speaking as an *original* trekkie - these effects are magnificent and add immensely to this weighty episode. Especially impressed by the shot of the decayed hulk of the Botany Bay tumbling toward infinity as it is discarded.
@talktalk2 Agreed. 'Redoing' the effects is messing with history. The way the FX looked reflected what was possible for that time, and to 'update them' simply to attract 'new viewers' is sad, IMO...a shame they are not able to appreciate the show (with original FX) for what is was/is...groundbreaking storytelling and top notch FX for its day. To alter any of that betrays the work of the people who originally worked hard on the series, and it falsifies history.
Cheap cgi the original special effects are 10 times better then this half baked pie. The special for this epsode are poorly done and look thown together.
Chekov was locked in the toilets in this episode ;-)

To the next generation of fans, like me, the new effects gives the episode a much needed visual improvement!
I love the remastered edition!

The remastered effects look fantastic, but they take away that "feel" from the original "Trek." I prefer the 1960s' technology/special effects.

That's the point. They have to fit with the episode - and they do beautifully. The visual style and the idea is brilliant.

If Star Trek XI gets made and is successful at the box
office, they should do a series focusing on Captain
Pike & a young Spock.
