@hazzah4me but she got famous for doing mary poppins instead!!! which in fact won a lot more awards than my fair lady!!! hahaha what a slap in the face... i think julie said something about it when she won the golden globe for mary poppins...
@pudgeuncle oh... you are right! I just went and checked it... it did apparently earn more academy award nominations than My Fair Lady. Mary Poppins got 13 nominations (5 won) and My Fair Lady got 12 nominations (8 won)... The point was that Julie Andrews received praise and fame for being Mary Poppins, and ended up winning both Best Actress awards over superb actress Audrey Hepburn! (who btw is amazing as well) I mean when you're a star, you're a star! Thanks so much for the correction!
Why would they not choose an already singer/actress instead of an actress only and do a dub over??? Plus, I think Julie Andrew's personifies Eliza Doolittle better, and she definitely would have performed the part of the transformation very well. Just shows what a mistake Hollywood made in not giving her the part. Although I like the movie alright with Audrey Hepburn I would have liked it much more with Julie in it. I couldn't agree more- she is the REAL "My Fair Lady"!
May I ask if there's a film copy of Julie's Broadway My Fair Lady? I know about the sound recording, but I really want to see her plays Eliza Dolittle!
lets get some things straight here peeps. Julie Andrews and Audrey Hepburn are fantastic actresses!!! They both did fantastic work and are adored by a lot of people. that is all there is to it!!!!!!!
@austrianmonkey@Starlightkiller Yeah, Marnie Nixon dubbed all the singing for Audrey; she was kind of upset that her voice wasn't used but she was no singer and later apologized for reacting badly when she was told about that decision
Marnie Nixon was actually nervous to meet Julie Andrews later because even she believed Julie should have done the voice over for My Fair Lady, the film, since she was THE Eliza Doolittle on the stage version.

I prefer the record where you see Shaw as God and Higgins as his puppet, and Eliza as Higgins' puppet. (Is that Broadway?)
I think she's more musical on my LP than in this clip. I find her a bit "pop" here. She doesn't do all those "screaming, speaking" as here. But some people like the sing-speak.
I think the London version is much more refined, they are both excellent and I listen to them both equally, but I think the later recording is superior with respect to the entire cast, not just Julie. But to each their own, right?
@westsidestory97 are you saying you have a copy of julie andrews playing in my fair lady on broadway?? i want it so bd!! i caint find the whole thing ANYWHERE!!!!
I do like Audrey, but everytime I hear a song in MFL movie I wish it could've been Julie. Marni Nixon err...notsomuch. Julie Andrews? Oh gosh, that would've been the most amazing thing ever. Ever. Ever. Ever.
CORRECTION TO PREVIOUS COMMENT: "I love the common voice" should be interpreted as "I love the common accent" instead. Sorry for any confusion created, especially thought who thought me to be anti-Andrews which is NOT the case. :)

I do love the genius behind allowing Henry and Eliza a song each, where they fantasize about awful things happening to the other person. So twisted.

Julie's voice has more power than that of Marni Nixon. Julie should have at least dubbed Audrey Hepburn.

I love Audrey Hepburn, but Julie is my idol.

@austrianmonkey Well, she did sing most of this song in the film version. Marni just dubbed the middle, fantasy sequence.

Well...they didn't really get along off stage. That's true. But on stage they had GREAT chemistry.
melissaratliff 3 years ago 2
She and Rex Harrison had such a great chemistry. You can even see it in the photographs. What I wouldn't give to be able to watch that.
melissaratliff 3 years ago 2
I agree one hundred percent on that, I'd give anything to see those two performing MFL.
austrianmonkey 3 years ago
They actually did not get along. Rex Harrison was rude to her. It's in her book. :)

So true - pure cheesy and clichés sums of HSM.
I love the common voice of the lovely julie andrews - so refreshing :)

Common voice? That's the last thing I'd call Julie's voice. It's quite uncommon to find a voice of that quality in musical theater.
