Gee, I had no idea how complex SSD requirements are. Thanks heaps for this tutorial. Now I'll be certain I'm getting the right SSD and not blowing $200 on a brick. lol
So yeah like I say though, when they do come down in price a bit, I'd use a 640 or 700 GB one for boot and software, and all the other ones will be storage. I'll go all SSD.
Thanks for the info. I don't think we'll have to weight so long, remember how I said they were showing one of those PCIE card SSD's that is 12TB at CES this year? Well, I think that it won't be so long now. Maybe 5 years or less if there was a 12TB PCIE SSD at CES this year. I hope it is soon though.
We use a program that will read the screen to us. In fact, Windows has a cheap one built in called narrator. It's not the best, but it works to instal the main screen reader you will use. So, yeah, that's how we use them. Good question, and I say it's kind of sad it's not too well shown to the quote on quote sighted world. Even the MAC can talk now with a program called Voicee Over.
How much is a 1 TB one? All though, I think I'll weight until there are 3 TB ones at least. Or maybe I'll weight for that PCIE 12 TB one that was shown at this year's CES. I want to have the most memory, but without having so many of them.
@MrHamit64 There is 3.2TB SSDs, but they aren't normally sold to normal consumers due to the cost. Just type "3.2TB SSD" into google and be prepared for loss of breath due to the insane amount of money... yes $20,000.00. You'll be waiting at least 5-10 years before you can get a 3TB SSD at a reasonable cost.
Nice. How would a blind person tell if something is up with it since it doesn't make a sound? This is something that friend of mine was worried since he and I are blind. He said he would still prefer the regular one because if you don't hear Windows Start Up.wav, and you hear a lot of grinding, then you know something is up.
Is saying that an SSD works like a compact flash card, an SD card, or a thumb drive okay to explain them to someone who isn't too geeky? I'd oonly use use it as a boot drive and to have all the programs on for now. All though, I hear word of at least 1 tarabyte ones comming soon. If that's so, then I would go all SSD when that happens.
@MrHamit64 Yes you could explain it that way it's pretty much the same thing. And you could buy a 1TB SSD right now.........if you were made of money!
"...garbage collection utilities that you can run in the background." I would like to know more about this. I wasn't aware until just now that you lose TRIM when you set up RAID. Could that be why my Win7 installation on a 64GB+64GB SSD RAID 0 setup is about 3/4 full? Cuz I have a Win7 installation on an old-timey drive & it only occupies about 60GB.
The trim part is very important for ssd's.. just to make sure my computer is fully idle I turn off power saving & log off of windows to the login screen & let it sit for 1 to 2 hrs once a week. hasn't slowed down & still a snappy ssd for being 6 months old
@aspirinemaga im no expert but i hear the crucial m4 is a good choice due to stability, and ocz is not as stable, but provides better speeds. personally i would go with the m4, because if you look at it, it is faster than an hdd so it is a win either way.
yes but at what cost SSDs or a big scam as they cost less then a HD to make what a big copyright scam when will ppl see this big scam the cost to make them is 15% of what they cost in a shop to buy some times less
They can give us all the info on SSD's we want stil ldoesnt change the fact that there a luxury and not needed since price per GB is rediculous if i wanted an SSD same size as my HDD id Be looking at like £900 for a SSD for a HDD that costs about 70-80
@BolvarFTW It's something you dont go back from though. With an SSD boot/program drive everything is so much faster and your operating system will hardly ever slow down.
YES! all questions answered, ah newegg, you need to tell those losers over at Tigerdirect to sit down...You guys know whats up! and to top it all off your informative too!? BTW paul made an SSD get nekkid..
if you have a z68 chipset get SRT (smart response technology) if you have a 60GB SSD and a 1 TB HDD =1TB SSD, besides the inital load of the data, so $200 for a 1 TB SSD as opposed to $12000 for a 1TB SSD
Youtube, I just want a reply, not have to reply to some one else's comment, sorry to the last guy on the page, this isn't toward you, but Newegg dude, you need to loose the fag facial hair. Who wants to be a millionaire is over!
actually hard drives record more like an old LP (record) with charge differences being interpreted as 1's and 0's. the drive even has an amplifier in it.
Paul that was great. Very informative. Do you have a personal preference on brands etc? Thinking about going for a corsair one myself when money permits.
I undestand that trim in win 7 64 is running on my computer, but every once in a while, should I just walk away from my computer for a couple of hours for trim to work better and be more effective and/or should I log out of windows and go to the switch user menu and let the computer idel for a few hours for trim to do its thing or should I just continue to do whatever I do with my computer and don't worry about trim and trim will do its thing on its own.
I dont know why everybody says SSD's are more power efficient than traditional hard drives, has anyone ever done tests? In almost all tests, the SSD only lasted on average 3 minutes longer than HDD's. If you look on SSD's, they require at most 1 amp to operate, where a HDD like a WD caviar blue/black only requires .50 amps, there was also a test, doing random reads and writes continuously, SSD died 1 hour earlier than HDD, but that is because SSD processes more making CPU/Chipset run hotter .
My suggestion for small SSDs paired with Windows 7:
I have a 60GB Mushkin Chronos SSD with Windows 7 Pro x64 installed, but during installation, I used Audit Mode to move the ProgramData and Users folder to a fast-for-a-mechanical-drive Samsung Spinpoint F3. For the normal user, you will see no performance impact, and it should free up a ton of space on your SSD. Also regularly use utilities like CCleaner to keep the drive free of clutter.
RAID over TRIM will be available on Intel chipsets with a future version of the Intel RST driver. 11.6 or later i believe. The only way your SSD will fail after 4 years of use is if you absolutely HAMMER it with writes. aka most people won't get near this amount of writes in that amount of time. i heard a good way to TRIM your drive is delete ~500MB of data from your recycle bin, and let your computer idle for 5mins or more.
yes GC is done by drives controller out of the box.
and using a mechanical drive on a SATA III port is useless, but does not affect performance. it is perfectly fine to use such a drive on a SATA III port. its no different from using a PCIe 1.0 video card in a PCIe 2.1 slot.
I tried buying an SSD last year. I put it in my PC and it never worked. I sent it back and got a replacement. Put it in my laptop to see that it worked, then tried it in my PC and it didn't. Seemed like my power supply was frying the SSD. Has anyone else had this experience, and how did you get it to work?
I never waited to make the jump to SSDs. I heard nothing but horror stories about reliability. I was using a Velociraptor and figured it was fast enough. I finally took the jump after Thanksgiving. Picked up a 120gb Intel 320 for $109 and man am I glad I did. I'll never look back. It's so much faster than I could have imagined and it's been reliable so far.
im one of those people who want to get an SSD in the future, but am confused about how to get the OS from my HDD onto my SSD....you say just reinstall it onto the OS, but wont that not work if you already used up your one activation code? or will it let you install it multiple times on the same PC? thanks for your help anyone!
@hoofhearted44 yes an activation code will work multiple times as long it's not used on seperate PCs at the same time. At worst you can just crack the OS
@hoofhearted44 as long as you are using the same mother board, your activation code will work again even if you change your hard drive over and over and re-install the OS over and over. but if you change your motherboard and you have an OEM OS installer then your code won't work anymore.
I subscribed to newegg tv a while back and I quite enjoy watching the videos. For a while now I've had many, many questions about SSDs and this video pretty much answered them all. Great Job as always with the presentation Paul.
I'd just like to say that everyone at newegg tv deserves some sort of YouTube award for giving us these great videos that do in fact make our lives easier.
Now that I have watched the whole video I can say its very useful for people planing to go SSD on their next tower, or next new OS hard drive. A few pit falls, like the Bios, news to me, and lots of good info.
Paul, Actually, I do have an array in my computer, 2 x OCZ Agility 2, 40GB @ Raid0 purchased around AUG 2010 from Newegg. They run on TRIM. I was surprised to see TRIM works with AMD, when I entered the code you showed on the video, I got result = 0.
PS: the way I setup my HDDs are, 2 of 40gb SSD in Raid0, and a Raptor 10k rpm single.
@Lobos222 As I understand it, yes. Not sure by how much, but you by pass the SATA controller and cut out decode time and what not. I'm not sure how right that is, but a buddy of mine who is a bit more knowledgeable about computer architecture told me that much.
Depends on what type of games you play on your PC.
Some games have become lazy it seems. On a 7200rpm HDD loading a battle in Shogun 2 takes AGES. While a SSD wont generally improve your frames I would argue that it would lower texture poping in graphic heavy streaming games like some flight simulators and other games like Arma 2.
But for the general console port, no you wont really see the difference.
Extremely informative and effective video!

You can still change to AHCI in windows without having to reformat.
1) Make sure you're set to IDE in the bios.
2) Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>system>CurrentControlSet>servic es>msahci
3) Double click on "Start" and set it's value to '0' (default should be '3').
4) Restart then go to your BIOS and set the controller to AHCI
5) Windows will ask you to restart once you're logged back in so do so! or else!

@hoofhearted44 so basically your OEM OS installer is tied to whatever motherboard you used on your first use of the installer.

Way cool!

Is something wrong with my monitor at 1:57?Or just a video glitch or something.

Now that I have watched the whole video I can say its very useful for people planing to go SSD on their next tower, or next new OS hard drive. A few pit falls, like the Bios, news to me, and lots of good info.

I also wonder if there is a way to let AMD chipset to enable SSD cache function. That would be awesome.

Wait, is PCI-express SSD faster than SATA3 (6gbits) ports?
Lobos222 2 months ago in playlist Tutorials & Guides
@Lobos222 As I understand it, yes. Not sure by how much, but you by pass the SATA controller and cut out decode time and what not. I'm not sure how right that is, but a buddy of mine who is a bit more knowledgeable about computer architecture told me that much.

To whoever asked about whether or not an SSD would be practical for gaming: Not really... Load times will be faster, but not by much.
BeSweeeet 2 months ago
@BeSweeeet

I had no idea that I had to set my ssd (Intel 320) to AHCI before installing windows. How would I go about correcting this?
typhoonxjai916 2 months ago
@typhoonxjai916 I did the same thing, but from what I've read so far... you'd have to reformat :(. hopefully someone can give us a better solution

Is it worth the money to get an SSD for gaming? Does it make that much of a difference? And if so, what would be a good SSD for $100-$200?
