don't you end up going from square to closed by doing that? And then trying to get back to square? omg who listens to this crap anyway... a waste of 8 years if you ask me!
As I have said in earlier posts, the putter arcs on putts over 5 feet, but on short putts under 5 feet I have found this method to be far better, not only for me but for most of the students I teach. The higher the handicap the more difficult it is to time the putter just right with an open to closed method.
The putter is on a plane. When you keep it on plane it goes back up and in. and the shaft always points to the base of the plane. but if you keep it straight back straight through then you have to take the shaft off plane pointing past the plane line.
Mel, really enjoyed your vid's but regarding your putting video don't we all have a tendency to form a shallow arc naturally when putting, not a straight line, esp for longer putts.
I agree that as the putts get longer there is a definite arc. However, i have found this method to be really good for putts 5 feet and in. The magic distance!
its ok to use this type of stroke if you putt well with this but you will find u'll never be a really good putter becuase you have to manipulate the putter to keep it square to square which means that it takes a hell of a lot of practice to get really good at this I know because I used to putt like this but i sawpped becuase it is inconsistent and the most important things with putting is alignment and posture and have a go with a putting arc training aid and it'll really improve ure putting
I think that this method is great for short putts - 5 feet and in. I do not feel at all that I am "manipulating" the putter face. After doing this drill for the prescribed 6 weeks the stroke felt extremely "natural" I have revolutionized my putting with this drill. If you are an open to closed putter and are a good putter, then stick with it. I do not try and change my students to this method if they already putt well.
I always learn more when the person teaching is wearing loafers.

why only 5 feet and in? if you advocate this method surely you would teach it for longer putts as well?

I would agree

Tiger Woods "releases" the putter blade--he lets the toe pass the heel on the through-swing.

@golfschools
magic distance is more 2-10 feet
after that the stats show that the amount of putts made outside of 10 feet falls pretty low, its where you putt from, not how you putt!

Brilliant for those that use this type of stroke -- which I do.
