
It wasn't that long ago when it was ok to be in the media in Boston and have a Boston accent. It sucks nowadays! I hate when I hear the news and everyone is adjusting their accents. Screw you big networks, you're all a bunch of retahds! The Eastern New England media should be encouraged to sound like they are from there, especially if they really are. The BBC does a much better job of representing fuchrissakes.
Nah.. when he was leaving Kare11, I thought it was common knowledge that he was heading to New England to be closer to his family (which is where he's originally from). I think he said that was one of the reasons he couldn't pass up the opportunity.
It really seems that Bostonian accent sounds the closest to Australian. Being originally from Australia, I actually picked up the Boston accent faster than other American accents when I was in the States. The Americans really thought I was from Boston while I was talking to fellow Bostonians.
the boston accent is one of the most easily recognizable throughout the country and i think its wicked rediculous that our newscasters have to pronounce thea R's
As a Chicagoan, I saw nothing wrong with him saying what he said. It's a Boston newscast; it shouldn't have been a problem. I thought it was pretty cool that he slipped on the accent.
Because Boston accent (or in his case Rhode Island) is so funny! My wife is from greater Boston so I should know. But don't worry, she makes fun of our KY accent too. You know, how we say that George "Woosh"ington is the first President? You can also hear it in Loretta Lynn's Coal Miner's Daughter, where she, a fellow Kentuckian, says her "mama scrubbed our clothes on a 'whosh'board everyday."
I love it, this is so great. I love hearing a newscaster with a real accent, and how it slipped out when he wasn't being aware of it, or being careful. This is so funny. And I talk just like him. I love his accent, and mine. Did he really say "Polah Jet"? If he didn't, he should have.
Did I hear the weatherman say he was from Rhode Island? Then he said he was a Yankee fan???? I thought Rhode Islanders loved the Sox and Patriots!! The reason why I ask is I once knew someone from Cranston R.I. and he was totally New England and Boston fan. Can someone explain this phenomenon?
He's a New England "Yankee", being that Yankee Doodle (Well, the focus of it, anyway.) was from Boston, and most other acts that came along with it, also. Some "Yankees" moved to NY, after the MLB was formed, some guys held a meeting to choose the name of their baseball team. For some reason, they chose "The Yankees". Don't get them confused.
"He said he was from rhode island and he said he was a yankee and anyone thats from anywhere north of the mason-dixon line is call a yankee."
That's wrong. Any New Englander of ENGLISH descent who descends from the founding families of this area is "Yankee".. no one else. You have to be a W.A.S.P. too.
@xrayjaime I could not explain that if I have to tell you. In college my roommate was from The Great Barringtons,Mass. Which is on the border of Upstate ,NY and western massachussetts. The guy was a New York Yankee fan and a Boston Celtics fan.
Saying "Dumbass, Australians don't know shit about Americans" is the dumbest thing especially when he said "dumbass, all americans don't know how to speak english." which is actually true.

hahaha... you are mentally deficient and you can't annunciate correctly. new england is not the oldest part of this country. i am from santa fe, new mexico. the oldest capitol city in the nation, home to the oldest governmental building, the oldest church, and the oldest neighborhood in the nation.
that doesn't matter because more than likely, you originally came from overseas somewhere. the new england area was the first real settlement and most of the current united states citizens who haven't immigrated here within the last couple decades originally derived from those original colonies in the new england area. we havent changed the way we talk. when people started settling out west, different accents came out of it which is why theres so many different accents in the US today.
i mean, its no secret that we originally settled in the new england area and moved west from there. there were no english speaking people in new mexico before we settled in new england. even with your precious old government buildings, new mexico was eventually settled by people who came from the east coast. the english language derived from britain. the only difference is, some parts of this country kept that accent throughout the years while other parts lost that accent.
no no friend. spanish was spoken a century before english was. and all of the first "real" settlements were built by spaniards. you are right on one account, my family is from spain... but that was 19 generations ago. my whole point was that this country is not just new england. and new england isn't the oldest part of this country. and yes, ppl from the east did come here, but we retained all of our cultural heritage and the official language is still spanish with dual english that came later.
i was never really trying to say that this country is all new england. im not sure if its how i worded it or what but it wasnt my intention to make that point. i was simply pointing out how a large portion of the US sits there and rags on us for the way we talk when in reality at one point, their ancestors talked the same way we did. its just that the northeast has kept that accent throughout the centuries.
valid point, and i didn't mean to offend you. we are all americans and we have a variety of accents. just like all other large countries. china has a thousand dialects of their language for God's sake. i think we do pretty well here in our country. i find the new england accent interesting. a mix of dutch, german, english and irish.
not quite. u got the english language dating V ad century and spanish (castellano) with VIII ad.
and yes, new england was the first settlement in the united states. new mexico was spanish, then independent, then invaded by settlers from new england when new england was already usa... if u get me
i do, but new mexico is now part of the united states. therefore, our history is counted with the nation's history. so, santa fe is the oldest capitol in the nation. jamestown virginia 1607. santa fe new mexico 1509. my state will be celebrating it's 500th anniversary next year. and it's interesting about the castellano, there are many rural parts of the state where 17th and 18th century spanish is still used. particularly in northern, nm.
Snow is uncertain. The tropics are uncertain. Weather is crazy sometimes. We had 3 tracks for a recent storm and it turns out we got a lot of snow when we were expecting a slush/icy mix then rain.
Ken Barlow is a fuckin ass hole liar of a weatherman! He said that we would only get 1-3 inches of snow and already we have more than that! WBZ needs to fire him and that selfish cunt Mish Michaels! Both have to go!
1st of all he is not a "fucking ass hole liar of a weatherman" apperently unlike you. Since you're sooo good at estimating the weather you should know that about 1-3 includes 3.5 which is not WAYYYY more plus im pretty damn sure he didn't say we were getting around 1-3 i think he said more. you should also keep in mind next time you feel the need to talk shit about a weatherman that they do not have control over the weather so shut the fuck up you fucking faggot bitch.
Even using "American Broadcast English", a person's timber may still reveal thier upbringing. As long as the accentual differences are presented in a soft, consistent manner, it is still appropriate.
Parts of it are New England, parts of it are specific to the greater Boston area. Mostly the grammar, as opposed to the accent. And the accent that is supposed to be used on air is a sort of plain "accentless" accent, if that makes sense. Sadly that's the case.
It used to be that the majority of the broadcasters were allowed to talk in their local accents in the Boston area. Now sadly, probably another thing to thank corporate America for, it is seen as too ethnic. If a New Englander is speaking on a New England broadcast show they will be understood, plus the nuance of Boston grammar is more comfortable to listen to for Bostonians. The rest is all boring, bla bla bla...
No, the Pahk the cah is rather condensed to the greater Boston area (eastern Mass, southern New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and a bit of Conneticut, I believe.) Trust me, I moved from Boston to Vermont, and no one here speaks with that accent I love so much ^_^
I wish they'd let people with Ken Barlow's manner of speaking alone.
It IS "apaht" here in New England (just as it would be in England) The "r" in that word is barely pronounced and flattened. We in New England come by our accent by heritage and it should not be trained out of our weathermen and newscasters.
I'm very aware of regional speech and have studied it for several years, I've done my homework. I'm not the only one who disagrees with the common belief of the northeastern accent coming directly from England and England only.
I know what the Irish brought to Southie in the 1850s. I'm talking about the Beacon Hill accent. Watch the Katharine Hepburn interview here on YouTube. THAT is the New England accent of which I speak.
I understand where you're coming from, and certain pronunciations have been inherited from the English accent, but the two are just way too different to make that type of statement. It might confuse people, that's all.
yeah KARE 11, yeah he is a New Englander, but he was by far the best Meteorologist i've ever watched, and are weather isn't boring lol, especially in the summer. :)
Anyone with W.A.S.P. heritage who is aware of their colonial ancestry/past in New England will proudly refer to him or herself as Yankee irrespective of age.

Parts of it are New England, parts of it are specific to the greater Boston area. Mostly the grammar, as opposed to the accent. And the accent that is supposed to be used on air is a sort of plain "accentless" accent, if that makes sense. Sadly that's the case.
RazelG 4 years ago
It used to be that the majority of the broadcasters were allowed to talk in their local accents in the Boston area. Now sadly, probably another thing to thank corporate America for, it is seen as too ethnic. If a New Englander is speaking on a New England broadcast show they will be understood, plus the nuance of Boston grammar is more comfortable to listen to for Bostonians. The rest is all boring, bla bla bla...

Nothing wrong with the accent. No reason he has to hide it.

I know, why did he appologize? Actualy, I think that news people are taught how to talk :D
DJJetplane 4 years ago 3
yea theyre taught to talk that way. look up "Reporter turns ghetto in 3 seconds". its hilarious and proves it.

Is this such a fight that I have to disable comments? Fun to watch the blows though.

I'm not fighting, just stating ;D

Yeah, my best friend is from Boston and he says "Pahk the cah." It's so adorable!
Did you notice the weatherman said "Polah jet" too? LOL

Cadellacorte 4 years ago
I disagree with your statement that a New England accent is derived directly from the English.
ChoctawCreek 4 years ago
disagree all you like ChoctawCreek. It's a direct hold-over from East Anglian English.
Do your homework.
Cadellacorte 4 years ago
I'm very aware of regional speech and have studied it for several years, I've done my homework. I'm not the only one who disagrees with the common belief of the northeastern accent coming directly from England and England only.
ChoctawCreek 4 years ago
I know what the Irish brought to Southie in the 1850s. I'm talking about the Beacon Hill accent. Watch the Katharine Hepburn interview here on YouTube. THAT is the New England accent of which I speak.
Cadellacorte 4 years ago
I understand where you're coming from, and certain pronunciations have been inherited from the English accent, but the two are just way too different to make that type of statement. It might confuse people, that's all.
ChoctawCreek 4 years ago
I speak in the way I described as do many of my peers. For someone to assume we all speak like the rendition in the video "might confuse people" too.
It's a misconception. It'll always be "Clam Chowdah". Nothing else.

Only older people in new england would call themselves a yankee...i think
zephyrtube 4 years ago
To zephyrtube:
Anyone with W.A.S.P. heritage who is aware of their colonial ancestry/past in New England will proudly refer to him or herself as Yankee irrespective of age.
