  • It probably failed just because PlayStation 2 had the DVD feature. :P

  • Tehy won 96$ on launch

I'm not sorry for them, I'm just sorry they didn't develop a bit more. Some stuff they put into the dreamcast like that little mini-gameboy or whatever could have gona far (imagine farming stuff to win gold to a game you can later play on dreamcrast... how awesome would that have been?)

  • you forgot to add no dvd support. when it comes to console sale, japan is the main focus despite the fact there are western launch as well. when you lose japan, its pretty much over.

  • well done, the first time i've seen a report explain exactly what happened. Still a great system, Soul Calibur blew me away back then 9. 9 .99

  • EA sucks major balls

i dont care what anyone gotta say dreamcast was beast

sony playstation wasnt even that good of a consle

  • It's like SEGA intended to make the Dreamcast fail by failing to build any copy protection into the system and game discs as far as EA goes EA just Sucks, their games all suck Maden games Sucked and had outdated graphics not up to par of what ever systems they were on and the cost was way to high. Sega's Football games on Dreamcast and other systems were way better then EA sports.

Tigerwoods Golf sucked, the grass on the courses looked like Astroturf or miniature golf simulated grass carpet.

  • @dallase1

Sonic was a Awesome game WAY BETTER then Mario 64 at taking the 2-d version of a game and making it 3-D Mario 64 was just doom with Mario and no killing every thing in sight it offered no breakthrough graphical innovations.

It was totally awesome how all the cut scenes were all rendered in real time and not just FMVs.

Nintemdo claimed that the N-64 was a portable Silicon Graphics Workstation but the Dreamcast actually delivered on that claim and made it a reality.

  • It failed because Sonic Adventure was a broken, glitchy, boring, mediocre, poorly designed, and borderline unplayable title clearly rushed to market in a blind panic to avoid another Saturn. Even Sonic Adventure 2 fixing most of the problems was too little, too late. It was still no Mario 64. Everything else was fine--Skies of Arcadia, Ikaruga, Mars Matrix, Armada, Marvel vs. Capcom 1&2, Powerstone 1&2, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1&2, Rez, Space Channel 5, Virtual On 2, Rayman 2--except Sonic.

  • The Sega Dreamcast failed because Sega wasn't willing to work with it if it was inferior to the Playstation 2. Also with the bridges Sega burnt with the Sega Saturn, it lost so much support. If sega allowed the Dreamcast to be the low cost alternative to the other systems while it restructured itself, Sega would have been okay!

  • It was Sega of Americas fault that it failed. look how well Sega of japan did verse Sega of USA.

One thing I don't get is that it so hard to play burned/copy games for the Saturn but for the Dreamcast it was so easy.

It was never the Saturn's fault it was Sega OF AMERICA!!

    Rest in peace Saturn 1994 - 2000.

  • @mexicool187 Its Bernie Stolars Fault

  • EA sucks , seriously , it sucks

  • Its shame the DC had a short life,I remember trying to buy a DC when it was just out,I was unable to,only choice I had was to order an import but decided not to as it was so overpriced by greedy sellers (not the actual MSRP) How things change,I traded in 30+ complete boxed library of SNES games & a boxed SNES & all sorts of extras, all I got for all of it was a PS1+ NO games, looking back what a rip off, If I only knew that a PS1 would be worth shit in 2011 but boxed Ninty games would fly in value

  • Nailed the key issues

  • @cookies7772

Got mine in xmas 98 my uncle worked at sega japan.

    It's 2011 but i still play it.

They call it the undead console for some reason.

  • @wewantdreamcast2 They still make games for the Dreamcast :D

  • @davidus444

    I know.

  • @cookies7772

Saturn came put in 94 japan and dreamcast in 98 in japan i think.

  • I would have thought easy piracy would have made it MORE popular. Otherwise the Commodore 64 and modern day PC would have also been failures.

  • Another (major) reason the Dreamcast failed: the controller. You couldn't get a good grip with the analog stick or the D-pad, and the cord came out the wrong way - it came out in front rather than out the back like all other controllers. VMU was crap too.

    Sega Dreamcast: FAILURE!

  • I say open the Dreamcast to be the console of the people so we can design freeware games to it. if you want a dreamcast just visit your local pawn shop : ]

  • Why not just make one long video?

  • why dont consoles have those awesome d-Pad game controllers on the memory cards!?

  • There is room for sega

  • The war VS nintendo xbox and Sony isnt a war really they almost have the same games and non of them will go bankrupt the each sold millions trillions already

  • @MrAbt9283 actually, wii has more of its own games then they do, but i get what your saying

  • So why is it that Sega Fanboys are 100% convinced that Sega are going to create a new console?

Am I the only person who thinks that 1) It's not going to happen, and 2) It would be a terrible idea if they did?

I mean, what would they gain from it? They'd be going up against Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, the companies that have kept them going all of these years, they'd be throwing themselves into an already heated console war, and the only people who'd buy it would be obsessed Sega Fanboys!

  • @Bowmaj21 also it would be stupid since they have so many games on other systems

  • I can not believe it!

why did some of people would rather buy a ps2 than the dreamcast in the 2001.

I thought video game consoles are not about video/dvd players

  • It was junk would blow out the ports, sounded like it was in pain when you played, most of the games sucked,

  • I may get a Dreamcast soon!

    Yay!!!

  • I got one for christmas XD

  • @AnimeC0NAN Lucky.

  • The Saturn was great in Japan because it got great games...in America we got burnt out titles. Sega just stopped putting effort into the American market. In Japan they were consistent but they failed overseas and Nintendo and Sony won out.

Sega had its moments but they fucked up their game plan and they stopped releasing SHENMUEEEE FUCK YOU SEGA UNFORGIVABLEEEEEEEEE!!!!

  • honestly dreamcast had da best games

  • ...wen i was a kid i wanted one so bad....i never owned a DC, bu i loved dem so much...plus dey looked pretty sweet....^it sux wat happened to em....RIP Dream Cast...

  • the same reason he said it fails because you can burn games... funny that is the exact reason its still at my friends and we play it all the time.

  • The third-party relations and lack of DVD palyback were a shame. This console was powerful, sleek, well-built and reliable (it puts Sony and Microsoft to shame here) and had many wonderful games.

  • The Dreamcast was a doomed failure.... doomed from the start.

  • Bring back the Dreamcast!!! I've never had one, but sounds way better than the crappy Playstation and Xbox!!

  • It's sad Sega finaly got a console that was sound and finaly worth buying and then it collapsed, another thing that failed it was advertising,i didn't relise it was out untill half year had passed it was that poor. And sony and nintendo were huge and at there prime the hype was on them still that there advertising efforts went un noticed

  • jet set radio keeps me coming back for more dream to the cast and xbox og cuss 360 can't play jet set radio future fast

  • and now EA is dead hahahahahah

  • You forgot to mention one of the most important reasons why Dreamcast failed.

Back then in 2000 DVD players were still about 200 hundreth dollars, then came the PS2 in Japan first, it help Sony kick Nintendo ass and Sega ass. It was one of the main reasons, if not the reason why Dreamcast failed. Because it couldn't play DVD and alot of kids and adults at the time wanted a video game system that did both and PS2 did that and had better Graf.

  • to me sega threw the towel in to soon with the dreamcast. i mean they could fixed the issues of the games being burnt. the 2nd issue they could prove companies wrong. but they decided to call it quits.

  • EA Suxx

  • @Ipfree549

No E.A is awsome i think they quit dreamcast for some piracy reason

  • @TheManofthefuture101 cos E.A was sick of making games which where never released since sega always changed consoles

  • @Ipfree549 Wrong. Mirror's Edge. Enough said.

  • NAOMI rules!!

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY DREAMCAST

  • they made almost all of their own games. thats hundreds of millions they spent on some titles that barely sold copies.

  • I'm still having a tough time deciding which old school console to get...

    N64 or Dreamcast...

Since I've never actually had a Dreamcast, I'm leaning towards it.

But I have friends who have more fond memories of N64, like Mario Kart and StarFox... so they would be more likely to jump into that as well...

Maybe I'll just get an old Xbox and mod the crap out of it... then it would play both Dreamcast and N64 games :D

  • How come Sega got stiffed because of the Dreamcast/Segasaturn,

but everyone sorta forgot about the VirtualNintendo and the headaches that ensued.

man... why did sega have to give up?

  • when nintendo pissed off sony they have awaken a sleeping giant

  • sega should go back to the consol race they would be better than nintendo to

  • It failed because of the PS2. The PS2 sparked the DVD market in Japan , and at launch was the cheapest DVD player in all Japan!

Also , remember Sega mocking the PS1 at launch (they have no history?). I wonder if they would have done the same to Xbox back in 2001 if they still were in the console race.

  • Development of Shen mue cost them much

Sony took the attetion with the ps2

    and other reasons

  • Thank you for your tribute to this wonderful console.

  • I remember borrowing a Dreamcast from someone who either a) didn't want to play it or b) didn't understand what they had. It had Metropolis Street Racer and Jet Set Radio amongst others. I was totally stunned at how good it was, having only played Nintendo systems until then (or the Megadrive/Genesis which didn't float my boat). It had a different style and feel completely. I wish I had it back. I'd play one right now if I could!

  • Sega Dreamcast lasted from 1999 to 2002

  • WTF i got 2 dreamcast 1 from when i got it new back in 2001 and one i got at the thrift store for 5 bucks dreamcast is built tuff and has some great graphics

  • oh this explains why my DC broke XD

  • Man, no one was really burning disks back in the day. The system failed because no one supported the system. Nintendo would be in the same boat if it werent for the Gamboy handhelds. Sega didnt need EA , the 2k series was much better anyway and still is. That's why they bought exclusivity. Sony brought cheaper gaming and more games. It goes to show that people are sheep and will follow the tube. I wouldnt buy a PS3 but, they could give me one. The Saturn was crap and Sega was wrong for that.

  • Comment removed

  • He forgot to mention all the shitty Genesis add ons. That stigmatized me for a time. I actually like the Saturn. That Aliens game was fun. Sega should have just stuck with the main genesis all through the 90's. Sonic the Hedgehog 6 anyone?

  • regardless of the flaws it was still amazing and my favourite console ever, xbox 360 is pretty damn close though

  • the saturn wasnt a bad system it was actually good. it had online multiplayer just like the dreamcast and good games. the reason it failed was because of bernie stolar who didnt allow ANY RPGs on the saturn and even cancelled the next sonic game that was to come out. that ass tards the reason why both the saturn and dreamcast failed.

  • @YoungFlame1377 Will the dreamcast was doom to fail anyways. Most of my inner circle was waitting on ps2. Cause we all like the ps1 and whated a dvd player as well.

  • @misledlestat Yeah sega had pretty much shot themselves in the foot years prior. It's glory days ended around 1994. It started with the mortal kombat controversy (dumb and paranoid parents) and became a slow slide into expulsion with one failure after another. I only know one person who followed sega through the rest of the 90's.

  • @Luigi84289 If you think about it, Sega spent less than two years as the leader of the gaming industry. They made a lot of mistakes but the Dreamcast was a fantastic system and I speak as someone who preordered it. The sad part is that a lot of gamers I knew back then wouldn't support the system but now everyone I know loves it. If only they were playing ten years ago...

  • @misledlestat The old days were great, I still play my Genesis all the time but sega had their chance alot of them and they just blew it. What they did was the smartest move at the time. They got to kick back and collect from microsoft and still make games. I wish the sonic games were better. The quality keeps sinking to new depths every game. I couldn't even get through unleashed.

  • @Luigi84289 What console did you play unleashed on? I got it on the wii but I've been stuck on playing fall out 3 on my ps3. Anyways I love to see sega come back and kill the xbox! I wonder if I'm the only one though?

  • i have to say that the dream cast was the best of all sony and sega

  • Jet Grind radio,

    And the Tony Hawk series.

  • wow!

no wonder i only saw it for a while

    then it went

  • i got that exact same tv lol

  • When i turn on my dreamcast today i was really impressed that even today graphics are Soooo good

  • I hope the will just make a dreamcast 2 and hurry up!

  • dude i'm finding one and buying it asap, i miss my old one : (

  • didn't the sega company crash?because alot of the sega games are now played on

the playstation 3 and nintendo wii.

  • @michman2010 listen, Sega isn't in the hardware market anymore, so now they are a "third-party" company (means that develops games for multiple consoles), but it's a rumor that says Sega is trying to get back to the market, with the next generation of consoles (ps4, xBox 3) but it's only a rumor

  • no offense but u sound white

    hollaz

  • Nice recap

  • Though the it didn't sell very well, it didn't decrease the fun factor.

  • Always wished I had one of those.

  • the PS1 was good but PS2 what the #$%@ sony say we got a baby reputation whit ps1 but now let go for 2 and more adult games and the DC is so great i think thay got a plan making lot of mony comme back and say the contract is finish let make a console sega back on track or short SBOT

  • @gbugss

they only advertised like crazy in US and Japan. If you lived in Europe there was no advertisement at all!

  • Lack of 3rd party support? OH yea we are doomed cause we can't have those Madden 00, 01, 03 and other sports games that end up in the Kmart 10 dollar bin like Sony and Xbox boo hoo! Seriously what 'True" gamer (this excludes people who play ONLY sports games) gives a fuck about EA?

  • @Maxipad44142 EA was crucial to Sega Dreamcast; even though Sega came out with excellent sports titles for the Dreamcast, losing EA was tantamount to failure which eventually it was (remember EA (and other 3rd parties) abandoned support for Nintendo's GameCube and we all remember that outcome.

  • @Maxipad44142 EA sports titles are some of the best selling games ever, just saying.

  • best console ever!!!.my dreamcast is broken and i want a new one!!!

  • which was better DC OR SATURN

  • DC was MUCH better than Saturn!!!!!!!

  • @ShawnyBoyKrump Oh, so you let Bernie Stolar brainwash you too?

    Sega's greatness;

    Mega Drive/Genesis > Saturn > Master Sytem > Dreamcast.

Hate me if you must guys, but the Dreamcast looks more a PS1 on steroids than a Sega console.

  • @ShawnyBoyKrump Eh. I prefer my saturn.

  • @ShawnyBoyKrump Yeah but coming off the Sega CD, 32X and Saturn people were wary. They knew they could trust PS2 with sequels to their favorite games like Grand Theft Auto 3 one of the top 5 greatest games of all time in my opinion.

  • @ShawnyBoyKrump Oh yeah?! Well I think the PS2 is better then the PSone, how bout that?!

  • @friezler they're equally good

  • @ShawnyBoyKrump what's equally good? The Psone and PS2? If you don't understand the joke, the Dreamcast is the sequal console to the Saturn so it's oviously better!

  • @friezler @R3AL81 Just because its the sequal, doesnt make it better. PS3 looks cooler than PS1 & 2 but I rather play my PS1&2 anyday over my PS3. Its not about time or sequals, Im taking about the games, play and story. I like Dreamcast over saturn but not my PS3 over my PS1or2, because the games are better. So before you both try to clown, understand what im saying.

  • @ShawnyBoyKrump no? really? you're so inteligent!

surely it's better, it's the next generation after the saturn you noob!

  • @ShawnyBoyKrump

I must've missed the part where the Dreamcast had a mascot like the Saturn did (Nights).

    - Had a good D-pad like the Saturn controller did

    - Had an arcade perfect port of Street Fighter Alpha 3

    - Had more buttons on the controller

    - Had a Panzer Dragoon game, or ANY RPG's for that matter

There's some things for you think about xD

  • @strykah92 Yea, saturn had a better controller, and I played SFA3 and RPGs on my PS1 so I can't comment. But I loved the games on Dreamcast better. Just my opinion. Saturn wasnt bad tho.

  • @ShawnyBoyKrump Totally agree, but like he said people judge something depending on how they did before for me the Dreamcast its the best system Sega ever had and my second favorite console of all time just behind the PS2!... To be honest the ps2 started slow, but everything Sony did with that console was the right thing!

  • i only used copys after the dreamcast died out cuz thats when i found out you could burn them

  • For all we know MS might of secretly helped in making piracy on the DC easy. They may of helped create/advise makers of software able to produce images of DC games and burning software.

  • I think the plug was also pulled on the DC because of MS. The DC ran on windows CE, so MS had quite abit of influence on Sega. DC started loosing sales to the ps2 and MS had the idea of entering the console market. So they put together a console from PC based parts, even used the DC control layout/style and I think MS persuaded Sega to drop the DC all together. With a redesigned joypad and some higher capacity discs, broadband adapter the DC could of held its own against the ps2 and gamecube

  • i only have one pirated game you all should be ashamed its all your fault for sega failing :(

  • You're right. We all shot ourselves on our foot and helped dreamcast to failed. The original games are very cheap right now and besides I read that when the DC games are burn you gotta loose quality since DC had bigger CD's than ordinary cds.

  • I want to learn how to burn games on the dreamcast.:(

  • @Nosfreak2000 very easy, use discjuggler for .cdi images, alcohol 120 or clonecd for the other images. as for getting the games, theres a few great websites out there. my favorite is called snesorama . us go there, click the forum link on the left, then look near the bottom of the main forum to see the threads for dreamcast games. the games are mostly hosted on megaupload or rapidshare links. its not hard to find a game hosted on 1 download link, because they have many mirrors for each game!

  • i still got my dreamcast i burn like 100 game plus best of rage games

  • yeah so true i have over 50 burned games for dreamcast

  • @oussama3000 - Ignorance and disrespect will earn you many friends I'm sure...

  • Dreamcast looked better than the PS2, it was equal graphically with the PS2, it had online features which the PS2 DIDN'T have, it was MUCH better built than the PS2 (the reliability of the PS2 was very shaky whereas the Dreamcast was rock solid in comparison)... the Dreamcast had everything. Plus, the DC controllers were better than PS2 and the games were of a higher quality overall.

Such a shame it did die... it deserved so much better.

  • Citrus: EA killed the Dreamcast.

  • such a shame that you dont know wtf u talking about such a shame if the dreamcast had all that stuff it woudlnt failed so stfu

  • well if you knew the ps2 well

the ps2 did have online play. i enjoyed it as much as the dreamcast

  • gota admit tho. DC had some bad ass games from capcom

  • 'segga'

  • its still the best system of its time and it was also the first online system.

  • i still have one and it works

  • i do to, but i lost my memory card :( i will just buy a new one though.

  • @devol264 Saturn also had a 28.8 modem you could buy =]

  • @sanderstrebor yeah but saturn was also a fail system since the original sega still sold better when the saturn came out. of course i do own a saturn and i lovvvvvvve playing house of the dead on it. yeah that damn game cost me 85 dollars since it is rare to find and american copy floating around and i bought it used lol.

  • @devol264 It was NOT the first system to use online gaming. The Saturn and N64 both had online gaming capabilities.

  • @DisasterPiece0302 this was out of the box though....

  • @stezo2k His information was incorrect though, not to mention that the online on the DC was barely used more than the Saturns or N64's. It also didn't revolutionize online gaming, considering THAT was done by the Xbox. The DC just was another failed experiment in online gaming. A BIT more popular than previous attempts, but really not by much =/

  • @DisasterPiece0302 well i googled it argue against you but it appears there is some debate about it the first system being the dream cast, the saturn and the xbox. of course we know it not the xbox but i cant really confirm the n64 or saturn

  • @devol264 I agree, though they were way off about thinking people would still be using dial up 5 years down the line. Haven't used that since the late 90's.

  • @devol264 Actually the saturn was, but if you want to go way back, sega channel was.

  • I sort of remember sitting and playing sega genesis with my friends. So video games machines like Nintendo and Sega does sort have a special place in all game players from the late 80s. So its sort of sad Sega stopped making machines. Id rather see segas than xboxes in store.

  • my friend doesn´t say the same...and in that time (2000) in a videogame magazine here in Argentina, they explains the same thing that i´m saying to you...if you have an original game of 1.2gb used complete, and try to make the same game in a normal cd rom of (700mb) something is wrong... doesn´t it?

Don´t think that here in Argentina we are in stone age, the tecnology comes here...don´t think wrong....Cheers!

  • EA eat SHIT! The dreamcast was the best console ever!

  • I alway thought Sega had the best games..and still do. It's sad because I had the Dreamcast...and imagine if they had updated the Dreamcast and updated NFL2K-that game would blow the fuck outta Madden!

  • Another Message to sega:Your dreamcast proved online play is posible sega you are the star of making consoles RETURN PLEASE!

  • They are. They do have a new console. It's called "Ringedge" set to launch in 2010. Check out my profile for more info.

  • A message to SEGA:SEGA your dreamcast was a great console but you should return to the Game Console War I mean if you return maibe you could get 800000000 people sega future or something you should return ALOT OF PEOPLE WANT IT SO PLEASE RETURN WE WANT YOU WE LOVE YOU!

  • It could be Microsoft, it could be Sony, it could be flipping Nintendo! Why Sega? I do agree, Sega is pretty stupid for making mistakes, but they got it right for once. If the gaming public gave it a chance, then maybe we could have a great system. **** graphics. The games are awesome.

I truly hope Sega comes back, because they really did get it right, just that we didn't give them a chance.

  • Comment removed

  • Lol copies dont break the console - just saying I know this to be bull.

  • True. I used copies all the time!!!

  • The dreamcast games "copies" break the console, because te GD-ROM discs have a 1gb of capacity and the "copies" only have a 700mb, then, the "manufacturers" of these copies, cut presentations, stereo audio and more...when the console search for these data...DANGER! until BUM!

  • No, you're mis informed. The way it works is the system searches for these things and if they don't find them , it moves on to the next thing. Either the game works or it doesn't. It doesn't break the console.

  • you sure? all my games were pirated except for 3 or four. and I had HUNDREDS!! blame my uncle for being cheap.

  • The piracy in dreamcast doesn´t work! FAKE! the copies break the console!

  • no, not really, almost all my games are on CD-Rs that I burned and it still runs like new

  • Uh no they don't. Either your burning them wrong or your dreamcast was broke to being with.

  • not true. my uncle gave my 3 breifcases of pirated dreamcast games

  • I still have this system, and have bought about every good game for it. The thing that makes me sad is that I can't use the modem for online anymore, I am not sure if it was the Dial Up service which I had used, or if the service was completely dropped.

  • How about doing a collection video?

  • Hrm I might do that some weekend. like, a video per game ?

  • Yeah that would be cool, I always like seeing people's collections of games and how they got them if they got a deal on the game also.

  • that sounds really fun to do. Yep I will do that, I will start working on it =D

  • Sweet look forward to it :)

  • this is so unfair... fuck off microsoft let sega come back!!!!

  • This is the reason why I hated EA.

  • Me 2 and also why i didn't buy a PS2, silly i know but i just loved this console.

  • how can you burn the games?

  • Long live the Dream.

  • Did the Dreamcast died because of it's poor games?

  • no, because of ps2, the DVD for ps2 killed dreamcast, and 3rd party developers dont like how dreamcast works beacuse they heard ALOT of ppl downloading and burning dreamcast games which they dont want that to happen, they were planning to make a project called Nico, but they discontinued because

    1. the head man for sega of u.s. was fired.

    2. they were bankrupt because ppl downloaded video games

and 3. many variety of games BUT not very fun at all.

  • wait my bad 3 is wrong!

its becuz third party ppl such as capcom, ea sports etc. becuz it was bankrupt. so mostly the reason why the discontinued is becuz, BANKRUPT

  • Such a good console, gone to waste. I seriously NEVER got to play one. It just came and gone. But I was happy with my PSOne and Ps2. :D

  • Why do people keep on saying that it failed? The last game was released in 2007.

I just got one today, and it was factory sealed. I bought it from a collector.

If you love great games, get the system, it has such a large library of good imports.

The same case goes for the Saturn, it too was a great system.
